Roy Lichtenstein was born October 27, 1923, in New York City. In 1939, he studied under Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League in New York, and the following year under Hoyt L. Sherman at the School of Fine Arts at Ohio State University, Columbus. He served in the army from 1943 to 1946, after which he resumed his studies and was hired as an instructor. He obtained an M.F.A. in 1949. In 1951, the Carlebach Gallery, New York, organized a solo exhibition of his semi-abstract paintings of the old West. Shortly thereafter, the artist moved to Cleveland, where he continued painting while working as an engineering draftsman to support his growing family.

From 1957 to 1960, Lichtenstein obtained a teaching position at the State University of New York, Oswego. By then, he had begun to include loosely drawn cartoon characters in his increasingly abstract canvases. From 1960 to 1963, he lived in New Jersey while teaching at Douglass College, a division of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He met artists such as Jim Dine, Allan Kaprow, Claes Oldenburg, Lucas Samaras, George Segal, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Robert Whitman, who were all experimenting with different kinds of art based on everyday life. In 1961, he began to make paintings consisting exclusively of comic-strip figures, and introduced his Benday-dot grounds, lettering, and balloons; he also started cropping images from advertisements. From 1964 and into the next decade, he successively depicted stylized landscapes, consumer-product packaging, adaptations of paintings by famous artists, geometric elements from Art Deco design (in the Modern series), parodies of the Abstract Expressionists’ style (in the Brushstrokes series), and explosions. They all underlined the contradictions of representing three dimensions on a flat surface.

In the early 1970s, he explored this formal question further with his abstract Mirrors and Entablatures series. Beginning in 1974 and up to the 1980s, he probed another long-standing issue: the concept of artistic style. All his series of works played with the characteristics of well-known 20th-century art movements. Lichtenstein continued to question the role of style in consumer culture in his 1990s series of Interiors, which included images of his own works as decorative elements. In his attempt to fully grasp and expose how the forms, materials, and methods of production have shaped the images of Western society, the artist has also explored other mediums such as polychromatic ceramic, aluminum, brass, and serigraphs.

From 1962, the Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, held regular exhibitions of the artist’s work. Lichtenstein participated in the Venice Biennale in 1966, and was honored with solo exhibitions in 1967 and 1968 at the Pasadena Art Museum and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, respectively. The artist was the subject of a major retrospective at the Guggenheim in 1994, three years before his death September 30, 1997.

Image Size: 32"x24"
About the Artist: Alexander "Sandy" Calder was born into a family of renowned artists who encouraged him to create from a very young age. As a boy, he had his own workshop where he made toys for himself and his sister. He received a degree in mechanical engineering in 1919 but soon after decided to pursue a career as an artist. Calder attended classes at the Art Students League in New York from 1923 to 1926, supporting himself by working as an illustrator. In 1926 Calder arrived in Paris where he developed his Cirque Calder,a work of performance art employing small-scale circus figures he sculpted from wire, wood, cloth, and other materials. Through these elaborate performances, Calder met members of the Parisian avant-garde. At the same time, Calder sculpted three-dimensional figurative works using continuous lengths of wire, which critics described as drawings in space. He explored ways to sculpt volume without mass and to captured the essence of his subject through an economy of line and articulated movement. Calder's wire works then became increasingly gestural, implying motion. By the end of 1930, this direction yielded his first purely abstract sculptures. After translating drawing into three dimensions, Calder envisioned putting paintings into motion. He developed constructions of abstract shapes that can shift and change the composition as the elements respond to air currents. These sculptures of wire and sheet metal (or other materials) are called "mobiles." A mobile laid flat exists only as a skeleton, a reminder of its possibilities, but when suspended it seems to come alive. Calder also developed "stabiles," static sculptures that suggest volume in multiple flat planes, as well as standing mobiles, in which a mobile is balanced on top of a stabile. Calder furthered his work by developing a monumental scale. His later objects were huge sculptures of arching lines and graceful abstract shapes that now inhabit public plazas worldwide. Calder was an artist of great originality who defined volume without mass and incorporated movement and time in art. His inventions redefined certain basic principles of sculpture and have established him as the most innovative sculptor of the twentieth century.

This is a 100% wool Afgani Bukhara pile carpet, and is very finely woven on a wool foundation. It measures 6'7" X 10'6", is about 50 years old, and is in excellent condition. Its color motif includes a rich red, black, and tan as dominant colors with hints of rose pink, light blue, and yellow. It has a medallion woven in the center which is regal but not too busy.

This carpet is unique because it is signed GTF in 4 places on border, which could stand for the initials of the weaver who wove it or the atelier in which it was woven.

This carpet would look great in a traditional, classic setting, as well as in a setting with collectible folk art. It is a unique, one of a kind piece that needs a new home.

This is an approximately century old Irish box made of pounded brass laid over wood. It is in very good condition for its age and it looks like a golden box with an ivy leaf motif embossed in the brass. It measures 22.25" x 15" x 18.5". It can be used to store firewood in a modern or traditional room, and it functions as a piece of art in itself. It can also be used as a decorative and functional box for storing liquor, photo albums, or even as a side table. It has a wooden interior frame with security mechanism on the lid which prevents it from slamming shut when lifted up.

This piece is stunning and really stands out in a room. A Must-See!
Beautiful Cross of San Damiano for a truly Catholic home! It measures 10-3/4” tall and 7-1/4” across the length of Christ’s arms, with colorful depictions.

One day, God spoke to St. Francis through the crucifix in the chapel of San Damiano, just outside the walls of Assisi, Italy, and said, "Francis, rebuild my church." This was a literal request to repair the chapel which had fallen into ruin, but is interpreted metaphorically as a divine command to renew the life of the church as the people of God.

St. Francis had a very generous nature. Without hesitation, upon hearing God's command, he took a piece of silk from his father's warehouse, sold it, and used the money to buy stones to repair the chapel.

His father, angered by this apparent act of thievery, took Francis to court. This estrangement led to Francis giving up his inheritance and devoting himself completely to God.

The crucifix became known as the San Damiano Cross, and is considered an icon because it contains images of people who participate in its meaning. In addition to the crucified Christ, these include the major witnesses: Mary, the mother of Jesus; St. John, the "beloved disciple;" Mary Magdalene; Mary, mother of James, and the centurion who proclaimed, "Truly this is the son of God." There also are three minor witnesses: the two Roman soldiers who pierced Jesus' side and offered him a sponge soaked in vinegar, and an onlooker.

The original crucifix now hangs in the Basilica of Santa Chiara (St. Clare) in Assisi.
