<![CDATA[Baltimore Artists really do need to speak out against the sort of shysterism which uses the artist as its bait -- the slick corporate agenda that gives lip service to "Art" but actually serves conditions which prey upon and devour the artist. When I was getting kicked out of my leased studio space last November (by a crooked developer no less), I contacted BOPA for help, only to be referred to Baltimore Economic Development, and then pushed into the clutches of the worst sort of thieving speculator developer scum, at above market rates even. Of course, those were the sort of offers I found necessary to refuse. Here in the land of Agnew, Mandel, and Bromwell, anything which shows noble potential involving the community-at-large, such as Artscape, is targeted to be slowly co-opted and corrupted. Is it really any surprise? As to those who fault the current mayor Dixon, the opportunist O'Malley was no better. He actively sought out developer dirty money, in exchange for special favors at the expense of the health and well-being of the community and its artists, yet hypocritically walked around Artscape seeking votes. Artists really do need to organize around the issue of affordable space, and the political status quo which sees as its duty to keep such space beyond the reach of the artist.]]>

Real artists know that Target and mouthwash companies (who have tents at Artscape) know nada about art. That's what ARTSCAPE has become: ARTS-ESCAPE, a time to promote everything that isn't related to the kinds of longterm artists that help to truly make this city an artistic community. ARTSCAPE has always been a bit touristsy but now it's going over the edge. I'm really saddened by the Baltimore Office of the Promotion of the ARTS (BOPA). They're also the ones responsible for the RIDICULOUS problematic Bromo Seltzer art studio fiasco--endless hoops and credit checks for artists and an all-but rigged competition to get studio space...and the space is too expensive for most artists. We really need to speak out more about this stuff and organize."]]>

<![CDATA[BALTIMORE ARTISTS ONLY - Artwork is needed for the finale scene of a feature length romantic comedy being filmed entirely in Baltimore in August 2008. We are looking for artwork that is erotic or highly suggestive in nature (but will pass the censors for an R rated film). The more OUT THERE the better, but it should have something to do with sex or anatomy. Paintings, sculpture, small installations and even live/performance pieces (one or two people) will be considered. If accepted, we would need to use your artwork for 3-5 days. Compensation is SCREEN CREDIT ONLY. Though YOUR NAME will appear in the film credits, in the film the work will be attributed to one of the characters.
