Taiko drumming is a dynamic art, involving not only music and choreography, but a fair degree of physicality as well. You may have seen groups like Kodo or Yamato and thought that taiko drumming is beyond your ability. Believe it or not, just about anybody can learn and enjoy taiko drumming. In Japan, children start learning as young as three and often continue into their seventies! Metro Detroit finally has a place to learn this exciting art form. Brian and Mayumi Sole are the instructors and spent 2 years studying taiko intensively at the Asano Foundation for Taiko Culture and Research in Ishikawa, Japan. <![CDATA[Three friends forming a cover band. We are not a working band right now but our plan is to play out once or twice a month, starting this summer. We have a web site, with nothing on it yet. As we begin to play out, we will maintain a site with fresh multimedia content. Just not right now. We practice every week in Auburn Hills. We are 29-35 years old, so we would prefer somebody at least within a few years on either side of that. Somebody local would be great, within 10-20 miles of Auburn Hills, so we can actually hang out beyond practice sometimes. Having a personality that we can relate to is at least as important to us as vocal ability, if not more so. Experience is not required as long as you have a professional attitude and understand that a band consists of more than one person. We are looking for somebody who has a day job and transportation. We will be doing this for fun and a little money on the side, not to make a living. We have a couple beers while we practice, but overall we are not 420 friendly. We would like to blend your song ideas into the mix, but we aren't planning any major departures from the style we've been working on. You shouldn't expect a lot classic rock standards, uncharted indie rock, nor heavy metal. Just high energy semi-modern rock, with just a few change ups thrown in for variety (classic rock, country, 80s, whatever). We are open to originals later on, but for now we will be focusing on covers. <![CDATA[Archaic Revival is an original Symphonic Power Metal band based out of Livonia, MI. The band was formed in 2007, with an album released at the end of that year. Our major influences are mostly European, which consist of Nightwish, Within Temptation, Leaves Eyes, Therion, Iron Maiden, and Dream Theater, among others. We currently play about 70% originals and the rest covers. We are in the process of writing new music for our next album and would like to find someone who will contribute to the writing process. You'd be one of seven bands to play about an hour each. As far as I know, this genre is called "Baroque Pop" or Chamber Pop <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baroque_pop" rel="nofollow">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baroque_pop</a> One of the few examples I can think of is The Divine Comedy <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEixi67WjTA" rel="nofollow">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEixi67WjTA</a> Some other examples of this sort of setup might be Dave Matthew's Band... <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mIWg9Ei_rI" rel="nofollow">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mIWg9Ei_rI</a> The Beatles' albums would be considered baroque pop (think Eleanor Rigby) <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxyJLxV0_-8" rel="nofollow">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxyJLxV0_-8</a> I'd hope one day we could have a group maybe including a violinist, (violist?), cellist, flute and/or clarinet player, french horn and/or euphonium player, and oboe (which I could play if I'm not playing piano)... other instruments that could be utilized may be mandolin, trumpet, bassoon, tuba, etc. - think concert and symphonic bands and orchestras playing well-arranged "pop" songwriting.
