Wanting to make a difference in my community I volunteered to start an after school musical theatre company. Not only am I gaining experince, but I am also trying to provide kids with a positive alternative to just hanging out on the streets. The kids are composed of 6 through 12th graders ranging from 11 to 17 years of age. Our original musicals provide a unique opportunity for special education students, honor students, teachers, and administrators from different schools to come together and work on the same platform. I am trying to show them that hard work pays off, so I would love to reward them by having an known actor come by and encourage their efforts, speak to them about the business, and maybe even give them some acting tips.

THE STREET GYPSIES
195
He decided that he had time to go for a good haircut at Hank
Jackson’s apartment over on Leland over the Time Out bar near
Clifton Street. He kept what he had on and rushed out of the door
to head to Hank’s place, which was only a few minutes walk
away. When he arrived on the third floor of the old hotel building
where Hank lived, he knocked on the door several times----there
was no answer and he felt disappointed because Hank was almost
always home because he had a bad leg and walked with a cane
and had diabetes and didn’t get out much and rarely drank for
health reasons. Jack was going down the stairwell and, as luck
would have it on one of his better days in quite sometime, he ran
into Hank coming up the stairs. “Hey, Hank… I need one,
baby…hook me up!” Jack said, smiling broadly as he looked
down the stairwell at Hank who was at the bottom of the stairs,
pausing to catch his breath. “I’ll be glad when they fix that
damned elevator” he said with a sigh after taking another deep
breath. Hank started again from the bottom of the stairs with his
cane to walk up toward Jack. “You need one…one
what?…shit…I need me some damn ice water, that’s what I need”
Hank said with a little gasp between words. “Hank….a
haircut…what else did you think I was talkin’ about?…a hair cut,
man…you gonna do that for me, huh?” Jack asked hopefully.
“Man…I got to rest for a minute before I come up there” Hank
said, continuing to gasp. “Okay…okay…go ahead and rest…you
gonna do that?” Jack asked again. “Yea, man…damn…why you
keep askin’ me?…take it easy…I ain’t goin’ nowhere” Hank said
again with a bit of annoyance. “You didn’t say nothin’ when I
asked you the first time, Hank so, I asked you again, man…damn”
Jack said with a little annoyance of his own. “Alright…come on”
Hank said as he arrived at the top of the stairs and walked past
Jack toward his apartment door halfway down the hallway. Jack
followed him and after Hank unlocked his door, they walked in
and Jack started walking around anxiously in the one-and-a-half
room apartment. Hank plopped down on the old sofa almost in the
middle of the room. “Sit down, Jack…you ain’t gonna grow no
taller” Hank said in the manner that he always did of speaking in
one-line dialogue. “Okay” Jack said compliantly. “What you need
a haircut for, Jack?…so you can look good when they lock you up
and take ya’ picture for stealin’ everything that ain’t tied down?”
Hank said wryly with a light chuckle. “Now, Hank…that’s

