Does your family have room for one or two more members? Do you need a jogging partner, a language coach, an additional basketball player or an artist? Have you got the welcoming spirit of hospitality to take a 15-18 year old foreigner into your home and treat him or her as you would your own child?

We will be getting profiles of up to 60 high school exchange students (20 so far) to place in Tennessee for the 2008-09 school year. These students come from over 50 nations, icluding such diverse places as Vietnam and Brazil, and from a variety of backgrounds and interests. Many are athletes, cooks, musicians, etc. All are good students.
<br>
<br>
<br>
We need your help to bring them here. The later it gets the more difficult it is to find schools with available room for them. All public schools and some private schools have a limit (usually 5, sometimes less) to the number of exchange students they can accept. Also, if you start the process now, you will have more time of direct corespondence to pave the way before your student arrives.

Want to improve your understanding of another language, another culture before you travel there? Do you enjoy the company of interesting people? Do you need another runner, soccer player, pianist or cook in your family? And most importantly, do you like teenagers?
<br>
<br>
If so, you may enjoy hosting an international exchange student, or two.
<br>
<br>
We are currently looking for homes and families for foreign exchange students who are hoping to attend high schools here in the upcoming 2008-09 school year!
<br>
<br>
We are already receiving profiles, and now is the best time to get started on the paperwork for that. If your paperwork (including the criminal background check) is done first, you can see the profiles of the kids as they come in, so you will be able to make a more informed decision as to who you feel will best fit in with your family. Also, our schools all limit the number of exchange students they can accept. Last year I found many families who were willing to host, but were too late to get their students accepted into the schools.
<br>
<br>
There is no such thing as a typical host family. Most of the families I've placed kids with so far have been empty-nesters, so you do not need to have teenagers already in the home, though it's nice if you do. Even single people and families with young children are hosting here in Middle Tennessee, and are doing quite well. Your willingness to accept a foreign student into your home with warmth and love and support is more important than your demographics.
<br>
<br>
You may phone or e-mail me AT ANY HOUR to learn more about the program. The phone is off and recharging at night, but it still takes messages. However, it does not record incomming phone numbers when it is off, so PLEASE clearly recite your phone number at least twice if you do leave a message.

<br>
General Information:
<br>
<br>
1. International Student Exchange is a non-profit organization, approved by the US Department of State and fully listed by the Council on Standards of International Educational Travel (www.csiet.org).
<br>
<br>
2. Host families are volunteer and do not receive payment. However, students must have a minimum of $300 per month of spending money coming to them from home. This is for all expenses beyond the room, board, and reasonable travel that is expected to be provided by the volunteer host families.
<br>
<br>
3. Empty-nesters, single people and families with young children are also encouraged to apply. If there is concern that a teenager would be bored in your home without siblings of a comparable age, we will quite happily place two students of the same gender but with different native tongues in one home.
<br>
<br>
4. ISE students are good students and must be able to speak English with a minimum SLEP score of 45. No guarantees on grammar, but hey, the hope of improving English skills is one of the main reasons they apply for the exchange program.
<br>
<br>
5. Students are fully insured.
<br>
<br>
6. Students may share a bedroom with another youth of the same gender and within 5 years in age, but each must always have his or her own bed.
<br>
<br>
7. As dictated by the US Department of State, students travel on a J-1 visa, usually arrive (very roughly) about 5 days before school starts and depart about 5 after the last day of school.
<br>
<br>
8. Students are 15-18 years old, and are thoroughly checked out and recommended by their foreign agencies before they are accepted into the program. They are good students, in good health, who have agreed to follow a set of rules that includes guidelines established by the host family. Also, each student has agreed to attend church with the host family, whatever church that may be.
<br>
<br>
9. The Area Representative will provide orientation for both the host family and the student, and is to be available to the host family, student and school for support and mediation whenever necessary. Monthly meetings must take place (half by phone, half face-to-face, e-mail doesn't count) with your Area Representative. We are encouraged to make the bi-monthly face-to-face meeting a pot-luck/covered-dish party/picnic to give the kids and host families time to socialize with one another and enjoy a fuller inter-cultural experience.
<br>
<br>
10. The website www.iseusa.com is run from our headquarters in New York, and further information about the organization can be obtained there. The other website, www.isesouthatlantic.org is from our branch office in Raleigh and has just the bare-bones profiles of students who may be available for placement in Tennessee, North and South Carolina and Kentucky.

I just got some new listings for a couple more exchange students who need host families. One is a boy from Sweeden who has been playing golf, ice-hockey and soccer for many years. I do have another golfer and soccer star who is available only in Kentucky. There is an adorable Korean girl who is very much into world peace and international affairs. She would probably LOVE to be involved in Model UN. She is also an experienced pianist and has won some awards in Art. And just today I received the profile of a 16 year old German girl who loves being around little kids and is also in to horseback riding, vaulting, tennis... and all her grades are either A's or A+'s, not even an A- in the lot.

Did you know that the high school exchange student programs were created by our governemnt after WWII to improve our image worldwide? The programs still exist because they work, and there has never been a time that we NEED this more than now.
<br>
<br>
Please do not dismiss this wonderfully enriching opportunity because you have no children, are single, or have only small children. Some of the best placements of all are with families with small children. Two or more teenagers under the same roof is a whole different dynamic than one teenager and a few small children who all love eachother and can express it much more freely than.... You know what I mean, both ways can work beautifully.

