More than 25 million people suffer from phobias and panic attacks each year, yet only a few seek treatment. You are not alone. Come and join this group and learn how to cope with anxiety and panic attacks. In this group, we will cover tools and techniques that will allow you to turn your fearful and negative thoughts into positive and calming ones. In turn, you will be able to take control over your fears and enjoy a better life.
About Facilitator: For the first twenty five years of my life I suffered with anxiety and panic attacks. After years of medication and counseling, I was no closer to understanding or overcoming my condition. I dedicated myself to years of research and by exploring different alternatives, I've developed a process that enables me to show others how to move past their current challenges with anxiety. I truly believe, with direction and support, anyone, given this guidance, will then be able to move forward in overcoming their anxiety and panic.

I am in Braintree, but would welcome parents from anywhere !! I thought it would be nice to get together with other parents who are dealing with these issues. This would be more of a social gathering to share thoughts, feelings and of course information. There are alot of services out there that can help our children. I am willing to host on a bi-monthly basis. We can see how that works out. We can also try small outings with parents and children or just with the parents. Let's meet and discuss our ideas !!

Share ideas, techniques - and NEW RULES OF ENGAGEMENT WITH STUFF! Subject matter specialists welcomed to share expertise. Let's get to know one another and share how this group can best help.
And let's be activist: bringing reports of progress, not just excuses for commiseration. Should we try bar charts to track pounds of stuff discarded last month, with photos as proof? While I myself am not TOO messy (in fact, am rather organized), I am FED UP by having too much stuff in my home! I'm working to replace that with more PEOPLE. If -- WHEN -- we succeed, we celebrate together, OK? OK! Within just a month of launching, our group shot to #5 on the Largest Meetup Groups of our type; ~1 month later, we're #4! Let's convert that momentum into the sphere of achieving our decluttering goals, too! Help us make that happen ... in the process, improving the world around YOU! It's FUN! So we look forward to meeting you!

Boston-and-Beyond Decluttering May Meeting

Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at 6:00PM

6:00 - 6:30 pm - Socialize (please bring your own goodies if you want any!) ... I might bring a digital camera to post a photo of the meeting on our Meetup web site IF participants grant permission (please notify me of any privacy concerns).

6:30 - 7:30+ pm - Overcome Your Mental Clutter

If anyone knows about mental clutter, it would be Shel Horowitz, copywriter, marketing/publishing consultant, environmental/political activist, ethics and frugality expert, and award-winning author of seven books (most recently, Principled Profit: Marketing That Puts People First and Grassroots Marketing for Authors and Publishers). Shel will address the challenges of:

* Having too many interests

* Dealing with an average 300 incoming emails each day

* Managing numerous simultaneous client projects and many more for his own business development

* Maintaining nine different websites (one orchestrating an international campaign)

* Staying current on the multiple industries comprising his diverse business

* Juggling schedules for a busy family of four

~7:30 - 8:30 pm - Group problem-solving + input to future Meetups: topics, schedule, venue, speakers, organizers, activities, resources: how to best help YOU?

8:30 - 9:00 pm -- Wrap-up

Unmetered on-street parking available, + 3 visitor parking spaces nearby. Public transportation: Take Red Line or bus to Porter Sq., then MBTA Bus #87 from Elm St bus shelter beside Shaw's market, to Union Square; bus stops one block from our venue ... or take Bus #86.

***

For inspiration:

* Lessons from a Goose: www.problogger.net/archives/2005/05/19/blogging-in-formation-lessons-from-a-goose

* Seabiscuit documentary about the beloved "little brown racehorse" who became proxy for this nation during the Great Depression: anatomically comical in respects (an "equine catastrophe!"), with an abysmal track record as a colt, Seabiscuit appeared best suited for hauling ice carts. But a wise trainer caught a certain look in his eye and took him on ... inspiring generations. Tears well in my eyes as I watch Seabiscuit's spirit spark and then focus, head to head against the magnificent, seemingly invincible War Admiral -- and race "to parts unknown!"

