Our drummer left us last month, after a hearing problem forced him to take an extended break from rock music. Since then, I've switched from bass to drums and recruited a friend to fill in on bass, just so we can keep playing until a permanent drummer is found.

I'd like to get back to my instrument of choice (bass), where I'm most comfortable.

We are an original band. Our music recalls the glory years of indie/college/alternative rock with a harder edge, late 80's to mid 90's.
Our influences are bands like Nirvana, Mudhoney, The Pixies, Black Flag, Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, The Melvins, Helmet, REM, Husker Du, Flipper, The Meat Puppets, Mission of Burma, early Flaming Lips, The Replacements.

Age does not matter, singer/guitarist is 29, I'm 45,and our current fill in bassist is in his fifties. But we'd like somebody who's at least got some band experience, can play, and of course old enough to get in a bar legally.

We practice Sunday afternoons/evenings off Harford Road in Northeast Baltimore City. We have a 5 piece drum kit (mine)set up so you don't need to bring yours.
We have full PA, recording gear (free studio time!), and a it's free rehearsal space, no gear you need to bring (except your own kit for shows!)

Not the one in your garden, your metronome! Practice with it. No one has perfect timing, and it's
easy to fall into the "don't worry, in the studio we'll have a click track" belief. Yes, you will have a
click track, but if you're not used to working with it, it can be more difficult to maintain correct timing,
keeping you from focusing on other aspects of the sound you have worked so hard to perfect. Know
your time signature and beats per minute, if applicable. (Yes, they can be determined and/or corrected
in the studio, but that will use valuable studio time.) Edits, dubs and additional tracks will go
more smoothly, and any midi work practically requires it. So practice for your recording session as
if you ARE recording, with thy 'nome!

The Sound Cellar will be posting recording tips like the one above regularly as a service to those
who visit CL. And in part as a counterpoint to those studios, their friends, and individuals who
continue to try to create some sort of 'drama' with negative postings here. We are disappointed
in this lack of professionalism and sorry that you have had to endure it, (when a studio offers
the world's finest processors, recording engines, monitors etc. at $20/hr you can make a lot of
enemies.) To that end, I have decided to post our policies. If you choose not to record here,
we will recommend you to some other studio that has shown itself to be honest, professional,
and of good quality. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the very talented
musicians and writers who have and are, recording here.

The Sound Cellar CL Policies

1. We will not respond to or recognize any negative posting regarding any musician, studio,
performance etc. posted by anyone. We will not get "down in the mud" with those individuals
and/or studios. We will maintain our professionalism.
2. We will not originate such postings.
3.Our theme remains to "Enlighten" by promoting local talent at the lowest possible cost to them
while providing the highest possible quality for them.
4.We will not record anything vulgar, libelous or anti-religious.
5. No booze, drugs, gangstas, crazies please.

$20/HR. includes engineer. STILL the best recording deal in Baltimore, bar none.

My band, The Silver Annex is gearing up to try and re-attack the scene this summer. I need someone who can play rythms AND leads, not someone who is set on playing one way. Soloing ability is a plus, but not really a necessity. I basically need someone who knows how to accent a song in a musical and dynamic way.

We (the few who are left) at The Silver Annex want to let anyone and everyone interested know that we are now having open tryouts for the position of Guitar II.

this is what we are looking for:

-Easy to work with in and outside practice

-Positive attitude to working with a new band

-Interest in playing complex, fleshy and interesting music. This refers to rythms, chords, or any other aspect of our music. The sky's the limit.

-Devotion to sticking with one serious band and prepared to help us pay for the practice space which we (hopefully) will get soon.

Ideally, someone in the 17 to 23-ish age range would be desirable, but thats not as important

My Method provides you with the modes below in all keys by just using one fingering position using all strings across the neck. Just count frets and you’re there! This is not a trick--play modes with no theory knowledge, no memorizing note names, no reading music or TAB. Play in all keys the following modes:

No DJ could possibly add the energy of a live performer, and no band can allow the range of volume necessary to accommodate a small or huge function. My backing tracks are sequenced and my vocals are always live. My technique is used by such acts as: Peter Gabriel, The Black Eyed Peas, Madonna, and many others but NOT by Milli Vanilli! LOL. They are certainly not going to tell YOU their secrets.

They keep it to themselves and the little group of guys they hang with. They are often not any better players than local bar band musicians, they just run in circle of players who make more money.

For a long time playing bars it has been a baseline of $100 per person per gig. If you break that out conservatively, one gig per week:

Gig 4 hours
Set-up/ Tear down 1 1/2 hours
travel to and from gig 1 hour
Rehearsal including travel 3 1/2 hours
Personal practice at home 3 hours

Total 12 hours, take off $10 for gas, plus you're playing a dive and choking on smoke.

You have $90 divided by 12 hours = $7.50 Sounds more like a Mc Donalds gig than an artists's gig. And if you adjust for inflation, that $7.50 is worth more like $4 an hour

So how do you jump into the big money? It's not all that hard. The pros know all the angles, and use them to make big money. Just as a local band musician, AVERAGED over $250 my share. Plus, I played great venues and NO bars. I can show you how it's done.

