Kolkata alias Calcutta is full of life and bustle, verging on the chaotic as traditional occupations rub shoulders with ultra modern industries. Kolkata is India's second largest city, the capital of West Bengal and formerly, the capital of British India (1772-1912); it is a city with a great deal of charm - its imperial monuments, strong cultural and religious flavor.
However it is also suffering from a terrible lack of hygiene, illiteracy and unemployment are rampant, and the first to suffer from these poor living conditions are the children. In an effort to bring a bit of joy back to the faces of the street and orphan children of Calcutta, international group of volunteers together with local NGOs will conduct a Happy Hearts Workcamp: it will consist of a series of “Happy Hearts” Sessions in which the group of volunteers will organise activities to entertain and open the minds of the children to the outside world. The volunteers will also undertake some renovation work in the schools like painting, renovation of toilets, kitchens and playgrounds, etc.
This special project will feature one week of creative education and one week of continuous special activities. In our regular programs, we have a day or two to plan for the “Happy Hearts” but in this project, each day of the second week will have visit activities such as visit to the planetarium, amusement park, movies, and so on.

For more details and to see other projects in India please visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-india.htm or give us a call: 604-628-7400

For volunteer opportunities in other countries: www.cadip.org

There are so many ways to make a difference in kid’s lives. Volunteering at The Urban Farm is one of those ways. We are looking for volunteers to fill specific jobs/roles at TUF this Fall. Do any of these jobs appeal to you? If so, email us to discuss your interests.

You can volunteer once, once in a while, monthly, once a week, or more.

Once:
>> September 11 Adults, youth, and children needed to help spruce up The Farm to get ready for Farmfest on 9/18. We will work from 10 am – 2:00 pm. RSVP if you can help.
>> September 18 We need at least 50 adult and youth volunteers for this event that goes from 1:00 – 7:00 pm. We ask that you volunteer at least a 2 hour block of time.

Once in a while and/or Monthly:
>> Saturdays – We clean animal pens every Saturday morning between 10 and 1:00. Even the youngest volunteers can help with this chore. Sometimes there is garden work as well. Work an hour or all three.
>> Fieldtrips and Birthday Parties – During the week and on weekends, we often need volunteers to help with a child’s birthday party or to lead a fieldtrip. This is a 2 ½ hour commitment.
>> Grantwriting/Frundraising– The present economy has resulted in significant TUF belt-tightening and the number of kids who need scholarships to participate has almost doubled in the last 18 months. Write a local grant proposal or a federal proposal, plan an event or pursue donations.

Weekly or more:
>> 4H Leaders – Adult leaders for goats, sheep, poultry, dogs, and gardening. The new 4H year starts in October. You don’t have to be an expert in any of the areas, just be willing to learn and to help kids with their projects and record books.
>> Embracing Horses Class Assistants – Our beginning level riding classes need adults to help out. Classes meet after school for two hours and volunteers work hands-on with children and horses. We need volunteers on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday. Volunteers are asked to commit to one specific evening class per week for a 12 week session.
>> Office Assistant – If you spend anytime at TUF you know that we are organizationally challenged at times. We are sure that someone breaks in at night and adds more pieces of paper to the overflowing “to be filed” boxes. Joking aside, we could really use some extremely well organized individual to help around the office. Some data entry would be nice too. Any one or two days a week would help.
>> Saturday Morning Activity Coordinator – Saturday mornings at TUF are chaotic to say the least. There may be as many as 100 people on The Farm on a slow day! Classes are going, visitors are dropping by for tours, work days are ensuing, birthday parties are happening, etc. A patient, outgoing person is needed to help keep the flow of activity going, make sure waivers are signed, collect donations and fees, and send people to the right place. Two people could share this job.

