Do you have space in your heart and home for one more soul?

International Student Exchange is a non-profit organization formed in accordance with the guidelines of the US Department of State and fully listed with the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel. (see www.csiet.org).

Our students are between 15 to 18 years old, come from over 50 different nations, get good grades, speak English, and want to come to America to get to know us better. Most are athletes. Many are musicians. Their application process is fairly arduous and many are not accepted. They come with insurance and with a minimum of $300 a month spending money to cover expenses beyond the room, board and reasonable transportation expected to be provided by the volunteer host family. Most will attend the public high school for which the host family is zoned, though we do have some with extra money for private schools.

As a host family, you would fill out a host family application which is nine pages long, but no more difficult than the pages of a second or third grade spelling workbook. The application includes pictures, an introductory letter, and an outline of family rules and expectations. The original of this application ultimately ends up in the hands of your chosen exchange student and his or her family. This becomes their introduction to you, and from that point you can communicate prior to your student's arrival, and thus build a foundation for your relationship before (hopefully long before) the student arrives. This is your chance to let them know if they should bring their riding boots, ballet slippers, a winter coat or their favorite cooking spices that might not be available here.

You do not need to have a high school age student already in your home. You do not even need to have other children in your home. Some of our students are very good with little ones and will even enjoy being in a family with small children. If you are concerned that one high schooler would be lonely or bored in your home, we will happily place two of the same gender but different native tongues in your home. They can even share a room.

Host families and students will have the support of a local ISE area representative to provide advice, orientation, and back-up throughout the school year. There is a Regional Advisor here in the Nashville area, a superb Regional Manager in Raleigh, and then the main offices are full of wonderful people in New York. You will enjoy getting to know some of these people as well as your exchange student, his or her family, other students and host families in the area.

I like my job because of all the fun, interesting and intelligent people with whom I get to work.

Please join us.

Feel free to call or e-mail at any hour with questions. The phone takes messages 24/7 but does not record phone numbers when it is off, so please be sure to repeat your phone number clearly.

~Pamela

--
Pamela
Tennessee Regional Advisor
International Student Exchange
(615) 568-8556
http://www.iseusa.com
http://www.isesouthatlantic.org

Here are some sample pics of students who may be available for placement in this area.

ShinMyung from Korea Ngan from Vietnam

Nick from Korea Anja from Germany

I just got some new listings for a couple more exchange students who need host families. There is an adorable Korean girl who is very much into world peace and international affairs. She would probably LOVE to be involved in Model UN. She is also an experienced pianist and has won some awards in Art. We are soon expecting another Korean girl on our list who is very musical, plays the viola and other instruments. Earlier this week we received the profile of a 16 year old German girl who loves being around little kids and is also into horseback riding, vaulting, tennis and volleyball... and all her grades are either A's or A+'s, not even an A- in the lot. This week we also should be receiving the profile of a French girl of African ancestry.

Please feel free to call me and ask about our programs. We do have outbound programs for students who would like to study overseas too.

Pamela
(615) 568-8556
Regional Advisor
International Student Exchange
www.iseusa.com
www.isesouthatlantic.org

Lawyer hex: "These pictures represent just a sample of the students who may or may not be available for placement in your area."

Shin Myung and Anja
Have you got the welcoming spirit of hospitality to take a 15-18 year old foreigner into your home and treat him or her as you would your own child?

We will be getting profiles of up to 60 high school exchange students (20 so far) to place in Tennessee for the 2008-09 school year. American Childcare on murfreesboro road is not treating kids the way they should. Anyone who has their child at American Child Care on Murfreesboro road should read this. I DO NOT recommend this daycare to any family who wants their child to progress. My child is 3 years old and was down to 1 pull-up a day and almost fully potty trained. Now he has regressed back to needing 5 pull-ups a day due to the teacher not wanting to take the time to potty train. His behavior has changed immensely to aggression that he has never had nor expressed. There is no curriculum. I am trying to teach my child age-appropriate curriculum that I would only hope be enhanced at school. I want him to be adequately prepared for pre-k, which is just a year away. It is basically an all day babysitter with no curriculum or structure.