196
cold…is that any way to treat a payin’ customer, huh?” Jack
answered with a note of sarcasm. “Payin?…Payin?…you gonna
pay me?.....I’ll be damned…I think you owe me for about two
haircuts already, don’t you?” Hank said with a tone of surprise
and sarcasm of his own. “Hank…don’t forget… I got you high
twice…you remember you wanted me to get you high about three
months ago and I did it twice and you said forget about what I
owed you for the haircuts…you remember that?” Jack explained.
Hank paused with silence and furrowed his forehead while he
tried to recall what Jack was talking about. “I said that?….I don’t
remember that” Hank replied innocently. “”That’s ‘cause you got
good and high and you forgot everything after that…I helped you
get home ‘cause we was hangin’ out by the lot next to the buildin’
right here…I had to help your heavy ass up them stairs ‘cause the
elevator was broke…you was drunk…remember?” Jack went on.
“Naw, naw, naw…I don’t remember that” Hank said with
assurance. “Aw, come on, Hank!” Jack said with exasperation.
“Hey…well…just forget about the two haircuts, then and just pay
me now…you gonna’ pay me, right?” Hank asked to be reassured.
“Yea…I’m gonna’ pay you” Jack said with annoyance. “Come on,
then, Hank…let’s get started….I got a hot date in about two
hours” Jack said in a lighter tone. Hank didn’t say anything but,
walked over to the old dresser near his closet and started rambling
in one of the drawers and pulled out his electric hair clippers and a
few attachments and started to clean the blades. He took a couple
of minutes and he soon had begun cutting Jack’s hair.
Jack rarely got his hair cut because he rarely spared the money
to have it done. Most of his money went to buying drinks or
occasionally T’s and Blues. This was the new synthetic drug that
was two prescription pills crushed in water, mixed and shot up
like heroin with a similar high. Jack rarely got high in this manner
and had started about a year ago to engage in this new fad. It
proved to be dangerous because early-on, he had observed some
of the people he was getting high with have seizures. The seizures
he had seen were violent and whoever was around that person
having the seizure would usually try to help them by making sure
that they did not choke by swallowing their tongue. They held the
tongue down by sticking a comb in their mouths. Jack had
engaged in this way of getting high perhaps, a half-dozen times in
that time without having a seizure. He had decided that the ones
THE STREET GYPSIES
197
who were having the seizures were being greedy like fiends often
were; abusing the drugs by taking too much at one time. That was
the reason, he surmised, that they were having those seizures. He
was careful not to use too much of the mixture to avoid having a
seizure himself. As Hank was cutting Jack’s hair, they engaged in
their usual good-natured exchange of debates, arguments and put-downs.
Finally, Hank was done and Jack looked in the dresser mirror
at his new haircut and he liked the way it looked and he thanked
Hank. Before he could dig into his pocket to pay him, Hank said
“Thank me by payin’ me…that’s the kinda’ thanks I want…know
what I mean, jelly bean…hahahaha” he chuckled. Jack paid him
and gave him a two-dollar tip. “You did a good job, brotha’
Hank…there you go” Jack said as he handed him several dollar
bills. “Damn, Jack…you tippin’ and everything…right on…this
chick must be hot, man…to make you spend your drinkin’ money
on a haircut…hahahaha” Hank teased. “Hey, man…I don’t just
drink…a little mackin’ ain’t never hurt, either…dig it” Jack
answered spiritedly. Jack bounced down the stairwell of the hotel
building on his way back to his place.
He knew that the time was very near for him to call Tina and
he was trying to tell himself that it was all no big deal. But, the
gradual rise of excitement inside was telling him different. He was
trying to behave naturally, and he was on the outside but, inside
he could sense a curious kind of merriment in his soul; a strange
kind of good feeling. He did not want to let it overtake him. These
kinds of feelings were so foreign to him and he felt awkward to
even acknowledge their existence. Yet, he needed to feel them so
badly. It was like a drink of water to one who had thirsted for an
eternity; like peace in the middle of hell; like everything good he
had never known. There was something spiritual about this
woman and their connection. He felt it. And although he could not
commit any notion of certainty to it, there was a sense of
righteousness about it all. Jack arrived back at his place and as he
pushed the unlocked door forward, he was anxious about the time
as he focused on his clock-radio sitting on his dresser. 4:18pm, it
said and he felt relieved that it was not later. He lie down across
the bed and let his mind drift. He closed his eyes and he could feel
the tenderness of Tina surrounding him. He could remember what
her kiss tasted like. He could hear the sweet sound of her distinct

