The Position: The Highly effective and reliable particulate controls are essential to high plant availability. Plant derates, which are costly, are often the only way to prevent opacity violations with today’s equipment. Increasingly stringent particulate/ opacity limits are placing greater demands on the particulate controls, while, at the same time power generators are adding solids into the flue gas to capture gaseous pollutants. All these factors combine to create a need for cost-effective particulate control upgrades, ultra-low emitting systems for new plants, and robust systems for all news. Job Function: - Be or become a national expert in particulate controls - Assist members with difficult particulate control problems – those not solved by consultants – based on exposure to the full array of existing equipment and past issues, newly emerging technologies, EPRI’s ESP performance prediction model, and a wide network of specialists in power generation companies, OEMs, consultants, aftermarket suppliers, etc. - Develop and implement a particulate control RD&D strategy to help members maintain their existing fleet, prefer for new requirements, and meet very stringent emission limits for any new plants or those that may eventually be retrofit with CO2 controls - Manage ongoing projects to evaluate new technologies and address new issues (e.g., impacts on particulate emissions due to increased unburned carbon, injected activated carbon, or injected alkali for SO2/SO3 control. Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) seeks a Senior Project Manager for the Energy Storage department.  This new EPRI Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for detailed thermodynamic and mechanical engineering work directly related to EPRI’s Two Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) demonstration projects (one using a below ground air storage and one using an above ground air storage system). Intermittent resource integration is a crucial need facing the industry. Because additional pumped hydro is difficult (or impossible) to site and very expensive, Compressed air energy storage is the only viable alternative to store large quantity of energy. EPRI is a recognized leader in CAES, and the EPRI BoD has supported the launch of a large CAES demonstration project. This support coupled with the industry need for bulk energy storage, will require collaborative research for CAES design, value evaluation, and operation. In addition, the initiative will spawn numerous site evaluations for both OH (Pipe) storage and UG (Salt mine and porous rock). This will include the Board –supported CAES Demonstration project. Especially important is the execution of the collaborative CAES project. The collaborative project will develop many of the fundamental concepts required to effectively incorporate CAES as a resources option for energy planners and executives. This will include a CAES reference guide which will provide the technical fundamentals, design and financial information, and operation experienced gleaned from the first generation sites. The demonstration is designed to address three energy storage challenges; <ul> <li> To successfully demonstrate a bulk energy storage plant that is less than half the capital cost of pumped hydro. </li> <li> To successfully demonstrate a bulk energy storage plant that is cost-effective with at least twice as long a discharge time as other (non-pumped hydro) storage systems (e.g., sodium sulfur or lead acid batteries storage systems). </li> <li> To successfully demonstrate a bulk energy storage plant that can store large amounts of off-peak wind renewable energy and deliver that energy to the grid for peak shaving, load management, power regulation and frequency regulation duty. </li> </ul> CAES Plant Design Option Trade-Off Analyses A set of CAES plant preliminary design trade-off analyses will be conducted to determine the “best” CAES plant design option to use, which produces the lowest present value, life cycle cost of a CAES plant using one or more of the CAES geologic formations identified above. The design trade-off analyses will include evaluating how alternative future cost projections for on/off peak electricity prices (and fuel prices) impact the choice of the best overall integrated CAES plant design. Thermodynamic turbomachinery analyses will also be conducted to determine the “best” design and operating conditions for the CAES plant that match the geologic pressure and flow characteristics identified above . This work will include the determination of the mass flow rates, temperature levels, and pressure levels for the turbomachinery compressors and expanders, as well as the determination of the upper and lower bounds for the pressure and mass flow rates used in the storage reservoir. Ideal Candidate: <ul> <li> Experience with the compressed air energy storage technology and be familiar with how to run thermodynamic software (e.g., Thermoflow) that calculates the mass and energy balance of expander and compressor equipment when used for simple cycle and/or combined cycle power generation equipment </li> <li> Must be proficient in performing thermodynamic analyses of combustion turbine / compressor equipment related to electric utility generation plants </li> <li> Specialized experience or expertise in the compressed air energy storage technology is a plus, but not required </li> <li> Specialized skills in using MatLab and/or thermodynamic systems software would also be very useful </li> <li> Understanding of the gas storage business is a plus </li> </ul> Education Level and Years of Experience:    <ul> <li> Minimum BS, and MS in Mechanical Engineering.
