<![CDATA[Things YOU can do: → Letting the other driver out in traffic, keeps them going & not just sitting there idling. Don’t stop in the middle of the road to let passengers out of your car. You just made all of traffic stop for you, and idle wasting gas. Park. This is even posted on pumps. Please pull forward. Not only at pumps – everywhere it avoids others having driving around you. Driving the lights avoids braking slowing down or stopped traffic. And really does it make any sense to go flying up to be stopped by the next light? Before you start your car anywhere, LOOK! If there are people behind you or cars; you know you’re not going until it clears, why idle? Is it going to make them move faster for you? Nope. It’s just going to waste your gas money. → Public outings/concerts/plays/venues/fairs….we all go to places like these, try taking a bus to just to save, not to mention the gas and exiting hassle. And when you drive – don’t sit in lot after or before, car on partying/listening to radio. You can do that, just turn the engine off. Your car radio will work w/ just the key turned over. And when they are over –is there any reason to rush to your car to sit in a traffic jam? Make a point at end to waste 10-15 minutes BEFORE even going to your car to allow an easier exit. How? Wait till it ends, visit restroom, sales booths, walk a longer exit out, etc. → Make a goal on short trips to use another form of transportation w/ lesser or no fuel. We have so many -bike, scooter, motorcycle, feet, skates, skateboard, go cart, golf cart, ATV- Better even still once a week, make it a goal not to drive using autos as you normally would. → Gas gums up, use all you have before refilling. If your at ¾ tank and don’t need it, don’t buy it, even if it dropped a cent or two. Because if it dropped, and it keeps dropping—how DID you save??? Learn, know and do check oil, fluids, tires, filters, etc. The better you take care of your car, the better gas MPG you’ll get. → Why do we see two police officers sitting by roadside, chatting it up? This one offends me more than most, because I, you and me, pay for that gas. Tax money. And why do firemen take the actual fire trucks w/ the crew to parks to workout? Why not walk there and back? That’s a workout too. When I see this it really bothers me, 1) again my taxes paid for their fuel, but more 2) what if that vehicle is NEEDED on a call? 3)If it’s a space issue we all can fit in one vehicle, hey—use your own gas. → So many websites on the net list the cheapest fuel, use them!– but then don’t go to the station wasting 1/8 tank idling in line to get ¾. Learn what the CAFÉ (net search it) standards are… our technology has so far exceeded standards from the 1980’s- why haven’t our cars? Really why? Two excellent choices to read (and not at all boring) Robert Zubrin’s Energy Victory; and Jay Hake’s A Declaration of Energy Independence. Net search GM’s Chevy Volt? 232 MPG! And the Nissan Leaf….Shouldn’t we be making ALL cars this way? All. Have you sent the manufacturer an email telling them so? Their sites are really easy to pull up from any search engine. → Lots of places we should be turning off the car, and we just aren’t. Loading and unloading, dropping off malls-librarys-grocery-banks (park!, don’t circle the lot or wait out front w/ engine running), funeral processions. Places whose business deals w/ service of autos, should keep a copies on their counters or give you suggestions on how to better your MPG. Now, THAT would be CUSTOMER SERVICE. You could always print 10-15 copies, and leave at the pump each time you get gas. In a parking lot, don’t circle looking for something 3 spots closer, just park. A twenty second walk, won’t kill you-but it will waste your gas. → Merge driving. The windshield really is there for you to look out and ahead of you. So, watch for that city bus up ahead; then merge. Just don’t get stuck behind it. Really, truly I saw this - 4 cars stuck behind boarding bus; in 4 lane intersection, NOW YOU KNOW LIGHTS CHANGE AT INTERSECTIONS, and yes, it changed in rush hour traffic…and sadly; yes, that fourth car sped up to make it thru the light, but……no one in all four directions could move because of those four cars behind the bus for two light changes. It was about a 200 car backup that sat for about 6 minutes, because four drivers did not merge around a bus. Wow. →Why do you use toll roads? Do you really need to get there 15 minutes faster, and pay toll and pay gas for it? How much difference will that time really make? It will ONLY matter, if there’s an accident on toll road, and then ..to get aid to you. → CL has a rideshare section, use it. Even if you only accomplish a rideshare one day a week, that adds up. → Thirty (30) minutes I watched a dozer cut and load a side dump truck at a jobsite. I know it took 30 minutes because that’s how long it took me to walk past. 30 minutes. The truck ran the whole time, w/ no driver!!!! WHY? Cut OTR warm up times. If you do ½ hour do 15 minutes. And don’t idle nonused trucks or thru lunch hours and down times. If you have to wait on a pace car at construction zones, turn your car off. Flaggers are there for reasons, why idle? Accept, recognize and help yourself; your not getting past any faster than the pace car. Treat your work vehicle like it is your own money, because it is. Do you care? I mean after all it’s not your gas, right??? Wrong. You pay w/ higher prices at pump for your own auto, on your electric, AND that’s probably your next raise your wasting. Because HOW will your employer be able to afford to give you a raise, if their fuel bill stays sky high? →You can also save at home, because where does your electricity come from? Many sources, coal, oil, hydro, water, wind, solar….so, get the CFC bulbs- you can buy them cheaper at dollar stores. Unplug EVERYTHING except stove/fridge/water heater, and plug them in as you go. Relying on a power strip really isn’t that much cheaper, and only helps when you forget. Your cell phone doesn’t need to charge overnight, usually 1-3 hours will do. If you did the math, on overcharging the cell phones we have; well with 30 million cell phones..