My band has a steady gig north of balitmore in the Harford County area and we all have pro attitudes and years of experience, but we've yet to find a harmonic instrument player (keys/guitar) who is on par with what we are trying to do. We have 2 or 3 horns depending on our trombone player's D.C. schedule, so we're working with trumpet/tenor/bone/drums/bass and you. We'll be pulling charts from the real book at random but we're trying not to rely on that entirely since we want work up tunes that will suit our audience.

If you have skills, want to play weekly/biweekly/monthly, are dependable, and able to comp, solo, and read charts...well, then you might want to respond to this, if you want to play and make money. Otherwise, I don't want to waste my guy's time, so leave it be.

we're supposed to be reporting that money for taxes? you mean someone's actually making a profit off of their band in this town? If I was to report the money we make, i'd be creating a business for the band, and then all the money put in would go to that, which then I would be writing off all band expenses - studio rent, gas, tshirt/cd/sticker costs, equipment costs, strings, batteries, tubes, electricity, wear and tear on a vehicle, vehicle repair.... what's the point? all that jive costs alot more than anything I ever make from shows, I'm just happy when i can pay band rent from it (which isn't always the case).

considering that, I see no point in reporting it, just for them to tell me that I can have it all back.
The band is doing well, you're playing out a few times a month. The clubs aren't providing sound. You look at renting a sound system - it costs $200 more than you're making!

How hard can it be to run sound?

You splurge a couple, maybe even three, four grand at Guitar Satan and buy a fairly decent sound system.

You even read the manual, learn how to hook it up, use it during rehearsal, sounds fine. Load it in the family van, take it to your next gig.

Maybe you're a little late, the club manager waits til it's all set up, then says "you can't put that there!", something's not hooked up right, the power blows, your bandmates are putting pressure on, you don't know what's wrong, the gig goes up late, it sounds like crap, you're sweating, stressed, not playing your best...

What I do:

Turn up early at the venue, check in with the venue management/ staff,

check out stuff like stage space, location for PA equipment, board etc,

check out the power situation, location and safety,

check out snake and cable runs.

When the band arrives,

help load in,

position PA & monitors,

run the snake,

set up mics & stands,

make sure the power distribution for sound & back line is sane & safe,

set up the board & FX rack,

check the sound system is getting signal to PA & monitors,

run sound check with the band.

Run sound during the show.

At the close of the show,

dismantle sound gear,

wrap cables

help load out.

I generally bring along my own Board, FOH FX rack and a few good mics.

I've been a live sound engineer for over 30 years. I have settled in Baltimore after a long time on the road and I'd like to do my thing locally.

Home recording set-ups

sound systems,

installations,

mics,

mixers,

amps,

Now you don’t have to listen to other players talk about modes while you’re in the dark! I’ve found a way to go completely around music theory and give you access to DORIAN, PHRYGIAN, LOCRIAN, MIXOLYDIAN modes. IONIAN, LYDIAN and AEOLIAN are yours in moments. Yes it sounds like a fantasy, but I can prove it to you at no risk to you. All you have to learn is one pattern that you move around the neck of the guitar or bass. My formula tells you how far to move it-and you have all seven modes listed in every key instantly. This is a way to pass up learning music theory if you just want to learn modes. I’ve been using this system for over twenty years….it works every time. Just ten dollars and I pay the shipping to you. Write and I’ll send you more information. Remember, no risk! This is not a scam.

First of all, signing with them is NOT like signing with a record company/label. They are only "signing" you so that they exclusively do your booking and take a 15% cut of your earnings. They are not going to put you at Ram's Head, Recher, Angels, etc etc etc. Why?!?! Because they venues you have to sell a gazillion tickets and there is no guarantee Starleigh will make any money. They are a company out to make money, period. They DO NOT care about your band making it big at ALL. Actually that would only cause them to lose money if you signed with a label, etc. However, if you do sign with Starleigh, they WILL keep you as busy as you want really...and you WILL make great money in the process. They WILL book you at places like Bamboo Bernies, Looneys, Red Eyes Dock Bar, etc etc. There is a BUILT IN crowd on the weekends at these places/venues...so your band and Starleigh will make money. Starleigh has a HUGE list of venues they deal with and they make contracts with these places before you ever set foot in them so that your band and Starleigh makes money. Starleigh wants cover bands and good cover bands. So there are ups and downs with Starleigh. The UPs are that you can play ALOT, make great money. The Downs are that you cant book anything yourself without Starleigh taking a cut...for like 2-3 years. They take 15%...which isnt bad at all when you are making like $1000 on a Sat night. The problem for bands not with Starleigh is that they have monopolized the region. Starleigh tells clubs that if they deal with non-Starleigh bands...then they will pull their big money bands, etc.etc. It's all about contracts and money kids.

So let's summarize
STARLEIGH WANTS YOUR MONEY...ok fine, they are a business ya know.
DOES NOT CARE IF YOU ARE A BAND TRYING TO MAKE IT BIG
IS NOT A RECORD LABEL/ORIGINAL BAND PROMOTER WHATSOEVER...although they will dispute this.

My advice for a young up and coming band (if you are GOOD)...is to get with Starleigh for about 2-3 years just for exposure...play 90% covers and promote your originals/mix them in at a show. Then when you get a fanbase going, tell them about a show you may book at the Recher, Fletchers, Rams Head, etc. This way you are building interest and a fanbase, you are making money, and you are playing out ALOT. Only a few local bands have been successful doing this, but it's a start.
