SMART Recovery is a support group for people who want to stay sober and for whom tradition 12-step programs don’t seem to work. Trust me; there are many of us out there. I have been attending SMART Recovery meetings in DC. Their approach is a Rational Approach to not drinking or other compulsions. The meeting is more like group therapy. There are no drunk-a-logs, there is no higher power, and there are no labels. Cross talk is encouraged. There is no religiosity. You take control of your addiction, it doesn't control you.

The first meeting (and on every Monday following) of SMART Recovery in Baltimore will begin on Monday, May 19 @ 7:30 pm at the Sheppard Pratt Campus in Towson. Below is a link to SMART and the SMART DC website. Check it out.

Some SMART participants attend 12-step groups as well as SMART meeting. We encourage you to use whatever “works” for you. then maybe this is for you.

I've had a very difficult past year or two. For many reasons. Throughout the whole time of it, I've felt like a lobster whose shell has been cracked. There are days when I'll be driving in my car or grading papers and tears will start trickling down my face. And I'm not even sure why. I guess the pressure and stress and loneliness of life is just so profound, so overpowering sometimes.

If you can relate to this at all and would be interested in meeting with other people who can empathize with your situation, who can understand what you're going through and will quietly listen and maybe even put an arm around you, then please respond to this post. I'm interested in creating a small gathering of folks who can start to act as an informal support group--where we can meet and talk and share and just be there for one another. Maybe I'll even organize some guided writing exercises as a means of helping us to go deeper, to explore. Writing can be such a powerful way to tap into and better understand our grief, fears and despair.

Hope to hear from you. If not, good luck and stay strong.

Andrew

That being said, let's plan to meet on May 25th at 5:00 PM at the normal location. I'm going to try to bring a camera next time so that I can add a few pictures to the site now that we've reached our 10th meetup, so please let me know ahead of time if you have any warrants out for your arrest and don't want your picture on the site. I was pretty happy with the selection of books at the last meetup (we had a good mix of programming, business, and fiction (with a programming slant)), and I think most people walked away with a little more knowledge than they walked in with. That being said, however, bringing a book is always optional, but if you don't bring one, at least be prepared to join in the conversation. If this date doesn't work for anyone, please let me know so I can try to coordinate a better date.Hope to see you all there!

See the full event details, including location, at http://book-swap.meetup.com/156/calendar/7873381/.

Check out what members are saying about Baltimore Software Book club:

"Well, if you like talking software with smart people, and learning a bit about books on the side, I think you'll enjoy it." - Adam Shackleford

Have you ever thought about becoming a Civil War reenactor?? Do you have a love for history? Have you ever seen a movie like "Gettysburg or Gods and Generals" and wondered what it was like to have lived back them? If the answer is yes and you live in MD, VA, WV, DE or PA then the 57th North Carolina is for you. Below is some info on our unit. And at the bottom is a link to our webpage. Feel free to have a look and we can be contacted from there.

About the 57th North Carolina. 57th Infantry Regiment was organized at Salisbury, North Carolina, in July, 1862, with men recruited in the counties of Rowan, Forsyth, Catawba, Cabarrus, Lincoln, and Alamance. Sent to Virginia, the regiment was assigned to General Law's, Hoke's, Godwin's, and W.G. Lewis' brigade. It fought with the Army of Northern Virginia from Fredericksburg to Mine Run, then returned to North Carolina. After serving in the Kinston area the 57th was ordered back to Virginia. It continued the fight at Drewry's Bluff and Cold Harbor, in Early's Shenandoah Valley operations, and around Appomattox. The unit reported 32 killed and 192 wounded at Fredericksburg, had 9 killed and 61 wounded at Chancellorsville and twenty-two percent of the 297 engaged at Gettysburg disabled. At the Rappahannock River in November, 1863, it lost 4 wounded and 292 missing. On April 9, 1865 it surrendered with 6 officers and 74 men of which 31 were armed. The field officers were Colonels Archibald C. Godwin and Hamilton C. Jones, Jr., and Major James A. Craige.

The 57th North Carolina is a family based Civil War Reenacting Unit based in Baltimore City. We try not to travel more then 3 hours from home, unless we vote to go to a special event. We are currently looking for individules who want to perticiapte in the roles of infantry, medical, and civilian. We attend and take part in all areas of the hobby ranging from battle reenactments, to living histories, demonstrations, talks, and parades. You do not have to have past military, or reenacting experience.

What type of membership can you have and how to join the 57th North Carolina. We have two types of membership avalible, a full member and an associate member. A full member is allowed to take part in all aspects of the hobbie. They can go out in to battles, and do living histories. But they must go to 2 events or more per year. An Associate member is allowed to go to living histories, and march with the color guard, but are not allowed to take the field for any battles. This is more for the Civilian reenactors. This is also set aside for people who dont want to reenact at all, but what to have a say in the unit, like people who had family in the 1862-1865 57th NC. http://www.geocities.com/anv57regnc

Look for the 57th North Carolina in the Aug 08 edition of the Civil War Times, on news stands in July.

Hello there. My name is Kelly, and I am an aspiring screenwriter looking for some peer writers to socialize, network, share, and learn with.

Last year I graduated from college after taking a year-long, seminar-style, screenwriting class. I miss the honest and genuine guidance of a classroom and have not found my own film community home, in Baltimore. So, I would like to start my own "class" of about 6-8 individuals to meet bi-weekly and discuss our own works in progress. These screenwriters, including myself, can write from any genre, and at any skill level. Diversity, as a matter of fact, would be great (i.e., sci-fi lovers, romantic-comedy enthusiasts, experimental types, advanced & seasoned writers, film school graduates and enrollees, beginners, writers transitioning to film, etc.).

I ask for 1.) Only serious individuals respond and 2.) Please know the standard format for screenplays.

Ideally, I'd like to have an initial meeting within this week (based on how many responses) then I will coordinate a meeting at a coffee house so we all can meet and discuss ourselves and projects. Then we meet bi-weekly, where we email our pages at a time deadline the week before our meeting (i.e., if we meet on May 10th, then the scripts are due, via email, by May 3rd) in order to give everyone time enough to read it themselves. Then once we meet we can give a cold read to the materials and discuss them.

Okay, this email went on really long. Thanks for reading if you've gotten this far. I'd like the first meeting to be this Saturday, May 3rd in the afternoon (maybe around 3pm). Times can change depending on the responses, and this would be the initial meet-and-great. Can't wait to hear from you.

-Kelly
