I want craigslist users to critique my material and say "YES Mike...DO IT...DO IT NOW!!! or "NO MIKE... your an idiot!!! stay in North Carolina and work for the cable company the rest of your life...ya big putz!" or you could be more original and use your own words. Either way, it'll be nice to hear from ya

www.myspace.com/mikepopeguitarman

www.garageband.com/artist/thedifferentials

I'm a songwriter who's looking to put together a band over the internet. I've had some radio airplay in Canada and I regularly write songs for television.
I write rock, country rock, ballads and a little blues. You can be in a great band and never have to leave your house. No driving to rehearsals! If you can sing really well and are a little computer savvy, that's all you need.
I intend to put together a band who can each record their own parts in their own homes or studios and then send them on to the next musician for their contribution. We’ll figure out what is the best software to use once the band is members finalized. When we’ve got some tracks down and sounding right, we’ll put them up on I-tunes. I also have a couple of musical contacts that I will call upon when the time is right.
So, if you’re dependable and talented, this could be a lot of fun. So, drop me a line and a sample of your playing and let’s get started!
In search of a drummer for a rock n roll hybrid. Looking to put together a band and would prefer a member opposed to a hired gun. You know them bands that got the right look and the right gear but there missing the SONGS? We'll were kinda like that except we got the SONGS. We draw a lot of our inspiration from East Coast artists like Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith Group, the Ramones, Lou Reed, etc, ya know we like it a little gritty sometimes. But we all hail from the Midwest where good radio is tougher to come by so we're all firmly planted in good old fashioned pop music as well.

You read a lot of ads about how "we got connections" or "we know the right people". And all I have to say to that is "Come on this is Nashville, everybody knows somebody" and if they don't yet they will soon. So do yourself a favor at the end of the day play in the sort of band and with the sort of people that you like or that you believe in. If you think that might be us then send us a link and we'll return the favor and let you know a little more about where we're headed. Peace Y'all.

If By "making it" you mean become the next big thing in Mainstream , Major label country or popular music today, yes it's to late. You're OLD. They want KIDS, 14 years old, so they can have a CD out by 16 0r 17.

If by "making it" you mean break into the successful songwriting community... it's unlikely. The town is on lockdown right now. You better be really great and have top ten quality songs, about 50 of them all ready to go. What are the chances that you wouldn't have been heard by now if you did ? Not very likely. There is still the "old boy network" and they don't write with many people outside the circle. Now there is a "good ol girls" network as well! Mayo, Lindsley, a very few others). Plus you've got a whole crap load of fantastic newly established writers in their mid thirties and forties like Bobby Pinson, Chris Wallin. If you can win over even one of these people and get co-writes, you may have a shot. It's the ODDS you have to keep in mind. The odds are they will embrace a new Belmont student first or a young newly signed artist on a major label, not a 50 plus year old person. And older people don't have the energy and patience to hang in nightspots for years on end to be heard, so it's very tough.

You also can't simultaneously hope for older people to have success in music and then want to date 19 year old strippers. You have to participate in the whole Oprah thing, the concept of "Universal Conciseness". If more people in society demand that artists be older it would happen, but what's the likely hood of that? You have to create a Conciseness of "Older" as "better". A few corporations have latched on to the boomer market, like the makers of Dove products and a few others. Some are trying to tap into the "Boomer" market with music but nobody is buying the music. They buy Josh Groban records.

The person would have to be older but still SEXY. Sex is what sells entertainment, even the slightest suggestion of it. I know one woman in town who could sell millions of records, but she's not even in the GAME much less trying to make it happen. Imagine a female singer who amalgamates Alison Krauss/Emmylou roots esthetics with Mariah Carey type modern day R&B, and still looks sexy and youthful. Sounds like a winner right? Nope, they aren't even in the game. They would have to compete with several "older" women who have the "older chick singer" multi genre thing on lockdown, including established recording artists like Faith, Shania, etc. You have to marry or blow your way into a situation for an older women to "make it". Older men have it easier, since we already have a "Universal consciousness" of older men as "sexy" in our society.

If by "making it" you're asking, can you record a CD, promote yourself on the net, get paid to perform and travel, gain national attention and maybe even win major awards like a Grammy, the answer to all of that is YES. As long as you don't project some expectation of becoming some 50 year old plus superstar hoping to be on the cover of People magazine, yes, you can do that.

