My name is Derek Dirckson. I am a complete drummer (musician). I have two kits 1 electric the other acoustic. I have been playing studio, clubs, concerts, and all manner of gigs for over 25 years. I have been around the world 9 times. I have lost count of how many times I have toured America. If you are working (at least 3 gigs a month) then why go through the audition process?

I am ready and do not get high and follow leadership. I have found it very difficult to find a gig because most of the cats that call back are young and ask dumb questions like "can you play like so and so?" (I probably taught who they are asking about). The bottom line is I can play anything period. I am professional and I stay with the group (I am not stuck up or arrogant) I am simply looking for a gig.

So if you need a drummer (short term or long term) why keep looking? Call me 313-748-3067 I can do your gig(s) and you will be happy.

You can get more information about me at my music site: http://musicbuilder.org/profile/noskrid

I came off the road about 15 years ago to raise my son. That is it. Nothing deep or terrible. I just want to play with some folks that can play and are working even if that is only 3 times a month.

Call me if you are serious. Why is this so hard???????????????

• Location: Harper Woods
Drummer Here And Ready

I just moved back to town from a stint in ny and need a place to lay my head. My budget is in the neighborhood of 350 a month and I'm reliable for money. Loft space is ideal. I'm versed in the style of life it takes to share a loft, so no worries there, but a house works too. The main thing is just finding some good people I can click with and respect, and hopefully even enjoy some conversation. I'm trying to stay close to downtown so anything around midtown, corktown or eastern market is the goal.
-About me: 24/m, sculptor, work as a metal fabricator, and I have shop space in eastern market. I pride myself on being good people and don't bring any drama and absolutely no sleez. I have a small dog, but he's the buddha of dogs. I mean he doesn't make a sound and really only gets up moves etc for me - It's hard to explain how well behaved this animal is. So if you have a space or know someone who does or you yourself are looking for a roomate let me know-I'd really appreciate it.
-Thanks alot,
Eric

16 March 2010

Detroit: An Open Letter

Hello, I'd like to present myself; my name is Ricardo Alcos and I am a conceptual artist. Conceptual art is defined as "Art intended to convey an idea or concept to the perceiver and need not involve the creation or appreciation of a traditional art object such as a painting or sculpture". If allowed, I would like to impart some ideas that could well change the way Detroit perceives itself.

At the moment, Detroit is seen as a city in decline. Gone are the days of fame and glory. However, it's glorious past is now part of its rich history. Am I the only one who sees a fantastic future? A veritable Phoenix arising from its own ashes? What's required is that Detroit adopt a proper perspective and move on. It can start by recognizing the possibilities afforded by the revolution now going on. The revolution that I refer to is The Green Revolution (Not to be confused with the political revolution in Iran). There are many voices attached to this revolution, coming as it does from every corner. But one thing it does not have, and that is a clear cut center: a point from which everything emanates.

The notion of a green capitol may sound like a stretch, a flight of fantasy, or an idea of the moment, but let me assure you, this is not an idea to be taken lightly. Detroit needs a makeover; no dispute. But it needs to be based on something that no one else is doing. Here lies an opportunity born out of necessity. Here lies a chance for Detroit to re-invent itself; for staking out a claim on its future.

What I offer has been in the making for over 40 years, and has been looking for a place to manifest for over two decades. The process began at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California in 1968, with a self discovery of a long hidden talent, inspired by The New York World's Fair of 1939, but never acted upon. This has led me on a path that culminates in my being able to present to you now, a method by which I think Detroit can climb to greater heights.

These are important issues that demand a thoughtful response, for what I offer is a new sense of direction. Obviously, no small matter. I am cognizant of the fact that the City is engaged in major downsizing. A sad negative that might turn out to be a positive. However, I will need a response. I need to be able to gauge sentiment and openness for change, and to what extent will it go to achieve it. Corresponding via mail and/or speaking via Skype with anyone who knows how Detroit works is an option. Other methods need to be discussed.

For the person or group with interest, I am at your service. See my profile on Facebook, for that will provide you with just a little more information. When you get on site, scroll all the way from the bottom, up. I wish I knew of a better way of getting my message out, but when you're operating on a shoe string, the cheapest and easiest way that offers the least amount of contradiction will work. Enjoy.

ricardo.alcos@gmail.com

SUMMER PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT AT ART & IDEAS CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERY & STUDIO

Art & Ideas’ summer photography show called “Social Realism 2010” is being scheduled for Aug.-Sept. of 2010. Entries are now being considered for spots in the exhibition to show multiple works by two serious local photographers. The juried selection process will place significant emphasis on the social commentary and meaning of the images, as expressed by both the images and thoughtful artist statements. (For reference, artists might consider the “Social Realism” as practiced by photographers in the 1930s – but in our case, we’re also looking for humor and irony depicted about our current situation in USA and SE Michigan!)

