My name is Marc Barton and I am a Sergeant in the U.S. Army. I have not
filed for bankruptcy yet and hopefully with your help I can avoid that.
I have also contacted the credit counseling services, I will continue to
try but I am getting the same response from all of them. I can't even
afford their monthly payments to pay it off, and I have been told that I
can't even afford to declare bankruptcy. If you look at my monthly
expenses, I barely scrape by month to month and some months are a little
harder. It seems that whenever I get an extra dollar, something comes
up.
I guess I should start at the beginning. I found out in August of 1997
that my son was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. I wanted the best for
him and found out that enlisting in the Army would provide him with full
medical coverage. Within a week I was off to boot camp at Fort Knox, KY.

Currently I am assigned to the 3RD Brigade, 2ND Infantry Division at
Fort Lewis, Washington. My wife, Sarah, and I have 2 sons and a daughter
on the way in June.
I have been deployed to Iraq twice in support of Operation Iraqi
Freedom. During my first deployment, I came home on leave and found a
beautiful house for my family. I purchased the house and even though it
needed many repairs and updates, I was determined to turn it into our
dream home. Shortly after signing all the paperwork, I returned to Iraq
to complete my tour of duty.
Everything was going fine until my last deployment that ended in
September of 2007. I found out that my mortgage was part of the
sub-prime crisis that has hit the market. My intent was to redeploy in
July, refinance my house for a fixed interest rate, and move on. However
my tour was extended 3 months and I couldn't make it back in time before
the ARM adjusted.
Up to July of 2007, I had kept all my credit card payments current and
was on my way to having a good credit score to refinance with.
In July my APR was 6.5% and in August it was 9.5% and now it has reached
10.85%. My payments went from $850.00 a month to $1390.00 a month. On
top of that I have a second mortgage that I took out to purchase
building materials and other items to bring the house together. I
believe I have done a great job on it. I purchased it at $152,000 and it
now appraises at $300,000.
When my mortgage payments started rising, I couldn't keep up with my
other debt such as credit cards, utilities and so forth. I had to fall
back on my credit cards to keep up with some of the necessities and then
I put all other debts to the side and focused on my mortgage payments
because I didn't want to lose my house. I am now facing losing it though
because I cannot get a lender to even look at me for a refinance.
Because of my delinquency on my credit card debt, my credit score has
plummeted and I can't get it back up to a point where a lender will
assist me.
If I could pay off my credit card debt, and continue with my current
payments on my house for 5-6 months, my broker assures me that my credit
score will go up and I will qualify for a lower interest rate. Or if I
could eliminate my second mortgage, it would free that money up to send
to the creditors. I am willing to seek any avenue it takes. Every month I am barely scraping by and can't
save up any money to make payments on my own.
I have tried for the past 8 months to fix this and I have had a few
organizations donate to me so that I can keep my utilities on, but it's
too little, too late. I don't know what else to do. My wife and kids love
our house and after all the sweat equity I have put into it, I would
hate to have it foreclosed. I just remodeled the upstairs so that my
toddler can move up to his own room and his nursery could be used for
the daughter that is due in 2 months.
If there is anything you can do, can you please help me insure that my
family can stay in our dream home?
if you want to see pictures go to:
http://www.freewebs.com/sgtbarton/

Everyone has a story. Everyone feels the impact, and now you have the opportunity to help.

The Care Communities is a non-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization which provides volunteer services for individuals suffering from AIDS or cancer. We offer these individuals non-medical assistance, including emotional and domestic support at no cost.

How do we do that? Through wonderful volunteers that combine into a team to work with a single individual. We call our volunteers Care Team members and the people they work with Care Partners (those with the serious illness). Our volunteers do nothing medical but instead do everyday practical things that help the Care Partner stay in their home. Not only that but we only ask 4 hours a month of their time to work with their Care Partner. Since they work in a team, those hours add up and the Care Partners get a lot of extra help.

There are hundreds of people that we must turn away because more Care Partners exist than volunteers. However, most people would be surprised to know that only a few hours a month greatly benefit our Care Partners.

Typical Care Team activities include, but are not limited to:
Assisting with light housekeeping
Assisting with yard work
Helping with special projects (i.e. cleaning garage, moving, gardening, etc.)
Preparing and serving meals and eating together (frequently, company during a meal increases a Care Partner's appetite.)
Socializing by playing cards, watching a video together, or going to a movie.
Listening and allowing the Care Partner to laugh and cry without judgment.
But most importantly, The Care Communities Care Teams provide a sense of love and care by being there for someone who might otherwise feel isolated, alone and without community.

Please consider spending just a few hours a month as a Care Team member. It is very important to create awareness that there is only one planet and to promote values such as flexibility, understanding other cultures, tolerance and team work. This project is organized with the aim to promote voluntary service activities among the children and adults through sports and cultural exchanges. A group of international volunteers is invited to help in the organization of sport events and also to participate in social activities to support the local native people of the Yucatan Peninsula.