What's so fantastic for ALL of us is this is America, and that is what the USA is, the land of the free and brave. You are free to dream, and if you're brave enough to take the knocks, yes you can achieve pretty much anything within REASON of our society's Universal Consciousness

Absolutely true! The older guys know how to do it and do it right the first time. When you are 25 or 30, you are still pretending to do it. There is a difference between pretty and quality. I have begun working on the album.

I am only looking for players who are conversant in my influences. There are many great players out there and I have worked with them. I read a response suggesting you go to Austin instead which is a great place for the performing musician. I do agree with the response to the point that the music business chews up and spits out a lot of folks, not just necesarily Nashville. But you know what, so does the sports business and the movie business and just about any other type of entertainment business. The main thing is, do something, go somewhere, give it a shot.

True story, at 18 years of age a guy from Indiana comes to Nashville with no gig, no money and only the friend who came to Nashville from Indiana with him. They spend their first several nights sleeping under a park bench in Centiniel Park. He starts making friends in the town and is soon sofa surfing. He is pushing his little cassette tape that he made back in Indiana up and down music row without any takers. He is persistent and ultimately the folks at Sony / Tree offer him a writing deal (1972, $25 per week). He writes a song that is cut by Three Dog Night and goes top 40. He gets a raise to $250 a week. His demos get released by Epic simply because they were so cheap to make. The album and the follow up go nowhere. He gets dropped by Epic and Tree and hits the road for the next 4-5 years playing solo acoustic gigs at colleges; you know the kind in the cafeteria during lunch, etc. He keeps writing and gigging during this period and one song he writes in this period gets cut 27 years later by Eric Clapton and BB King. New wave hits and he gets a deal with MCA who position him as the American answer to Elvis Costello. Two MCA records stiff and he gets dropped again. Starts playing guitar for Nick Lowe who is having some sucess at the time as well as playing with a legendary guitarist Ry Cooder based in LA. Geffen decides that they can make him a hit and sign him. He puts out 3 Geffen records that go no where and he gets dropped again, his drug and alcohol use escalates, he has a baby daughter and then his wife commits suicide. He gets sober moves to Nashville gets signed by A&M and has a run with them of 5 succesful releases. His material gets covered by other artists with one of the songs going top ten for Bonnie Raitt. He leaves A&M for Capitol and puts out 2 more albulms. He then becomes a free agent and starts footing the bill on his recordings and then licensing them to labels, where he remains a susccesful recording and touring artist to this day. His name......John Hiatt.

This story demonstrates a couple things; this is a really tough business that takes a toll and the only chance anyone has is to take a risk and stay persistent.

I would like to find 2 or 3 people that thinks this would be as fun as I think and would like to give it a try.

I want to put together an acoustic group. This is not going to be a stepping stone to getting you discovered and on your way to become the next big thing. It may not even get you enough money to fill your gas tank after a gig. But, with the right people, it would be a lot of fun and that is what I am after.

I play rhythm guitar, bass, percussion and feel that my strength is in my vocals. I would love to hear from people that can play multiple things, as well. Sax or violin/fiddle would be great.

I love to hear multiple=part vocal harmonies and would like to be a strong part of this project. As for songs...I am thinking cover songs that everyone knows and enjoys, but if you want to work up some originals and get them out there, I'm more than cool with that, too. I am thinking a wide range of songs to do. The fun part about this is taking songs that people normally do not associate with being acoustic and playing them, that way. It is a freakin' blast to do that.
I was hoping you could clarify your post. It doesn't make any sense.

First off, you give the impression that only nice people are "locals", or only the "locals are "nice people? That's very odd, being that you also state you're from out of town, and most of the people you've played with are from "out of town", and assholes? None of it adds up to mean anything. What are you trying to say, if anything?

Nashville is a national level city, so people come here to "make it" from ALL OVER the USA and the world. So what's your point? Most people moved here from somewhere else. People from Nashville are nice and assholes, and people from anywhere else are nice and assholes. Again what's the point? MOST people are ass holes anyway so what are you attempting to say?

In the "bygone days" of "Country", most of the artists signed were PREDOMINANITLY from the other southern states or the Midwest, but NEVER ALLWAYS from any one region or state. And most people who actually grow up as "locals" never become a national acts. Widen that to Statewide, just people from Tennessee, it gets a better numbers wise. But being "from" Nashville is UNUASUAL, not the norm. Even the people "from here" aren't from here, they are from surrounding towns and suburbs, like Goodlesville, Franklin, all the hundreds of small surrounding towns and Countys.

