I am writing to tell you about an upcoming event that I am very passionate about. The Webster Lake Relay For Life will take place on September 6th & 7th, 2008.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Socity's signture event and will take place in over 4500 communities around the world. Teams of up to 15 people from schools, businesses, families, churches, etc. raise money, and take turns walking around a track. This overnight event is an amazing experience to be a part of. We open with a Survivor lap, followed by an all team lap who are all represented by a different theme. Around dusk there is a Luminaria Ceremony where we remember those who have lost their battle with Cancer, and those wo are still surviving. We go all night, and close the following morning with a touching Closing Ceremony.

Each of us has been touched by Cancer in one way or another, some closer than others. I invite you to put a team together and volunteer for the fun overnight event, or even the day of the event. Whatever form of participation that you are willing to give makes a difference, and makes you a part of saving lives, and finding a cure to this dreaded disease.
Please visit out website for more information www.websterlakerfl.com. This Relay would very much appreciate your support regardless of the level you would like to voluteer at. I can guarantee this is a life changing experience.

Hope to hear from you, and get you involved in this amazing event.

I’m here on behalf of First Descents, an amazing organization that provides whitewater kayaking and outdoor adventures for young adults with cancer nationwide. The reason for my letter is simple, I’m involved with, EddyFlower Vertical Challenge a 32 day kayaking competition, and it is my personal goal to raise $4,000 in support of First Descents.

The young adult cancer population, (ages 18-39) is the most underserved population within the cancer world and the programs that First Descents provides free of charge play a key role in a cancer survivors emotional, psychological and physical healing. It costs First Descents approximately $1,000 per camper for a one week session and your donation will go directly toward providing these much needed programs to a very deserving group of people.

$4,000 may seem like a lot of money to raise, however as a group I know we can do it. Every dollar counts and whether you can make a $15 or $200 donation it will mean a great deal to me and the young adult survivors involved with First Descents. And, your donation is 100% tax-deductable.

Please make your check payable to First Descents and send to: Email me for address

The trip to the island from the port of Rafina (around 1 hour and 15 minutes from Athens) lasts about 2 hours. Visitors arrive at the port of Gavrio, which is 36 km away from the capital, Chora.
Chora was built on a peninsula and ends up in a small island, on which there is still a medieval fortress. This small island is separated from the peninsula by a narrow sea strip, 2-3 m wide and its communication to the land is achieved through a stone made culvert. The central avenue of Chora leads to the sea and the large central square of the Back-room Macker, where stands the homonymic statue, done by a famous sculptor, Michael Tombros. Chora is an aesthetically impressive city and combines the beauties of the old city and its narrow stone made alleys, with the new city of imposing stately homes, built during the previous century, while seafaring in the island reached its peak.

The municipality of Andros has an extended network of footpaths, spreading in a wide area, that have been signaled and chart–mapped by the Cyclades prefecture and the Municipality. Local and tourists ramblers often wander in this footpaths’ network for the extra reason that, due to the landscape, it is not possible, in most cases, to create routes for vehicles.

International group of volunteers will work under the guidance of locals in order to clean, conserve, renew the signals and, generally, to highlight some of the most important footpaths of old times, which used to be the main routes of communication among the villages and ports of the island.

Project language: English

If you ever wanted to be a ghost in Iceland, than this is the opportunity that you have been waiting for.
Stokkseyri is a coastal South Icelandic town in the fertile farming district region of Flói. It is known for its black sandy beach which becomes quite crowded with tourists during summer. The beach is wide and full of driftwood. A long sea wall was erected in the late 18th century to prevent encroachment by the sea and as a shield against Ölfusá river's flooding and high waves. The entire coastal area is open lowland and very windswept with shallow shores.

The village has a rich art and cultural life. Paintings and glass galleries, Ghost Centre and the Center of Ethnomusicology, which are all situated in the Hólmaröst cultural centre. An interesting museum, "Þuríðar cottage" is in Stokkseyri, built in memory of Lady Þuríður Einarsdóttir, captain of a fishing boat in the late 18th and early 19th century, a time when it was considered a unique profession for a woman. The Ghost Centre in Stokkseyri is a Ghost Museum with all of the most famous ghosts in Iceland located in a building by the harbour. Guests walk through the ghost-maze, where they will experience the stories in the environment where they happened. The stories can be listened to in English, German and Icelandic.

Here is a nice description of Stokkseyri in the Icelandic newspaper Grapewine:
“It is a community where one native has a polar bear in the living room, some have horses in their backyard, and almost everyone knows the Foo Fighters on a first name basis, Stokkseyri is located on the south coast only 45 minutes from Reykjavík. This small village of about 500 people is renowned for its natural beauty, but more impressive are the creative inhabitants living there, inspired by the shore and wildlife in the surrounding area.
Stokkseyri wasn’t much of a draw for tourists a decade ago. Natives almost entirely depended on the fishing industry, and the 26-metre-high lighthouse Knarrarósviti was really the only attraction for travellers. Times have changed, the fish processing moved to nearby town Þorlákshöfn and with companies like Kajakferðir, Töfragarðurinn, restaurant Við fjöruborðið and all kinds of museums the village is becoming a popular spot for both locals and foreigners arriving by thousands every year to take part in various activities.”

The volunteers will be acting as ghosts in the Ghost museum and also, they will be working closely with the staff of the museum helping them with all other necessary tasks. They will also give a helping hand in a family park, taking care of the animals and the visiting guests. This project is perfect for people with artistic skills, especially theatre. Five volunteers will be participating in each group.
