<![CDATA[Budgets are a key element in the success of any project. The two problems that show up the most often are either, a group that does not plan a budget, or a band that plans an unrealistic budget and rushes, cutting corners. Every time you cut a corner or ignore an element, you are bringing the viability, sustainability, potential longevity and success rate down. The larger labels put together budgets and spending caps, and designate and allocate where funds will go. These budgets are made up by accountants and producers that charge a small fortune to create them. The preproduction budgeting is one of the most popular services that we provide for artists at Protectomatic, and for worlds cheaper. We always begin working on a budget with the artist that they can apply to a recording, whether they work with me as a producer, Protectomatic or if they have an already existing label or producer. We budget for artists, labels and managers to help them designate and clearly define either the money that has to be raised or to justify the money that is going to be spent, down to the last penny. Just as in any other business that needs to be funded, it is important to create a business plan that explains and elaborates on each cost, explains why the money is needed for that item and describes why using that item, person, studio is good for the project. When we create budgets for recordings under the Freedom Solutions Recording Plan, I work with the artist over a series of weeks to discuss the exact details of not only the recording itself, but the project as a whole. Most people would not invest into recording a CD alone. This is not a very safe investment. However, showing recording as part of a full project and explaining how the project will go from start to finish, adds reassurance. As post production, marketing, promotion, branding and release considerations are added, this creates a plan that shows a realistic and attainable chance for success. It's a good idea to stay clear of talking about how the album will "change music", "become Legendary", "be the best thing released this year" and anything else that is arrogant, conceited and pompous. Explaining how different avenues of success are possible through realistic approaches that will allow the artist to reach obtainable goals and self-sufficient success, highlights a mature and professional approach that will be taken much more seriously. Show the process from front to back and discuss the marketing encapsulation of you as an artist and the recording as a whole. This will allow the donor or investor to see the vision in a detailed way that will create a sense of confidence, and in turn, will bring funding of some type. Having details on the people that you are working with on the project in this plan/budget can also help to justify funding. Having the right engineer, the right studio and the right producer is important, and if you are attempting to put out something that is going to stand on it's own in the industry, you are going to have to use the right team.