CAN YOU HELP? EMAIL The Urban Farm TODAY!
Educational and therapeutic activities for disabled students in Ungaran

February 5 - February 19, 2011
May 7 - May 21, 2011

Ungaran School for the Disabled is located in Ungaran Regency, Semarang. It is about 10 km south away from the city centre of Semarang. This School was founded with the aim to cater for the needs of disabled children and youth in Ungaran and the surrounding areas. Moreover, this school is also aimed to encourage and motivate the disabled children and youth to struggle for their future. It is mainly funded by the Central Java department of health. We would like to host foreign volunteers because we believe that their interaction with the children, during education and vocational classes and other therapeutic activities will be of great benefit as our students have little or no chances to meet and live with people from other cultures. The intercultural dimension that their presence will generate will also be welcomed and valued by the local staff. The support that the volunteers will give to our teaching staff, particularly those teaching English, will be invaluable.
The role of the volunteers will be assisting local teacher in classes like teaching very basic conversation in English, helping teachers in giving training on physical activities of the disabled students like making simple handicrafts, playing, doing simple sport, etc. Volunteers' influence on students is expected to create a sense of knowledge of other realities of the disabled kids and other cultures in a way that improves their own perception of themselves and what they can achieve. Also to open the mind of international volunteers that the disabled students also need attention to face their future. It will also give opportunity for the international volunteers about the treatment that should be done by the families of disabled children.
Study theme: The volunteers will be introduced to the education activities of the disabled students related with Indonesian culture and customs in general.
Leisure time: During free time, the volunteers will have the chance to visit Semarang city, Samp Poo Kong Chinese Temple, Lawang Sewu Building and Gedong Songo Hindus Temples.

For more details about this project and other available projects in Indonesia, please visit : www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-indonesia.htm

This project is part of Cadip's International Volunteer Program: www.cadip.org

617-502-0400

604-628-7400

Think of the qualities of a great city - fun, space, clean air, nature, culture - and Reykjavik has them in spades. Reykjavik offers both the features of a modern and innovative society and the marvelous traits of a unique natural landscape. The population of the Capital Area is about 200,000. It is spread across a peninsula offering a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean from nearly every part of the city. In the summer, you can sit by the harbor at midnight and watch the sun dip slightly below the horizon before it makes its way up again.
During this project, we will collect volcanic stones from specific places in Iceland where nature has shaped and made really beautiful magic stones. Afterwards we will convert them into runes in our workshop in Reykjavik. There are different places around Iceland where we can collect the stones. We will explain to the volunteers the history of those places and the importance of the healing energy from the stones. We will visit the following places:
• Snæfellsnes, where you can find the glacier Snæfellsjökull which is famous for the power and energy that many spiritually-minded people sense. It is said to be one of the seven greatest energy centres of the earth.
• Reynisfjara, the black beach of Vik which is without a doubt the most beautiful beach in Iceland.
• The peninsula of Reykjanes which has a lot of hot springs and new volcanic lava.
By visiting those places we will give to the participants the opportunity to travel in Iceland and to discover and learn a lot about the magic of different parts of the island. The aim of the project is to give to the participants the opportunity to learn about the myths and legends of Runes and the old Viking religion. We will create Runes out of Icelandic volcanic magic stones and produce runes and handicrafts enough for the participant to take one set home and to leave one in the cultural and handicrafts centre in Reykjavik.

This project is a great way to learn about the energy of Iceland and the legend of the Vikings. I'm a Muslim. For the past few weeks, I've been using my spare time to go down to the 16th St. Mall with a sign saying "Questions about Islam? Ask Me." I'm trying to counteract all the misinformation out there right now and the ugliness that's creeping into our national discourse. It's been working fairly well, but there's a definite trend I've noticed: people are much more likely to come talk to me when they see me talking to someone else. I guess it makes me seem more approachable. So here's what I'm looking for: people who have a bit of free time and would like to know more about Islam (or a variety of other things, I spend a lot of time reading and I've been told I'm very educational) who would be willing to come sit out with me on the 16th St. Mall and chat for a while. Whether it's as little as an hour or a regular weekly committment, every little bit helps.

If you can't get to the Mall, find your own way to contribute! Just about any craft store will sell customizable pin-back buttons, and it only takes a dollar and a few minutes to make your own "Stop Islamaphobia" or "Ask me about Islam" button. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I used to think only extremely spiritual people were called to mission trips, but I have since realized that God calls all of us in various ways. His calling in my life has been to minister to and teach English to elementary school children in a remote Karen village in northern Thailand. For the entire year of 2010, I have had the opportunity to show my trust in God’s sovereignty and provision by devoting my year to serving in Thailand. God has blessed me with a love for teaching and a heart to serve others. He has also provided a need for English-speaking teachers in Nong Tao. Here, a husband and wife named Bapi and Pansengchu currently run a hostile for 27 beautiful children, who also attend school with 120 or so peers. None of them speak English well, and all of them have the desire to. My vision, which God is helping me to carry out, is to help meet this need, as well as encourage the already-believers and help to raise up more brothers and sisters in Christ.

