<![CDATA[Volunteers wanted to help out at UNICO--a non-profit Spanish community center near downtown Canton (exit 19 off Hwy 575.) So far, I am the only native English-speaker working at the Center, and we really need a few more. I teach 3rd level English 2 nights a week---mostly to adults who have gotten up at 5:00am to start their workday and, still, they somehow make it to class to learn English from 8:00p.m. to 10:00p.m. Although I’ve never taught anything before, and I speak only a few words of Spanish, the experience of teaching at the Center is the most fun and rewarding time I have all week. If you have been thinking about volunteering somewhere, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you are interested in working with the Spanish community. You can make your own hours and help out in various ways. Even if you could only make it for a couple hours per week and all you did was (very slowly and clearly) dictate a story from the textbook, so that the students got a chance to hear the American pronunciation—You wouldn’t believe how grateful both the students and the folks who run the Center would be. Or, if you would like to volunteer more time and you feel confident teaching, you can have your own class that meets 3 times per week. Besides teaching or assisting in teaching English, we also need someone who can teach the basic use of the computer or coach people to prepare to get U.S. citizenship. From handyman work, to yard work, to helping folks pay bills or other miscelanious tasks and chores which are needed. I am in need of a ride to and from these folks homes (mostly on weekends) and/or a driver/helper to drive me there (we can go in my vehicle) help some if you wish, or just visit with the folks, and to drive me back home. Most days it takes from 2-4 hrs depending on what is needed. I have made some great friends and connections doing this while serving those in need in our community, it is quite rewarding. <![CDATA[Like Animals? Want to help animals? Volunteer with us for Celebrate Animals 2008! Celebrate Animals is a yearly ‘fun’draiser through the Atlanta Animal Alliance. It is a great time to bring your dogs, cats, friends and family to walk and party for a great cause. All profits benefit the Atlanta Animal Alliance which operates Project CatSnip, a low-cost mobile spay and neuter clinic which aids the greater Atlanta area. Project CatSnip has been in existence for 5 years and has performed over 35,000 surgeries. Also, Well Pet Humane, the best and newest option in low-cost quality veterinary care. Celebrate Animals is September 27th, 2008 from 8 am to 2 pm at the Ashford Green at Perimeter, 4170 Ashford Dunwoody Road, Atlanta, GA 30319. The event features a 1 mile walk, a compilation of animal related businesses (79 in 2007) and a super pet adoption where 147 dogs and cats were adopted from 32 rescue groups last year alone. In addition there will be live music and entertainment as well as food and drinks. The family fun zone provides enjoyable games and educational information. Walk participants will be able to enter their pet and themselves in the Parade of Pets for costume and obedience contests. Everyone will have the chance to win fun prizes and awards, take their picture with their pets and take home free products from participating exhibitors. Food/Water Committee (8-10 ppl) -Refresh 2 and 4 legged walkers with snacks and beverages. -Assist with set-up and clean-up as necessary. 5. Stokkseyri is a coastal South Icelandic town in the fertile farming district region of Flói. It is known for its black sandy beach which becomes quite crowded with tourists during summer. The beach is wide and full of driftwood. A long sea wall was erected in the late 18th century to prevent encroachment by the sea and as a shield against Ölfusá river's flooding and high waves. The entire coastal area is open lowland and very windswept with shallow shores. The village has a rich art and cultural life. Paintings and glass galleries, Ghost Centre and the Center of Ethnomusicology, which are all situated in the Hólmaröst cultural centre. An interesting museum, "Þuríðar cottage" is in Stokkseyri, built in memory of Lady Þuríður Einarsdóttir, captain of a fishing boat in the late 18th and early 19th century, a time when it was considered a unique profession for a woman. The Ghost Centre in Stokkseyri is a Ghost Museum with all of the most famous ghosts in Iceland located in a building by the harbour. Guests walk through the ghost-maze, where they will experience the stories in the environment where they happened. The stories can be listened to in English, German and Icelandic. Here is a nice description of Stokkseyri in the Icelandic newspaper Grapewine: “It is a community where one native has a polar bear in the living room, some have horses in their backyard, and almost everyone knows the Foo Fighters on a first name basis, Stokkseyri is located on the south coast only 45 minutes from Reykjavík. This small village of about 500 people is renowned for its natural beauty, but more impressive are the creative inhabitants living there, inspired by the shore and wildlife in the surrounding area. Stokkseyri wasn’t much of a draw for tourists a decade ago. Natives almost entirely depended on the fishing industry, and the 26-metre-high lighthouse Knarrarósviti was really the only attraction for travellers. Times have changed, the fish processing moved to nearby town Þorlákshöfn and with companies like Kajakferðir, Töfragarðurinn, restaurant Við fjöruborðið and all kinds of museums the village is becoming a popular spot for both locals and foreigners arriving by thousands every year to take part in various activities.” The volunteers will be acting as ghosts in the Ghost museum and also, they will be working closely with the staff of the museum helping them with all other necessary tasks. The Western Ghats is India's prime zone for bio-diversity, known for its number of animal and plant species in this region. A Marine Turtle protection project has been started here in co-operation with the Forest Department of the State of Karnataka. Over a 60-kilometer stretch of beach, surveys have been conducted and protection of the turtle nests has taken place until the hatching of the eggs. In 2005, more than 500 baby turtles reached the ocean safely thanks to the effort of international volunteers. The workcamps will also focus on spreading awareness to the general public and to the schools about the importance of turtles in the bio-diversity. <![CDATA[TITLE: Research study for bone marrow/stem cell transplant survivors We are looking for people who: <li> Are at least 18 years old (and 16 or older at the time of transplant) <li> Had a transplant between 9 months and 2 years ago <li> Are living with their disease or free of disease after a successful transplant <li> Have telephone service <li> Speak English If you answered yes to each of these questions, you may be eligible to join a study that will test a program designed to help people who have problems and concerns reported by some people who have had a hematopoietic stem cell transplant for treatment of cancer and related diseases. To determine whether you are eligible to join the study, you will be asked to complete a 20 minute telephone screening interview that includes questions about your background and your thoughts and feelings about your illness and transplant. If you are found to be eligible and if you decide to join the study, you will complete study procedures from your home, directed by a study staff member. The study includes two telephone interviews, spaced over about 4 months. One will take about 45 minutes and the other will take about 60 minutes. Between the two interviews you will be asked to complete four 30-minute study sessions that involve writing about various topics. You will be compensated for your time and effort. The Convent is situated in the region of Abruzzo, centre of Italy, about 150 km away from Rome. It has been fully restored by the local institution Mountain Community and furnished following as much as possible the "static free" standards. The project aims to bring new economic, tourist and especially cultural and spiritual movements in this quite isolated area. The volunteers have to be fit to ride a bike, around 15 km daily (of course with breaks). The bicycles will be provided, thus there is no need to carry a bike with you. The group will tour around Van Lake, overnight in different locations on the way, join in environmental cleaning activities, collecting garbage, distributing brochures and drawing the attention of the locals. There will be local environmentalists as well in the group. Project language: English Accommodation: In dormitories. Food will be served by the municipalities on the way. Lunch boxes will be provided. Location: Van Lake, Van province Note: The project will start in Istanbul with an orientation meeting.
