We need help with my husbands teeth. We do have insurance but it sucks! We are not on welfare or any other form of gov. assistance. My husbands teeth are really bad, crooked, yellow, cavities etc. He was raised with parents that didn't take him to the dentist or doctor for that matter and we have been slowly trying to fix his teeth for a few years now. We now have a child and I don't want our child to be grossed out or scared of her daddy. We can't get family pics taken because he won't smile, we don't have pics of us smiling together that much because of his teeth and we have been together for over 5 years! My husband would even accept dentures - he would be a "guinea pig" for the OSU dental school etc. We are willing to do anything at this point to fix his smile. From the exposure of another culture to the rewarding sense of fulfillment, there are five reasons to open one’s home to students studying abroad.
<br>
<br>
1-Personal and familial development.
<br>
<br>
Be it travel, school or work, foreign interaction is a part of life. When individuals and families, open their home to a student studying abroad, personal development is inevitable. Familiarization with other races, cultures and ethnicities expands the mind to the new and exotic. It offers the entire family a fast study on how to be adaptive to foreign interactions, demonstrates how similar and different everyone is.
<br>
<br>
2-Newfound respect and understanding.
<br>
<br>
Once hosts open their homes to exchange students, a natural family-like relationship transpires between the foreign exchange student and the host family. Learning about another person’s ancestry represents an understanding of the world as seen from the foreign exchange student.
<br>
<br>
3-Inspires new language possibilities.
<br>
<br>
As globalization redefines the world we live in, learning a new language is a rapidly growing asset in the business world. It can be beneficial for both a host and their family. When children are exposed to foreign exchange students, they can learn the fun and simplicity of learning a new language. Hosts, who speak the native language of the foreign exchange students they support host, can brush up on the language.
<br>
<br>
4-An enriching life experience.
<br>
<br>
A fresh perspective along with a renewed appreciation can be learned from the host and foreign exchange student. The co-mingling of divergent ethnicities alleviates the potential of prejudice against other cultures – helping to unite the world making it safer for future generations.
<br>
<br>
5-Lifelong Acquaintance.
<br>
<br>
At the conclusion of a study abroad student’s term, many hosts, families and students remain long-term friends. Saying good-bye represents the next phase of the newly developed, lifelong relationship and a rewarding lifetime experience.

If you've ever thought about welcoming an exchange student into your home and family, now's the time to learn more. AFS, the leading international high school student exchange program, needs families in our community to host high school students for an academic year or six months. Students arrive in August.
<br>
<br>
AFS students come from more than 40 countries and represent many different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. All kinds of families can host--two-parent households with young children or teenagers, single-parent families, families with adopted children, foster parents, as well as couples and single people who do not have children or who have grown children. One of the most important characteristics of a host family is being eager and excited to share your life and activities while providing the same kind of care, support, and comfort as you would to your own child or family members.
<br>
<br>
Local AFS Volunteers enroll students in high school and support students and their families to help both gain the most from their experience. In addition to host families, AFS needs people who are interested in becoming volunteer liaisons to work locally with families and their hosted students. Anyone interested in learning more about hosting or volunteering with AFS should visit www.afsusa.org or respond to this ad.

AFS Intercultural Programs/USA is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization. The mission of AFS is to work toward a more just and peaceful world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership.
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
Students like these will be arriving in our community:
<br>
<br>
Daniel from Peru
<br>
Daniel likes to draw, paint and listen to music. He likes to swim, but doesn't get to as often as he would like because of school work and studying. He is social and respectful and likes to spend time with his family and friends. Daniel's brother came to the US with AFS in 2004.
<br>
<br>
Alejandro from Colombia
<br>
Alejandro is very studious. He is currently studying crude oils engineering at the National University in Medellin City. He attended the most prestigious high school in Colombia. Alejandro says that he is calm, although can be out going when necessary. He loves going to the gym and working out, he enjoys playing some sports with his friends. Alejandro is a hands-on person and enjoys setting tasks that are challenging but can be completed well.
<br>
<br>
Klaus from Denmark
<br>
Klaus enjoys computer role-playing and meets at a live RP club weekly. His other major interest is Magic trading cards. He leads his friends in these activities. "Besides this there are books, books, and more books." Klaus is improving his drawing.
<br>
Klaus' keen sense of humor comes out in his application. He is quiet, happy, and intelligent. His mother describes a trusting, caring, and sensitive
<br>
young man. Klaus likes to be intellectually challenged.
<br>
Klaus wants to travel, to "see other places than little Denmark." He hopes his exchange year provides a "deeper understanding of US culture and politics."