198
feminine voice in his head. He could see her pretty face, so
natural, pure and fresh; the sweet smell of her; her silky hair
brushing across his face; her warm body underneath him; her
loose and care-free sense of humor; the warmth of her spirit; it
had all captivated his senses. He suddenly awoke from his semi-sleep,
semi-daydream that seemed to last much longer than the
few minutes it did. He looked over at the clock-radio to see
4:25pm.He turned the radio on. He got up from the bed and went
into the bathroom and had a long and relaxing shower. He
carefully cleaned his nails and took extra care to brush his teeth
and rinse with mouthwash. He used lotion on his skin and dabbed
on a little cologne. He groomed himself better than he had in as
long as he could remember. The happy beat of the soul tunes that
played on his radio kept his spirits high. He was surprised at how
feeling good mentally could make him feel so good physically----
it all seemed so strange to him. He had not felt good mentally, it
seemed, ever. Not since he was young enough to be blissfully
ignorant of the pitfalls in life. Jack finished his grooming and
spread his clothes out on the bed. He dressed and looked at
himself in the mirror, primping as he did when he thought he had
a reason to. He was satisfied with his appearance. He had gone
through extra care to select his outfit for tonight. He noticed that
the haircut had made a big difference by making him look much
more neat and respectable. He was glad that he had gotten it done.
He looked at the clock-radio again. It was a few minutes past
5pm. Finally, he put his money in his pocket and walked out,
locked his door and went down stairs to the lobby to a pay phone.
He called Tina. The phone rang several times before Tina
picked up “Hello” her familiar voice spoke out, pleasantly
piercing Jack’s senses. “Hey, baby….it’s me” Jack said with
uncharacteristic gentleness. “Hey, Jack…I’ve been waiting for
your call, honey…how are you?” Tina replied in a soft, sultry
tone. “I’m cool…you gettin’ ready?” Jack asked. “Baby, I’ve been
ready” Tina purred with a scintillating sexiness in her voice. “I
hope so, baby…I hope so…I’m almost ready….I want you to
meet me on the platform as close to 7:30 as possible, okay?….just
step off and we can talk while we wait for the next train…we’re
goin’ downtown for dinner then, for a stroll around
downtown….how’s that?” Jack said. “Sounds good to me but,
when I get off at the platform….all we’re gonna’ do is talk?” Tina
THE STREET GYPSIES
199
said, playfully hinting at the obvious. “Baby…you know how we
talk…we talk in different ways to each other….right?” Jack said
in his own sexy tone. “Yes we do…and I’d say we’ve been having
some very good talks lately…don’t you think?” Tina replied.
“You’d better stop talkin’ that way or you might get more than
you expect on that platform tonight” Jack hinted just as playfully.
“You think I care…it wouldn’t matter to me where it was” Tina
responded. “Okay…that’s it…stop…you’re gonna have me
standin’ at attention out here and I might have to go back home
and change…hahahaha” Jack laughed out loud. He could hear
Tina laughing on the phone along with him. “I could just see you
now with a big old wet spot in the front of your pants, trying to
get back home to change…just picturing that cracks me up,
Jack…hahahaha” Tina laughed. The laughing subsided, and when
it did, Jack could feel a kind of release from it. It felt as though
some kind of therapy had taken place and he barely noticed it. His
mood was serene and he wanted to savor this very moment
because it seemed so pure and innocent. “Ok, baby…get a move
on…I’ll be waitin’” Jack almost whispered. “See you around 7:30
on the platform, honey…byyyyeee” Tina said very sweetly.
Jack was aware that he had about two hours to kill before he
would be meeting Tina. He did not want to sit in his apartment
because he knew the anxiousness would drive him crazy. He
decided to go to his usual hang-out spot at the poolroom where he
seemed to end up on most days. It was uncanny the way that
seemed to happen, no matter what was happening on any given
day for Jack, he seemed to always end up there at around 5 or
6pm. He walked out of the front door of the Arms and walked at
an easy pace toward the poolroom. He decided, too that he would
not think about Tina and their date so much. But, would just hang
out for a while with any of his friends who happened to be around
the poolroom. His interaction with them would keep him occupied
and it would help him to relax before he met with Tina. He was
kind of annoyed with himself that he was thinking about using
diversions in this way. Why couldn’t he just act natural and not be
so full of anticipation?----he didn’t know. But, he needed to
compose himself, he thought. It was funny that he was thinking in
this way, because he knew that as soon as he met with Tina and
saw her, and began talking with her, he would feel relaxed right
away. It was not her that was making him think and feel the way

200
that he was right now because she accepted him completely and
he knew that. It was something in his mind. Something about how
he had been conditioned to reject others before they rejected him.
It was about how his father never seemed to embrace him or treat
him like a human being. It was about how he had landed on these
streets all on his own with this way of life and not knowing how it
all came to be. These thoughts vaguely ruminated deep in his
mind; always blurred and in pieces; never in whole or complete
thoughts. But, they manifested themselves in these feelings he was
having that he knew were unnatural. But they felt natural to him---
--feelings of guilt and shame that he could not understand where
they were coming from.
Jack walked past the Aragon entrance then, the A&W
restaurant. As he walked along Lawrence Avenue in front of the
long stretch of the poolroom window, he peered inside
momentarily to try to see if he saw any of his friends. He came to
the entrance and swung open the door and walked in. He didn’t
see any of them and he immediately walked over to his favorite

Local writer, Glen Latham Aims to Satisfy as Author of “The Street Gypsies”
Former Chicago resident writes exhilarating urban adventure.

