<br>
<br>
Thank you for reading this!
<br>
<br>
We are looking for a special, easy-going, highly effective nurse (RN) to be a nationwide contact for patients using our advanced medical equipment. The specifics are below, but you must minimally have both a med/surg background and an extremely pleasant telephone manner to work with a wide array of patients and clinicians using our device.
<br>
<br>
Who We Are and What We Do
<br>
<br>
We are a small, growing Newton Center medical device firm marketing sophisticated but simple-to-use FDA-cleared equipment. The device offers very rapid, extremely effective non-invasive treatment for peripheral vascular disorders (e.g. non-healing wounds, post-mastectomy lymphedema, venous insufficiency, etc.).
<br>
<br>
Our device profoundly affects patient lives. For example, many of our patients have diabetic wounds heading to amputation but, with use of our equipment, their limb can very often be salvaged. As another illustration, women with serious post-mastectomy lymphedema almost always see extremely rapid reduction in their symptoms--and may actually become asymptomatic--after using our equipment only a short time.
<br>
<br>
Clinical outcomes with our equipment for the array of peripheral vascular conditions are consistently excellent, if not stunning. We also take the high road all the time. Patients come first, and we do things honestly and ethically. It’s the best way to do business.
<br>
<br>
Most recently, we began using our equipment for Sports Medicine and just developed a new model for sports-related situations: post-workout, post-surgery and post-injury. More than a dozen pro teams, championship college teams and the military (Navy SEALS) are now using our sports unit and they are getting extraordinary clinical results.
<br>
<br>
We are also doing clinical research to expand the use of our equipment to other diagnoses. In fact, we believe we can change the entire medical approach to peripheral vascular disease, particularly non-healing wounds which are now so common, so costly and so resistant to healing with current care.
<br>
<br>
In other words, we are doing seriously interesting, exciting things! Additionally, our company goal--something we always strive for--is to far exceed customer expectations.
<br>
<br>
Our Patients
<br>
<br>
Our patients are pediatric to geriatric and bariatric, receive our equipment on prescription from clinicians and use it at home. Often, though, they need help—patients may be elderly and may not remember just what the doctor said to do; there is a serious clinical issue and you, he clinical nurse, needs to confer with the PCP; there seems to a problem with the device or something is confusing; the adult son or daughter wasn’t at the doctor with the elderly patient and needs encouragement and assistance with the device; there is an insurance issue; or.... In other words, you work closely with the patient and family, albeit from a distance, to effect excellent outcomes.
<br>
<br>
Our patients often have long-term clinical problems that have defied even the very best standard treatment, and they may now have little hope. As one of our nurses guiding patients to correctly use the equipment, you inject hope--serious and substantive--and your own dose of optimism into what would otherwise be a bleak situation. The clinical outcomes you will help bring about for some pretty serious diseases are very real and very remarkable.
<br>
<br>
The Special Nurse We Are Looking For
<br>
<br>
So, we are looking for a full-time very special nurse for telephone contact with our patients nationwide. You must be a caring RN with a terrific telephone personality and a lot of patience for our patients. You’ll guide them on how to use the device; answer their technical questions or refer to other staff; and interact with their families when appropriate. You may offer patient education within the scope of our equipment. For others, you may carefully coordinate care with their PCP or specialist.
<br>
<br>
We are currently organized so that each of our nurses is responsible for following patients from specific prescribers. That way, one nurse is the point person for that prescriber, gets to know how that office operates, becomes familiar with the staff there and can help patients relate back to the prescriber as needed.
<br>
<br>
We will, of course, teach you all about the device and how to help your patients get the extraordinary, rapid clinical results that are the hallmark of our product. The equipment itself was designed for extreme user friendliness, but there are the usual ins and outs you’ll need to master.
<br>
<br>
You will also see patients in our local office, which we are now expanding, and in area hospitals or medical providers’ offices, to sharpen your understanding of the equipment and the clinical outcomes it offers
<br>
<br>
As above, you’ll be in contact with clinician offices around the country to help us get needed paperwork, clarify patient matters and the like. So, you need to know how to very effectively speak with secretaries, nurses, doctors and other prescribers.
<br>
<br>
To give you a better idea of things, here are comments from an e-mail our most recently hired nurse sent to all company staff after her initial training here:
<br>
<br>
“I made my first patient follow-up call this afternoon and got some great feedback. I spoke to a patient’s wife (the patient has been using our equipment since 11/07) who said it ‘is a godsend’ and went on to tell me that her husband ‘is doing so much better now, his legs don’t swell anymore and he’s even walking without his cane!’ She was sincerely appreciative of our follow-up with her and her husband as well.”
<br>
<br>
Our Dream Applicant (in no particular order):
<br>
<br>
-RN with Massachusetts license (or able to secure one)
<br>
-several years of clinical experience, with at least some med/surg background; wound care experience is useful but not at all essential
<br>
-real smarts and good clinical judgment
<br>
-comfortable with medical equipment
<br>
-able to write appropriate clinical notes in the chart
<br>
-excellent customer service and patient education skills are required
<br>
-an easy-going, soft-spoken, supportive telephone personality who can laugh and ably interact with the range of patients--e.g. parents of patients, the elderly, cantankerous (only a few!), hard-of-hearing, etc.