In regards to the question I posted here ealier, the last time I posted it (a couple months ago) I did get one response from a woman who said she had enough to deal with with her own kids. That led me to share the following, which I think bears repeating:

My parents birthed three children, my elder brother, me fourteen months after, and my younger brother 18 months after that. About two years after my elder brother's death at age 11, my parents bravely adopted a sibling group, girls ages 8 and 6, boy age 4. The adopted kids came with some enormous baggage. Their father had killed their mom and they'd been in in foster care for two years, stable foster care, but loveless.

By the time I was a senior in high school the adopted kids were getting in fairly regular trouble with the law (except for the youngest girl whose behavior was by far the worst of the three, but she never got caught). My dad was on the local (small town in the northwest) Planning and Zoning Commission at the time and our private family business was public gossip fodder. My parents did everything they could to try to teach these kids right from wrong; the kids continually made poor decisions, and blamed my parents. My youngest sister was later diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, but her subtly hateful tendencies were already needling away at the very heart of several members of the family, maybe even all of us. There was A LOT of stress in the home.

One day an announcement was made from the pulpit that there was a 17 year old female exchange student from Japan who was a member of our church and was requesting a host family from within the congregation for her senior year in high school here. Three families stepped forward. We had a piano (a necessity since her parents required that she practice three hours a day), a spare bed, and a girl her age (me) so we got her.

I'm sure people must have thought my parents were NUTS to bring one more kid into the house at a time when there was already so much stress. I don't think any of us contributed much by way of chores and my mother is still a devout from-scratch cook, even to the point of grinding her own wheat for bread, making noodles, keeping a formidable organic garden...

SO into this whirlwind comes Mari, with her perpetually steaming sticky-rice pot, her poor English skills, her odd habit of eating Walla-Walla sweet onions whole and adorned in nothing but Kikkoman... and her three hours a day of Chopin... and her quiet, peaceful demeanor. Mari brought a sense of peace and healing into our home. She brought us through a very troubled time, and my mother to this day will sometimes wistfully say, "I miss Mari" especially when she hears Chopin's piano music.

Now, I will admit that not all exchange student experiences are that out-of-this-world, fabulously, enrichingly, Wonderful. Certainly ALL are learning experiences for all involved. Only one in ten are problematic enough that the kid has to be moved to a new home or, more rarely still, sent packing back to where they came from (I haven't seen it happen yet, but I'm only going into my second year.) MOST are good experiences for the whole family where everyone learns a bit about another culture, picks up at least a bit of another language, and makes international friendships that will last a lifetime.

By the way, all of my siblings, except for the narcissistic one, have grown into responsible, hardworking, honest adults and terrific parents. Mari got a full-ride piano scholarship, extended her visa, married a red-headed dairy farmer from Oregon and has two, now adult, daughters. Her parents and some of her siblings have also emigrated to the US.

I encourage people to prayerfully consider hosting an exchange student, and prayerfully consider which student they choose. I believe that this program will enrich the lives of all involved, indeed, at it's best, IT HAS THE POWER TO TURN THE COURSE OF THE WORLD through the friendships that are developed and the experiences learned HERE by children who well may become the leaders of tomorrow in nations like Serbia, Vietnam, China, Venezuela and more than 50 others.

Now, who wouldn't want to be a part of that?

--
Pamela
Tennessee Regional Advisor
International Student Exchange
(615) 568-8556
http://www.iseusa.com
http://www.isesouthatlantic.org
Last year when we were trying to find host families for our exchange students we really didn't find many families interested in hosting until days before school started, and a few after school started. Of the many who applied that late, only one family managed to get a student, and they had wanted two. It wasn't because the other families didn't qualify or that we ran out of students. We still had plenty of terrific students "left over" and the families were wonderful. The problem was the schools couldn't take them that late; they'd either filled their quota or they wanted more advance warning. I hadn't stated posting here until I had become quite anxious about those "left overs"... 'round about late July, but every time I posted, I got at least one good response. So I figured if I posted here early, we'd get it done early, and not have the panic come July.

I've been posting now since January and I've had one person call with questions, one spam, and one offer of fundraising advice. I've not placed any kids yet. So far one of my reps has placed one student in Knoxville; that's it.

SO... the question is this:

WHY?

Is it the economy? I mean, if you've been thinking about hosting but have not made a move toward applying, what is holding you back? I really want to know. If I know what the problem is, then maybe I can address it, but right now I'm in the dark, and I'm worried.

Please write me and let me know, or call.

Pamela
615/568-8556