* Batteries ... plain commodities vital for many applications: music, work (even TASERS!). Each of us is like a battery: sometimes only one is needed for a job; usually more, to create synergy. Clutter MAY be a clue that more "batteries" are needed to complete a connection for the matter and energy stuck around us to flow again -- helping us do what we want MOST. How to better share the wealth we've collected and attract more batteries to "rock our world"? What's special about your stuff ... why keep it around? Might sharing about it help to release it?

* Saving Private Ryan movie opening scene: military risking their lives for our freedom to create value. (Also: clutter can't fight back!)

* Chocolate calcium "chews" vs. chalky tablets ... which do you suppose are used more often?

If you can't attend, let us know your wishes ... and ideas to make declutteringmore FUN, increasing our chances for success -- such as (friendly) competitions for:

- most $ earned by eBay/selling stuff

- most creative way to reward oneself

- the inspiration/strategy/technique/resource/organization/person most helpful for clearing clutter

- most progress made decluttering

- most value added to a space cleared of clutter

- best use/home found for stuff

- idea to make decluttering MOST FUN

...or find ways to best motivate YOU, to share at meetings or on our Message Board.

For those who requested suggestions to start NOW -- how about analyzing what's accumulating: most related to security (finances, job, work), sentiment (mementos), projects (reminders of to-do's)...? Often much of a problem can be attributed to relatively few causes ... e.g., 20% of organizations sending us junk mail may be responsible for 80% of our clutter! Determine the Worst Offenders and remove our names from the mailing lists to TURN OFF THE SPIGOT of junk into our lives.

Resources I've found helpful include:

* Mike Nelson, Stop Clutter from Stealing Your Life

* Stephanie Winston's & Julie Morgenstern's books

* David Allen, Getting Things Done

* Sallie Felton, www.salliefeltonlifecoach.com

I would love to get an informal group of people together at my place a couple of times per month to read French poems, pieces of theater or short stories out loud perhaps with discussion afterwards... At first I would be happy to provide pieces -- It would be a great way to improve our French, enjoy French literature and get to know other francophiles... Please let me know if you are interested! Shalom! | This group was formed so people can get together and discuss books over coffee or dinner. Right now, we're meeting on the third Tuesday of the month at cafes and restaurants that are close to the T. If you want to set up a different group that meets on a different night or other location, we'd love to see it.

If there's a book you feel passionate about and want to set up a meeting to discuss, feel free! Just post an event and make sure that everyone has enough time to read the book. It can be fiction or non-fiction. All we ask it that it be in paperback, so we don't go broke buying books :-)

Another idea is "theme" reading. If anyone is interested in forming a group (or even a single meeting) to read a series of books by a particular author or genre (history, science fiction, Booker Prize winners, etc.), just set up a meeting. You'll be surprised as to how many people share your interest.

Also, if there's a local author reading (Brookline Booksmith has a lot of events) or other book related event (book fair, library event, etc.) you can also post it here. Even if you want to just get a group of people together to discuss recent books or authors, we'd welcome the opportunity.

Have fun! This isn't school, this is just a way for "readers" to get out of the house and talk about books.

A brachial-plexus injury (Shoulder Dystocia/Erb's Palsy) is a nerve injury. The nerves that are damaged control muscles in the shoulder, arm, or hand. Any or all of these muscles may be paralyzed.

Children with BPIs are affected in different ways. Here are some examples:

* Some children have no muscle control or feeling in the arm or hand.
* Some children can move their arms, but have lil control over the wrist/hand.
* Some children can use their hands, but cannot use the shoulder/elbow muscles.

Your child's disability depends on which nerves are injured and how severely they have been damaged.

The brachial-plexus is a network of nerves. It conducts signals from the spine to the arm and hand. These signals cause the arm and handmuscles to move.

What Causes Shoulder Dystocia/BPI's?