<br>
-real enthusiasm for doing good clinical work and always striving for excellence
<br>
-highly responsible, utterly reliable professional
<br>
-ability to take direction and very able to say only the right things
<br>
-very, very organized and methodical; keeps paperwork in order
<br>
-follows up in a timely manner
<br>
-pretty decent computer skills needed, especially Word and e-mail (this is a MUST and we will ask you to demonstrate it)
<br>
-superb work ethic
<br>
-able to really keep things confidential
<br>
-good penmanship (really!)
<br>
-likes people, likes patients and enjoys talking with them
<br>
-a valid driver’s license and access to a car
<br>
<br>
OK, we may be dreaming--and fully realize that no one person embodies all these wonderful traits--but it gives you an idea of the type of person we aim for.
<br>
<br>
You must be a “can-do” professional with an “it’s no problem” personality who easily responds to direction but who takes appropriate initiative. In other words, do you harmonize really well with others and are you really nice?
<br>
<br>
Since many of our patients live in different time zones (even Alaska!--we have patients using our equipment up there on generators, since they don’t have utilities), there may be occasional evening work or just staying late at the office.
<br>
<br>
About Our Company
<br>
<br>
We have wonderful, supportive professionals and the atmosphere is quiet, extremely cooperative, high-volume and pretty fast-paced. So there is simply no room for unpleasant, unproductive people. In other words, if you have ego problems or are passive-aggressive, please spare us!
<br>
<br>
Our staff includes nurses plus operations and documentation specialists and others. We are very, very respectful of each other and uninterested in one-upmanship. All of us are working here to add real value and because we are doing important things. That has to be your agenda, too.
<br>
<br>
The president/CEO of our company developed the equipment after a decade of work with thousands of patients. She is a physician (MD) with a doctorate in bioengineering from an Ivy League university. Like the medical professional we want to hire, she is highly organized and deeply into the details: every “i” gets dotted, and every “t” gets crossed, something you will be expected to do as well.
<br>
<br>
Nonetheless, she is supportive, flexible, laughs a lot and is most enjoyable to work with if you are the right person. Even more, she is a teacher who generously shares her extensive medical knowledge, savoring with you the successes--and weathering the occasional disappointments--that come with the business of medicine. While our president provides our clinical leadership and support, this position relates to our assistant director of nursing, herself a nurse with extensive teaching and clinical background in a major academic medical center.
<br>
<br>
Equally important, we want the person in this position to be able to brainstorm with us, parse out the issues, contribute ideas and considered thinking, ask good questions and collaborate on solutions.
<br>
<br>
Confidentiality
<br>
<br>
Confidentiality is a way of life here--both because we are a private company and because we adhere to the strict Federal privacy guidelines applicable to the healthcare industry. So, in addition to being skilled and honest, you must be able to keep things to yourself. (Like the Las Vegas ads, what happens at your desk here stays here.)
<br>
<br>
Your Clinical Background
<br>
<br>
Our current nurses came to us from diverse clinical backgrounds. One practiced for fifteen years, left the profession to raise a family and last year returned to work. Another was an interventional cardiology nurse for twenty years at a world-class academic center. A year ago, she felt she needed to leave the hectic nursing floor but wanted to continue making significant clinical contributions. A third nurse graduated with a BSN five years ago and worked in academic centers. She, too, was challenged by constantly changing shifts but still wanted to offer first-class nursing at a high level. Each of these superb professionals found a meaningful home here.
<br>
<br>
In other words, aside from at least some med/surg background, which we feel is really important for the position, your own particular clinical experience is not as relevant as the smarts, skills and personality for our patients and our company. We’ll teach you what you need to know and as long as you can pick it up quickly--and it’s not all that complicated!--you’ll be fine. You’ll also get the supervisory support you need to confidently do the work.
<br>
<br>
Salary and Benefits
<br>
<br>
We respect the people we work with, pay competitively and offer some good benefits:
<br>
<br>
-BCBS HMO with drug and vision coverage--fully paid
<br>
-Delta Dental--fully paid
<br>
-a total of six weeks Paid Time Off (PTO)
<br>
<br>
Our extremely pleasant offices are in a park-like setting with free parking, and we are walking distance to the Newton Center T stop and to Boston College. You’ll find all your colleagues here very friendly, very encouraging and accommodating, and you’ll have a chance to make a truly valuable, even unique, contribution to medical care.
<br>
<br>
Please reply to sigmaboston@yahoo.com. Your response MUST include both a detailed resume with full contact information AND a thoughtful letter that really speaks to us--use the opportunity to explain what your resume doesn’t, and why you think you are that special person for this job. Resumes unaccompanied by a substantive letter will not be considered. If what we read even comes close to the professional we are looking for, we’ll be in touch.
<br>
<br>
Once again, thanks for your interest!