This is a journey God has called me to, and I want nothing more than to continue it. I plan to stay for as long as the Lord wants me here, and I trust that He has already chosen who will meet my financial needs. I am currently able to live on about $800 US dollars a month but rely entirely on financial support from others. So if you feel led to support me, I greatly appreciate any level of support you are able to offer. It will continue to make this mission possible, and therefore the ministry God has lead me to will be yours as well. If you are unable or uninterested in giving financially, or even if you are, please pray for this need and for the success of my mission in general. Any Christian service is spiritual warfare, and I cannot expect to succeed without consistent prayer support.

If you desire to be a part of this, I would like to offer to add you to my monthly email update list as well. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this, and if you have any questions, please let me know.

On Mission with Him,
Karen

“‘May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.’” – Numbers 6:24-26

The Youth House School is a small education center for disadvantaged street children and children coming from a poor fishing village, located in the outskirts of Hanoi. The international volunteers will help run the school and will be responsible for keeping the school clean, cooking free lunch for the children, and teaching them basic things about their countries, health, etc. The volunteers will also organize some leisure activities for youth after school. This is a time for cultural exchange and embracing new relationships. The international volunteers will work together with a team of local volunteers, led by a group leader. The volunteers will teach around 15 children every day. Remember, the children are not used to rules and structure in their households, so volunteers must try to implement this by setting an example. The Youth House is also a place where young local people and international volunteers come to explore the cultural diversity, by teaching the children together or organizing leisure activities, such as taking the children to the swimming pool.
These activities are combined with projects to help disadvantaged people at the Fisher Village, who are very poor and live in slum-boats on the Red river. This is done by giving them food, medicines, water filters (for clean drinking water), toothpaste, second-hand warm clothes and free showers in winter, etc.
The Red River is the biggest river in Vietnam. The delta is located in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. The city continues to expand with many people coming from the countryside into the urban area. This however, is an expensive endeavor with the government imposing a tax on people coming from the rural area to prevent a massive influx of people. Some people decide however to come despite this financial situation and thus must live in house boats at the river to escape from having to pay. Since they do not technically live in Hanoi they must pay for school which is usually free until the age of 12. The entire family must work hours that most people would consider inhumane. The children wander the streets begging and collecting rubbish. An entire family barely makes $2 a day.

For more info and enrollment, please go to: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-vietnam.htm

To learn more about the international volunteer workcamps go to: www.cadip.org/workcamp.htm or give us a call:
 617-502-0400