Although injury can occur at any time, most BPIs happen during birth! About 2-3 babies in 1,000 suffer BPI's at birth. About 1 in 10 of these need treatment. The possible treatments are exercise, therapy, and/or surgery.

Are there risk factors for Shoulder Dystocia/Erb's Palsy/BPI?
Yes.

What are the risk factors?

With suspected larger babies (over 8 lbs. 14 oz), gestational diabetes, fetal asymmetry, maternal obesity, overdue baby (over 40 weeks old), short maternal stature (that means a short mama), contracted/flat pelvis, weight gain of over 35 lbs., protracted first stage of labor, and/or prolonged second stage of labor are just some of the ones we know about not to mention if you had a history of any of these in prior pregnancies or history of a BPI/Shoulder Dystocia during previous deliveries and eight years or more since the last birth.

Other increased risks during birth may be but not limited to, epidurals, because of the loss of the sensation of pushing and the baby may descend into an awkward position. The use of vacuums or forceps and induced laboring drugs!!!

What are the 4 types of nerve injuries?
There 4 types of nerve injuries...

An avulsion: the nerve is torn from the spine.
A rupture: the nerve is torn but not where it attaches to the spine.
A neuroma: the nerve has tried to heal itself, but scar tissue has grown around the injury. The scar tissue puts pressure on the injured nerve. As a result, the nerve cannot conduct signals to the muscles.

Praxis: the nerve has been damaged but not torn. These injuries heal on their own. If your child has praxis, you should see improvement within 3 months.

One or more of the nerves in the brachial-plexus may be injured. The nerves may have the same/different kinds of injuries. Because the injuries cause the same symptoms, it's difficult to know what kind of injury has occured.

Surgery for BPIs -

Surgery may help children who do not recover by the age of 5 months. Nerve surgery is done by a pediatric neurosurgeon. The purpose of surgery is to improve how well the arm functions. Nerve surgery ismost efferctive when it is done between the ages of 5 and 12 months.

After children turn 1 year old, the surgery may not be as successful. For some children, neurosurgery isn't recommended nor is it sucessful. In these instances, other procedures can be done totransfer muscles and tendons. This surgery is done by a plastic surgeon when the child is older.

Exercises for BPIs -

We recommend daily exercises that help to keep the muscles and joints moving normally. They are called range of motion exercises. If your child isn't able to use muscles in the arm/hand, these muscles will stay weak. The arm may not grow normally, and you may feel tightness in some muscles and/or joints. A joint that stays in the same position all the time can actually "freeze". Exercises keep the muscles and joints flexible. When the nerves start working better, the muscles and joints will be ready to work.

An OT/PT (occupational/physical therapist) will work with your child. The OT/PT will also help you (the parent) learn to do the exercises at home. Most parents need to do the range of motion exercises at home with their children 3-4 times a day for several years.

BPIA also wants to help other non-profit groups with the challenge of making birthing professionals and supporting staff follow specific protocols to aid in prevention of this preventable injury and begin tracking babies at risk for and ending up with the BPI diagnosis.

If you see yourself in either of these scenarios, consider joining me in really letting this part of ourselves go, so that we can have more peace and energy in our daily lives:

1) You know you have to pay a bill or make a phone call--but every time it crosses your mind, you can always think of something more important that you have to do first.

2) You have a free evening and are excited to get some things done around your place. 2 and a half hours later, you've worked really hard at 7 different things but still are no further along than when you started the night.

| I'm a 24 year old Salem resident and I love comics. It's hard to find other women who are into comics and I would really love to start a Comic Book Club with other like minded women. I don't really read superhero comics, but I am willing to give anything a try. Marvel Zombies was genius! I think we would meet once a month or biweekly in Salem and read a different trade book for each meeting.

I read: The Walking Dead, Fables, Buffy: Season 8, Ex Machina, Strangers in Paradise, Y: The Last Man, etc...
