Swimming Boat Intern with the Charles River Conservancy

Summer 2008

The swimmable Charles Initiative has undertaken the goal of bringing swimming back to the Charles River. For many years swimming was an important part of the life of those who lived in the cities of Boston and Cambridge. Numerous beaches and bathhouses lined the river's banks allowing thousands of people to have the chance to swim on a daily basis. This persisted until the mid 1950s when increased knowledge of human health risks associated with the river caused the park agency to close the river to swimming indefinitely. With the new awareness of the challenges facing the river the Charles River Watershed Association was formed and began to tirelessly work to clean up the river. By the mid 1990's the river was still not suitable for swimming, fishing or even human contact, so the EPA began the "Swimmable and Fishable Charles by 2005 Initiative." This initiative, spearheaded by then regional head of the EPA John DeVillars, partnered with state agencies and the CRWA to monitor and clean up the Charles River. Hundred of millions of dollars have been spent to clean up the water and by the summer of 2004 the water of the Charles had a standard suitable for swimming most days of the year. Although the water itself was considered safe swimming was still not allowed due to the lack of access points and the highly contaminated sediments on the river bed.

The Charles River Conservancy (CRC), incorporated in 2000, undertook the challenge of starting to bring swimming back to the Charles River in 2002. President and founder, Renata von Tscharner, grew up in Europe swimming in urban rivers and has been pushing to bring that European tradition back to the Charles River. In the spring of 2007, the CRC hired a Swimmable Charles Coordinator who is organizing the various efforts. For more information on the Charles River Conservancy and swimming please visit our website www.thecharles.org.

At the current stage of the Swimmable Charles Initiative the CRC is seeking a summer intern with vision, design and engineering skills, and a passion for invention to help create a floating swimming structure on the Charles River. As a first phase, the Swimming Boat Intern would spend 175 hours (the equivalent of one full time month) researching existing floating swimming structures in the US and Europe, and providing a conceptual design for the Charles River that could be used for preliminary site development. Additional hours devoted to more detailed design could be negotiated as a second phase.

The Swimming Boat Intern would be paid a stipend of $12 per hour. Specific working arrangements, hours and dates can be negotiated with the successful candidate.

Please send a resume and cover letter to Ben Martens bdm@thecharles.org or call 617.300.8173 if you have any questions.