People are the same everywhere, there are just different regional styles. People from "Nashville" or "the South" aren't any "nicer" or people from out of town "assholes" than people from somewhere else.

When you wake up from your stupor could you let us in on what you are trying to say?

Okay, I have an album of unfinished songs in the vein of George Michael/Elton John with an country/alt-pop edge, and I'm seeking a musical collaborator (Lyrics are done, so mainly this is to flesh out music ideas). I spent 8 months writing with this incredibly talented piano/guitarist singer, who couldn't write lyrics to save his life, but had music ideas constantly coming out of him. He was also great at shaping my rawer ones (I play guitar, piano, drums but am untrained in reading music, etc) and even writing together... The music we were focused on was SHAMELESS Country-Pop, designed specifically for the purpose of placement. It was challenging, and we got some really amazing results for as many duds as we had to also write through... it was fun though.

We were putting together a really killer pop demo to shop (or for him to record if all else failed, you'll understand when you hear his voice on the 4 songs we did manage to basically track), anyway, they are all missing proper studio recording, and so I'm hoping to pick this project back up this summer to wrap up with someone who has 1.) a home-studio and experience with drum programming (so we can save $$), 2.) is tuned influences-wise into the following derivatives in some form or another- George Michael, Prince, Paul Westerberg, Butch Walker, Linda Perry, Loretta Lynn, Nikki Sixx, James Michael, and a host of others), and 3.) has their shit together in the way of employment, handles partying, etc (this project ended because my writing partner had to move back to NY to live with his folks and go to rehab). I don't care what anyone does to get inspired to write, I just ask you have a handle on whatever pushes you creatively, so we can max this and actually attain a finished product.

I have long-time contacts in the industry (I'll explain more when you email back), so connections aren't my concern (although if you also have background with getting POP-country songs, specifically, placed, this would be a nice added bonus). Anyway, please email back with a couple demos or a myspace page where I can hear some of your writing style, and I again am happy to provide upon request demos from this specific project, but also from some other projects I have written/recorded on/with so you get a sense of my songwriting style before we'd sit to talk further. Please potentially have ideally 1-night a week available in your schedule to work on this, also possibly with the ability to do maybe one open-mic every 3 weeks or so to test some of these songs, but that's not a requirement. I'm just trying one more time to find the right writer to finish this up, and hopefully lead to some future collaborations...

I've been here in Nashville now for about 2 years, and since that time, most of the assholes I've played with were from other states that have moved here seeking... God knows what. I'm now making a pretty good living playing music, which has been a dream for me all of my life. So, with that - thank you Nashville for being everything that I have come to expect and more.

God Bless you all.

I'm seeking a producer to produce an original album to be sold independently. I'm looking for a producer who preferably has their own studio, is a multi-instrumentalist(or at least can play the guitar and work with virtual instruments, etc.) and be able to help write the instrumentation, can do the final mixing and pitch correction. Basically...the whole she-bang. This would all be work for hire. I'm going for a sound that is very Roxette meets Bryan Adams, or if you need a modern example...Lifehouse meets Hilary Duff. ha. i am happy to have BMI working for me. i have approx $20k to $30k direct deposited to my bank account in quarterly increments and they havent stiffed me in almost 20 years. i can't speak for ASCAP or SESAC but i hear they are good too.

as for the nashville union, i pay my dues and when i play the Opry, some other union's guys move my equipment for me. and another union feeds me. they get me about 40 opry gigs, commercial gigs, and sessions a year. scale is not going to make you rich, but it fills in some gaps in my income, especially in the winter. im fortunate--ive been around a while, but i know some guys who hang out at the hall who get twice as many gigs as i get. i have no gripe with the union as all i know is i will get my money paid in dues back in one gig.

the union has insurance, a 401k, and a pesnion plan--not a good one, but ask Bob Moore if its working for him. it offers a bit of security, but like most of the music industry, some things have been trimmed back.

i suspect many of you guys are indies and working hard at getting somewhere in music. i wish you the best. but the union may not be for you. a simple rule of thumb--if you use the union as a network and have some real publishing money coming in, ASCAP, BMI, and the local here have a lot to offer. if you are still scratching for a living, use the money for rent or a doctor bill. when you start working the bigger venues, join the union. the union doesnt promise you a living--it provides those of us who already make a living in music with security and networking.

and hang out at the hall--the old-timers are nice and they will tell some great stories.