Photographers submitting work must reside in Wayne or Washtenaw County.

Entry fee: $10 per entry. Submission must be made using USPS mail only (emailed submissions will not be considered), or in person at Art & Ideas (15095 Northville Rd., Plymouth, MI 48170). Each submission must include the following:
1. An artist’s statement that explains the social commentary made in the images submitted.
2. The artist’s resume.
3. One CD containing 10 to 20 images in JPEG format (at least 1 megabyte file size – width of ~5”). (If sending multiple images, you could group images into series of common themes.)
4. A list of images from the CD, including the size of the printed versions.
5. A non-refundable check for $10 made out to Art & Ideas LLC.
6. The artist’s email address, if he/she wishes to receive notification via email.

Award: A six-week exhibition of the two chosen artists’ works at Art & Ideas in Plymouth Township, showing up to 10-20 images per artist (depending on print size). Artists will be responsible for the printing and framing of their work. (Other contract details will be discussed at the appropriate time.)

Juror: Shaqe Kalaj is artist-in-residence at Art & Ideas. For several years she has exhibited her photography, prints, woodcuts, paintings, and mixed-media pieces throughout Michigan, as well as outside of Michigan in the USA and in Japan and South Korea. Shaqe describes herself as a “content-based” artist who bases each series of work on a “guiding question” of social relevance.

Important dates:
June 30: Final deadline for submissions
July 5: Winners selected; notifications sent
July 20-25: Receive artwork
Aug. 7: Exhibition opening night reception
Sept. 18: End of exhibition
Sept. 19-24: Pick up work
Hello,
I am a visual artist co-curating a show/event in Detroit on May 8. I have attached a description of the show below. I am trying to find guest lecturers for this event. If you are interested, please reply with your information, a proposal, or a request for more information.
Thanks!

--------------------Drawing in the Margins: The Art of Notetaking---------------------

As we rely less and less on pen and paper in our everyday communications at home, in the office, and in classrooms, the opportunity for doodles and sketched notes decreases. This note-doodling becomes a physical representation of our minds at work processing data and a uniquely wonderful instance of image and text coming into simultaneous existence as two manifestations of one thing.

To explore these note-doodles and focus, we will create an environment of speakers and note-takers through a series of lectures and lecture-performances at The Lot in Detroit, MI. The program will feature (approx) 12 lecturers and will cover a variety of subjects: potential topics include art theory, food histories, and Elvis impersonations. Each lecture/performance will run for about 10 minutes with some being shorter and some being slightly longer. The price of admission for guests to attend the event will be only that they take notes in provided notebooks. Following the lectures, we will facilitate discussion and further investigation by displaying the notes and note-doodles in an after-party and later a gallery exhibition.

Looking for female models that can provide a "Mod" look. Mrs. Emma Peel from the 60s' T.V. show "The Avengers" would be the Iconoclastic look we are seeking. I am producing "Art Hell Mutts" to be sold as sculpture with custom made stands.

We want to do these shoots over in Canada. Ideally a Fri. and Sat. night stay over would be perfect. There will be a comfortable cottage on Lake Erie to stay in ...5 bedrooms. We just did one of these a couple of weeks ago with excellant success. There will be no compensation, but you will recieve copies of the best shots.

I am an internationally collected artist refining my craft since graduation from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts in 1975. The photographer Jill Omand will be staying at the cottage with you, as will the other models. I have a cabin acrosss the road, and I assure you there are no trix, or funny business in mind. We will have to coordinate a good weekend when everyone is available.

Tattoos are desirable....we are not looking for "classic" beauty. We want very distinctive/different type of models. Please send a couple of shots back to me with your contact information, and I'll set up a time to interview you with Jill, and take a couple of test shots. We have some good wardrobe already, and at the last shoot the women were sharing wardrobe freely.

This is not going to be all work, and no play...we will feed you really good food (mainly vegetarian), and plenty of wine, and 420 if you're into it. The view alone is worth a million. Check out the photos...be a part of "Art History"! Below is a link to a video that HGTV did about me in 2002. The main thrust of my work when this was filmed in 2002 was high-end leaded glass. Today I am interested in a more "edgy" product. You will need an enhanced license, or a passport to cross. Looking forward to hearing from you!

John Dixon

http://www.hgtv.com/videos/stained-glass-art/2556.html