….you’d find we are paying to waste a LOT of electricity. → Use the semi’s to your advantage when highway driving. Find one that is going slightly faster and stay behind, but don’t tailgate; because if you can’t see his mirrors he can’t see you! His tailwind sucks you along increasing your MPG, plus he has a CB and generally knows about speed traps; so, IF he slows down……. Think of it as the best win win gas situation. And if you are a decent driver doing this, when he merges and you merge, spot for him. How? Flicker your lights on off tells him he has a safe space to pull back over when he signals. → Are you still using plastic bags? We use about 37 million (yep million) barrels of crude oil a year just to make them. Invest in or recycle cloth or canvas. Old backpacks are a great recycle item! If you sew, even patch together old clothes for this purpose. You save oil and get extra use from an item you paid for! → When waiting at the bus stop w/ kids, shut the car off. When doing this 5X (and you know it’s 10) a week at 2 minutes each – you just wasted 20 minutes of gas. Would you start your car, let it run for 20 minutes and walk away? When you do this daily it equals an hour a week. Would you start your car, let it run for an hour and walk away? →Funny, I have only seen this continually at state schools for the deaf/blind. Why? (Because they depend more on their senses.) But, ALL school buses should be shut off AT school delivery AM & pickup PM, while loading/unloading on school grounds. It’s safer and cheaper. →Monitor your driving and gas habits to recognize when and where you waste. Every driving situation and driver’s needs change. (Ex. If you know you can’t get past your friend/neighbor in a car w/out a 5 minute chat, turn the engine off when you encounter them.) → Don’t hold up traffic, go right on red. Are you aware there are situations you can also go left on red? It’s mostly in downtown areas, but when you go from a one way street to another one way street with traffic that you turn LEFT into. → Ask coworkers to join you at lunch, or if you can bring them back something – stops multiple cars on the road; and sharing is good! Look for stores to price match like Lowe’s/Home Depot, Wally World. Ask what their policy is. Use the price match. It’s one stop shopping, not running from store to store. Get together w/ neighbors, friends, relatives and combine trips. The distance from their house to yours is cheaper than two cars on the road going the same place. And it’s a way to stay in touch. → Buying locally .. stop shopping the net unless you truly are shut in and can’t get out. It isn’t a bargain, when fuel goes up to ship it to you. Then fuel goes up for everyone. We utilize that ship to me, so much that it is not a convenience anymore. IT’S killing us at the gas pump. One of the best examples I see every time I shop: VO5 Shampoo/Conditioner is made in Canada …White Rain Shampoo/Conditioner is made in USA…yet, I always see a cart w/ literally the same product this is how you paid for freight to truck it here, & sent your purchase dollar out of country—and got gas to go up all at the same time. Another example of shooting yourself in the foot. Take the time to read labels, buy American. → Planning a road trip? Watch prices across the country. You can do this on any of the gas buddy sites online. →A gas hose, is just like a straw – it achieves it’s own level. Think about that the next time you have a drink. Should I fill up or get few gallons at a time? Before/after I pump my gas, what happens? Use your eyes to see. →Make a copy for your car, and have kids look for these. Great learning project. Look at in a few days and be amazed. If you’re a student – this is a great “A” project idea to build from, for science or history. → Turn your engine off it you are waiting on a train. Really, WHERE are you going in the 5/10 minute wait? (only the Kitt car’d make it over that train—and then welll……that’s in the movies..) Skip the drive up ATM. Use the walkup. Or turn engine off at drive up. We have drive thru for everything, funeral homes (net search it), pharmacys, banks, ATM, and the biggie –fast food; and it is costing us. Park and walk in..consider it exercise, or socialization, but get out of that idling line that is 4/5/6 cars deep. And when you use fast food, and- your order’s not ready…why do you pull forward and wait some more? Or into a designated spot? Better yet, why did they create a spot??? → I didn’t get this at first until I saw it w/ my own eyes. Don’t litter. It SO belongs here. Your litter is picked up two ways, either employees or volunteers DRIVE out to the littered road and bag it up, then leave it bundled for a trash crew to come along. Your litter is creating two more vehicles on the road just to clean up something that you could have thrown away in a trash can. They use fuel to get to the litter site, and if it is the employee your taxes pay for that fuel. Again, you shot yourself in the foot. And, I’d bet that your next stop has a trash can right smack in front of it because trash cans are everywhere. Gas stations, car washes, stores, malls, your house, parks, etc…. → Trucks, cars, semis that are parked overnight should be off, and not idling at roadside rests and truckstops. One of our states actually NOW has made this illegal……interesting….what would happen if 15 other of the decent weather year round states followed suit? → If you have grazing animals, let them eat the grass, and skip the lawnmower. And if they go thru your lawn, got neighbors?? The rite of passage…learning to drive at 16. How many accidents would be stopped if your kids wait until 17? And we both know a year’s worth of gas would be saved. And if your 16 year old’s not ready, don’t push. And then the teen gets the license and the first thing to do is ? Cruising. Yep, we all need to learn to drive-even if we don’t regularly; but at some point we need to know how, but the cruising part of it?? You should set limits. If your teen wants to go every Friday, make it every other Friday. Oh by all means, be mean; make them pay for the gas. (nothing will teach the value faster.) Are you paying the posted pump price? Most of us, jump out, pay, shove the pump in there and wait for the magical number we are putting in to register on the screen. But calibration in pumps do vary, and get off. How do you know at $3/ gallon, you got that? Randomly, test the pump, run a gallon – did it read the posted price? If not, move and report that pump. Go online to the state’s department of weights and measures. →Don’t forget to send this to all your email friends by using copy/paste links will and do expire. ]]>