<br>
<br>
Measle's Animal Haven is holding a dog wash at the Alum Creek Dog Park in north Columbus Ohio on Saturday Aug. 2, 2008 from 10am-6pm. We will also be microchipping dogs from 12-4pm (with no fees to register the microchip or to change the owner information in the future). No cats, please! :-)
<br>
<br>
Our goal is to raise money so we can continue to save lives, and all proceeds will go directly to care for our current and future rescue dogs. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal rescue and we are the only rescue in Central Ohio that solely focuses on rescuing pit bulls (and senior dogs). We also team with other organizations such as Pittie's Place (www.PittiesPlace.com) to fight BSL and educate the public about pit bulls.
<br>
<br>
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?
<br>
<br>
FIRST, we really need dog washers!! Please contact Lisa at Lisa@pittiesplace.com to sign up. You do not have to stay the whole day - we will be grateful for your help for even an hour or two, or you can sign up for a shift (e.g., 10-1, 1-4, 4-6). It will be fun and you will be volunteering for a really good cause!
<br>
<br>
SECOND, if you can't help us wash, please bring your dog(s) out for a bath and nail trim! And if you or someone you know is interested in having a dog microchipped, please bring him or her out to see us from 12-4pm. A microchip permanently identifies your dog as belonging to you.
<br>
<br>
THIRD, please crosspost this message widely and pass the flyer on to everyone you know!
<br>
<br>
Thanks so much - hope to see you and your dog(s) on August 2, 2008!!

<br>
I am a doctoral student at OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY who is researching on issues of racial/ethnic residential intermixing, spatial inequality -- poverty, discrimination, etc. in the Columbus area besides many other places in the US.
<br>
<br>
If you live in any of the following counties - FRANKLIN, UNION, MADISON, DELAWARE, FAIRFIELD, PICKAWAY & LICKING counties then you can participate.
<br>
<br>
Details:
<br>
I am examining how the racial/ethnic residential intermixing/segregation in various neighborhoods of mid-sized metropolitan statistical area like COLUMBUS have changed from 1990 to 2000, and what are the underlying reasons. I have conducted these analyses with available census data, and have identified few "tracts" that have shown high degrees of change (positive and negative). I am now interested in talking to people, as they are the entities who ultimately take decisions on their residential choices. As such, they do have to interact with existing forces of housing market, and probably these experiences and perceptions differ depending upon what race/ethnicity and/or socio-economic class they belong to. This is the focus of my qualitative interviews.
<br>
<br>
Your help will be partially paid in the form of a "gift card" - $$ and but more than that your participation will provide me invaluable and indepth information.

It is not that uncommon to hear the phrase save the rainforest, but this means more than just stopping the bulldozers. This is Austin Petersen from the Libertarian National Committee. I am writing today because I am in need of individuals who are dedicated to the cause of Liberty, and are willing to work for it in their local areas. Volunteers are needed to gain ballot access in your state and it is crucial that we acquire enough volunteers to fill the slates so that Libertarian candidates can run for office in your state. Established in 2003, our organization's mission is to provide homeless Collies and other family-friendly dogs a safe haven where they will receive medical care, nutrition, and love until an approved home is found. To date, we have rescued over 300 dogs. All AHDRO dogs are placed in the homes of approved volunteers until they are adopted.
<br>
<br>
Our organization is run solely by volunteers who share a love for dogs and a passion for our mission. We are seeking loving fosters to provide temporary homes for our rescued dogs that are waiting for their forever home. Fosters are asked to provide care, basic obedience training, house training (if applicable), and socialization (if applicable).

*All dogs are up-to-date on shots

*All medical costs are absorbed by Almost Home

THERE IS AN IMMEDIATE NEED FOR FOSTERS. These volunteers play a key role in our rescue efforts; without them, it would be a challenge to pursue our mission to provide a safe haven for our dogs until they find a forever home.