<br>
It's all about connections and life-long friendships with kids who may, in the coming years, become leaders in their home nations. We work with students from at least 56 nations including Spain, Vietnam, Tailand, Holland, Chile, The Czech Republic, Belgium, South Korea, Serbia, China, Brazil, Germany...
<br>
<br>
Currently we need volunteer host families for students arriving in August for the 2008-09 school year. We also have a few students who come for only one semester.
<br>
<br>
<br>
We have student profiles for you to view which include introductory letters and a list of enjoyed activities like soccer, hockey, basketball, horseback riding, musical hobbies and aspirations, cooking, etc.
<br>
<br>
We also need area representatives in the outlying areas of Tennessee and Kentucky who enjoy working with people. The host families are volunteers, but area reps do make some money for placing and supervising students. An area rep who finds seven host families, gets to go on the training trip to Athens Greece next November. Fourteen, and you can bring a family member.

<br>
International Student Exchange is a non-profit organization formed in accordance with the guidelines of the US Department of State and fully listed with the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel. (see www.csiet.org).
<br>
<br>
Our students are between 15 to 18 years old, come from over 50 different nations, get good grades, speak English, and want to come to America to get to know us better. Most are athletes. Many are musicians. Their application process is fairly arduous and many are not accepted. They come with insurance and with a minimum of $300 a month spending money to cover expenses beyond the room, board and reasonable transportation expected to be provided by the volunteer host family. Most will attend the public high school for which the host family is zoned, though we do have some with extra money for private schools.
<br>
<br>
As a host family, you would fill out a host family application which is nine pages long, but no more difficult than the pages of a second or third grade spelling workbook. The application includes pictures, an introductory letter, and an outline of family rules and expectations. The original of this application ultimately ends up in the hands of your chosen exchange student and his or her family. This becomes their introduction to you, and from that point you can communicate prior to your student's arrival, and thus build a foundation for your relationship before (hopefully long before) the student arrives. This is your chance to let them know if they should bring their riding boots, ballet slippers, a winter coat or their favorite cooking spices that might not be available here.
<br>
<br>
You do not need to have a high school age student already in your home. You do not even need to have other children in your home. Some of our students are very good with little ones and will even enjoy being in a family with small children. If you are concerned that one high schooler would be lonely or bored in your home, we will happily place two of the same gender but different native tongues in your home. They can even share a room.
<br>
<br>
Host families and students will have the support of a local ISE area representative to provide advice, orientation and back-up throughout the school year. There is a Regional Advisor here in the Nashville area, a superb Regional Manager in Raleigh, and then the main offices are full of wonderful people in New York. You will enjoy getting to know some of these people as well as your exchange student, his or her family, other students and host families in the area.

Against All Odds is the title of the April 17-19 concerts at the Laura Turner Concert Hall in Nashville, TN.
<br>
The evenings will feature the work of Hindemith, Weill and Korngold, three composers, who, according to press notes, "came to the U.S. to escape the chilly winds of political turmoil in Europe."
<br>
The concerts will boast the Nashville Symphony conducted by John Mauceri. Actress-singer Ute Lemper, seen on Broadway in the Tony-winning revival of Chicago, is scheduled to perform Weill and Brecht's Seven Deadly Sins. Hindemith's "Prelude from When Lilacs Last in the Door-Yard Bloom'd" and Korngold's "Symphony in F-sharp, Op. 40" are also on the bill.
<br>
Show times are April 17 at 7 PM and April 18 and 19 at 8 PM.
<br>
Ute Lemper made her Broadway debut in the revival of Kander and Ebb's Chicago, and she is known throughout the world for her unique solo concerts that feature an eclectic array of material. She was named Billboard Crossover Artist of 1993-94, and her theatre credits feature roles in Peter Pan, Cabaret and Blue Angel. Lemper's many solo discs include "Ute Lemper Sings Kurt Weill," "Illusions," "Punishing Kiss," "Berlin Cabaret Songs" and "City of Strangers." A recent CD/DVD release is titled "Blood & Feathers."
<br>
The Laura Turner Concert Hall is located within the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, One Symphony Place in Nashville, TN.

I am a teacher at a Metro middle school and am organizing our talent show. Part of the show will be a fashion show. We're having a spring dance, so I want the fashion show to have "looks" that would be appropriate for the dance: modest yet fashionable clothing that young adolescents would enjoy. We need male and female looks. We'll also need accessories.
<br>
<br>
I need someone who has connections with a local store/boutique that would be willing to allow us to borrow their clothes for the show. I have selected very responsible and trustworthy models and will be supervising them very closely during the show. I will personally insure that the clothes return to you undamaged. PLEASE contact me if you can help or know someone who might be interested in helping us.

I loved the opening when the 4 Cartwrights would come riding up on those beautiful horses.
<br>
<br>
I've never gotten over it, I love the horses, the log home (The Pondersa), the beautiful scenery, all of it. Is there anyone else out there who is intrigued by the Old West? Wagon trains, and rifles that's my bag.
<br>
<br>
Maybe there are people living in Nashville now who used to live out there. That would be very interesting to get to know them.
<br>
<br>
Besides watching westerns on TV, I love to read novels about the old west. Larry McMurtry, Louis L'Amour are my favorite authors.
<br>
<br>
If there are people out there who would love to get together with like minded people, please e-mail me and we'll see what we can come up with. Couples, singles, male or female. All you need is to share a love for yesteryear and the wild west.
<br>
<br>
The possibilities are endless. We could get together for cookouts and build bonfires and sing under the stars. We could discuss our favorite movies or novels. We could even go out west together to a dude ranch. Remember City Slickers.