 604-628-7400

Volunteer opportunities in other countries: www.cadip.org

The children, whose fathers or grandfathers were exposed (causing chromosomal damage) or who were contaminated from their mother’s milk, suffer from a range of difficult conditions. While staying in Vietnam Friendship Village, children and veterans are nourished and are provided with free medical care. The children, who may stay there for several years, receive not only basic education, but also some forms of job training.
The Organic Gardening Project was launched in 2004 with the goal of creating islands of a harmonious approach to agriculture within areas of environmental and human devastation - increasing awareness of the consequences of war and, at the same time, demonstrating positive strategies for healing and living. At this moment, the farm is providing about 60% of the village’s consumption of vegetable. It is expected that it will cover all the need and there are products left for sale to raise funds for the village.
Volunteers will help with clearing the site, preparing soil, weeding, planting vegetables and fruit trees, cleaning a fish pond and redecorating the flowers in the garden. Additional activities may include planting trees, moving bricks for construction, collecting garbage and playing with the children or exchanging with local volunteers or farmers.
In the project from January 25 to February 6, 2010, the volunteers will focus on preparing Tet New Year Festival for the children in the Village. It has the features of a modern, forward-looking society which are complemented by a close connection to beautiful nature.
The population of the Reykjavik Capital Area is about 200,000. The project aims to ensure the reproduction of the turtles and preservation of the species for the future. There are two species of turtles arriving to this area: the Negra (Black Turtle) and the Golfina (Olive Riddle Turtle). The people involved in the project will help by collecting eggs, burying them in the turtle camp, taking care of the baby turtles and collecting some statistical data.
Groups of international volunteers will be involved in the project as staff members, which means that they will be very involved in the project and the work.
The goal of this project is to protect the turtles and to help run preservation activities focused on protecting endangered species, at the same time promoting international cooperation and international solidarity.
The main work consists in collecting turtle eggs, burying them again in a secure place, and getting the baby turtles back safely to the sea. This must be carried out at night since the turtles do not go out of the ocean during the day (because of their natural predators, it is safer for the turtles get out of the ocean in the dark). In collaboration with local indigenous people from Colola, the volunteers will seek for the turtles and take care of the eggs and the baby turtles. Locals are very friendly and working with them is very pleasant as they explain to the group what to do.
We need very motivated volunteers who really want to get involved in the work for protection of the turtles and are willing to interact with the local people and their culture.
There are also some extra activities to be done with the local people in order to help improve the town such as setting names to the streets or helping to arrange a multi-purpose playground for the children, and maybe some cleaning tasks, but this depends on the volunteers' initiative. The local people are very open to participate in other activities and the volunteers can also propose their own initiatives, so your ideas are welcome.
Language: The official language of the project is English. Some Spanish would be appreciated.
Location: Colola is a small town located on the Michoacan State coast, between Maruata and La Placita towns. It's a remote place that offers an excellent opportunity to be close to nature, on a virgin beach, with no tourism around. The closest city is Tecoman at 200 kilometers, but other villages such as La Placita that are closer (45 minutes by bus) can offer Internet connection.

For more details, please visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-mexico.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US); 604-628-7400 (Canada)

This project is part of CADIP's International Volunteer Program: www.cadip.org/workcamps.htm

General rules and conditions for participation on our workcamp projects: www.cadip.org

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) invites you to come out and lend a hand on Saturday October 2nd in recognition of the 17th annual National Public Lands Day celebration. This year we will be transplanting Chokecherry trees around the Kerber Creek to help stabilize the creek walls to prevent further erosion.

With the help of many partnerships the BLM began the Kerber Creek restoration project in 2005. This important environmental project focuses on repairing damage caused between the late 1800s - mid 1900s from the Bonanza Mining District. Mine wastes containing heavy metals have had a remarkably disturbing effect on the creek, including the destruction of vegetation, erosion, decreased water quality and death of fish and other aquatic life. These travesties have occurred because the metals in tailing piles are mobile in water. The toxic metals are soaked up by plant roots with water, and cause the plants to slowly die. Without vegetation to support the structure of the creek, the creek freely erodes. To combat the negative effects of the erosion the BLM has started the process of phytostabalization, which is a method that uses lime, limestone, and compost to bind metals and make them less water soluble. This process keeps metals from being absorbed into vegetation.

Since 2007, 60 acres of mine waste along the creek have been phytostabilized, 40 of those acres have been stabilized over the past two years. Partners have contributed over $1.2 million in aid for clean-up. In addition, these partners have contributed over 3,000 volunteer hours towards the project.

If you would like to lend a hand please register online or contact Rob Santoro at (719) 852-6267 or rob (at) voc.org

We will meet at the Villa Grove Trading Post at 8:30am and then caravan approximately 9 miles to the worksite. Please be prepared to work the majority of the day.

What to bring:
? Water
? Sunscreen
? Work clothes you don?t mind getting dirty
? Long Pants
? Hello and thank you for considering me. My name is Bill McLeod and I am the founder of www.singleparentstown.com and the author of the new book "Kickin' Butt as a Single Parent - 99 Tips That Every Single Parent Must Have". I recently came out with my new book and it is getting great reviews. The only problem is that I am self publishing the book and thus having to market it as well. I have been able to secure radio and print interviews already but only have so many hours in the day avbailable. I am seeking help contacting media outlets ( I can train you) as well as getting the book on blogs around the country. I am also looking for help in emailing a letter, that I already have done, to divorce attorneys around the country in hopes that they will by the book for their clients as a gift. My story as to how I became so passionate at helping single parents can be found on my website at www.singleparentstown.com. I believe that my book will transform the lives of parents but just need help in getting the word out there via email and marketing. Ideal job for any parent single or not who is looking to help. I am willing to give you a free copy of the book for your help. Thank you for considering helping me make a change in the lives of so many...
