I have been playing studio, clubs, concerts, and all manner of gigs for over 25 years. I have been around the world 9 times. I have lost count of how many times I have toured America. If you are working (at least 3 gigs a month) then why go through the audition process? I am ready and do not get high and follow leadership. I have found it very difficult to find a gig because most of the cats that call back are young and ask dumb questions like "can you play like so and so?" <![CDATA[16 March 2010 Detroit: An Open Letter Hello, I'd like to present myself; my name is Ricardo Alcos and I am a conceptual artist. Conceptual art is defined as "Art intended to convey an idea or concept to the perceiver and need not involve the creation or appreciation of a traditional art object such as a painting or sculpture". If allowed, I would like to impart some ideas that could well change the way Detroit perceives itself. At the moment, Detroit is seen as a city in decline. Gone are the days of fame and glory. However, it's glorious past is now part of its rich history. Am I the only one who sees a fantastic future? A veritable Phoenix arising from its own ashes? What's required is that Detroit adopt a proper perspective and move on. It can start by recognizing the possibilities afforded by the revolution now going on. The revolution that I refer to is The Green Revolution (Not to be confused with the political revolution in Iran). There are many voices attached to this revolution, coming as it does from every corner. But one thing it does not have, and that is a clear cut center: a point from which everything emanates. The notion of a green capitol may sound like a stretch, a flight of fantasy, or an idea of the moment, but let me assure you, this is not an idea to be taken lightly. Detroit needs a makeover; no dispute. But it needs to be based on something that no one else is doing. Here lies an opportunity born out of necessity. Here lies a chance for Detroit to re-invent itself; for staking out a claim on its future. What I offer has been in the making for over 40 years, and has been looking for a place to manifest for over two decades. The process began at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California in 1968, with a self discovery of a long hidden talent, inspired by The New York World's Fair of 1939, but never acted upon. This has led me on a path that culminates in my being able to present to you now, a method by which I think Detroit can climb to greater heights. These are important issues that demand a thoughtful response, for what I offer is a new sense of direction. Obviously, no small matter. I am cognizant of the fact that the City is engaged in major downsizing. A sad negative that might turn out to be a positive. However, I will need a response. I need to be able to gauge sentiment and openness for change, and to what extent will it go to achieve it. Entries are now being considered for spots in the exhibition to show multiple works by two serious local photographers. The juried selection process will place significant emphasis on the social commentary and meaning of the images, as expressed by both the images and thoughtful artist statements. (For reference, artists might consider the “Social Realism” as practiced by photographers in the 1930s – but in our case, we’re also looking for humor and irony depicted about our current situation in USA and SE Michigan!) Photographers submitting work must reside in Wayne or Washtenaw County. Entry fee: $10 per entry. Submission must be made using USPS mail only (emailed submissions will not be considered), or in person at Art & Ideas (15095 Northville Rd., Plymouth, MI 48170). Each submission must include the following: 1. An artist’s statement that explains the social commentary made in the images submitted. 2. The artist’s resume. 3. One CD containing 10 to 20 images in JPEG format (at least 1 megabyte file size – width of ~5”). (If sending multiple images, you could group images into series of common themes.) 4. A list of images from the CD, including the size of the printed versions. 5. A non-refundable check for $10 made out to Art & Ideas LLC. 6. This note-doodling becomes a physical representation of our minds at work processing data and a uniquely wonderful instance of image and text coming into simultaneous existence as two manifestations of one thing. To explore these note-doodles and focus, we will create an environment of speakers and note-takers through a series of lectures and lecture-performances at The Lot in Detroit, MI. The program will feature (approx) 12 lecturers and will cover a variety of subjects: potential topics include art theory, food histories, and Elvis impersonations. Each lecture/performance will run for about 10 minutes with some being shorter and some being slightly longer. The price of admission for guests to attend the event will be only that they take notes in provided notebooks. I am producing "Art Hell Mutts" to be sold as sculpture with custom made stands. We want to do these shoots over in Canada. Ideally a Fri. and Sat. night stay over would be perfect. There will be a comfortable cottage on Lake Erie to stay in ...5 bedrooms. We just did one of these a couple of weeks ago with excellant success. I am an internationally collected artist refining my craft since graduation from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts in 1975. The MMP Future Filmmakers Night will showcase local shorts 15 minutes or less by high school students, middle school students, or those in youth groups with film programs. It is a night to celebrate and encourage the future filmmakers of Michigan. The Mitten Movie Project is actively seeking submissions from Michigan filmmakers 18 years old or below, or shorts that were made when the filmmaker was age 18 or below (no tweaking!).