ISBN:-13: 9780595459223 (paperback): gritty, humorous, romantic
The "Street Gypsies" as described by the author, is about the urban underclass of street characters who lived in Chicago's Uptown community during the 1970s. They were a society of free spirits. They were sometimes unsavory but, almost always, colorful characters who were street hustlers surviving on the streets by wit and whim; invariably, getting caught-up in the addictive nature of the lifestyle. The culture was probably a manifestation of the times. During those years, there was rampant unemployment and inflation in America. It was also a time of social unrest and rebellion that spawned a number of radical groups. There was an anti-establishment climate that was fueled by the drop-out drug culture that carried over with it's hippie influences from the 1960s. Add to that the elements of the sexual revolution, the civil rights and women's movements. It was the glory days of Rock and R&B. All of this was the foundation for the mind-set that prevailed within this Street Gypsy culture. Survival was made an art form by these resourceful and spirited characters.

Would you meet for a cup of coffee to talk about CREATIVITY and BEAUTY?

I am a graduate student in psychology (and a musician and a writer myself) and am doing my thesis/capstone project on the subjects of creativity and beauty.

I am seeking creative types from all fields, including visual artists, musicians, writers, poets, designers, and ideators to interview on these subjects.

My goal, through these interviews, is to gain a deeper insight into the mysterious and elusive creative process, as seen through the eyes of artists. I am looking to get inside the heads of creators to see what motivates and inspires them and how the consciousness of each artist is expressed in their creativity. I also will be exploring the relationship of artists to beauty in these interviews.

I'd love to ask you some questions about your creative process and how you take in the world through your senses.

The Interview: 45 minutes in a cafe of your choice. I can come to your neighborhood.

Compensation: A chance to talk about creativity and beauty for a while. All caffeinated and non-caffeinated drinks on me. Also, I will be happy to forward to you the findings from my interviews when I have completed the project. It hopefully will be the springboard for a bigger project I have in mind.
I have a roughly 3ft by 4ft canvas that I REALLY REALLY want to get rid of.
I painted the entire canvas a cerulean blue hue in acrylic paint to cover the orginal painting that was someone's else idea for a project that fell apart.

I am willing to do a personal painting on the canvas for cheap, but I would like to get at least half of the money upfront so I will not get stuck with the canvas again. Also who ever is interested in the painting will either pick it up or pay for the shipping costs, which are not cheap.

Enjoy, and be kind while giving a critique, we are only high school students. | I am working on a graphic memoir which is coming out in spring 2009 with one of the top US publishers. It will be released in hardcover first, then paperback. I am looking to hire a talented artist with a keen eye for color to provide the color for my book on the computer. The book runs 253 pages and is due in August 2008. I am just at the drawing stage now, so I will submit drawings to you piecemeal over the next few months. But due to the tight deadline, you will have to work fast.
Note: This project requires an extensive knowledge of Illustrator and/or Photoshop, because I may want the drawings to involve shading, depth, etc.--not just flat comic-book colors. But I'd need to see a visual of your style to get a sense of what will work best. And of course, I will send you a jpeg of my drawing style, as well.
I will pay for the overall project as opposed to doing a per page rate. I can't pay an astronomical sum, so perhaps this work will be done by a student, but your work will have high visibility in the top bookstores in the US and abroad. In addition, if things go well, I will recommend you to other artists and help you break into the publishing industry if that is your wish (I am a successful, published magazine writer. This is my first book). If you are interested in taking this job, I will need to see samples of your work. We can talk, first, about the kind of color I am interested in--but I also value your input, since this is not my forte. | The BAG Gallery at Brooklyn Artists Gym gives both emerging and established artists and curators the opportunity to show their work on their own terms. (introductory to advanced)
Robert Zeller
Saturdays - June 7th - August 9th
10:00 - 1:00pm and/or 2:00 - 5:00pm

A.M. Session $375 Tuition (3hrs a week) (3 CEUs)
P.M. Session $425 = $375 Tuition + $50 Model Fee (3hrs a week) (3 CEUs)
Both Sessions $775 = $725 Tuition + 50 Model Fee (6hrs a week) (6 CEUs)

A.M. Session:
Cast Drawing This class is not about "drawing statues." Cast drawing, when practiced academically, provides a means to improve radically one's drawing ability within a short period of time. Historically, great figurative draftsmen have utilized these methods that combined both perceptual and conceptual elements. This class fits within that tradition of High Realism.

P.M. Session:
Painting the Figure in Grisaille Utilizing the skills taught in the A.M. Session, the students will apply the same methods to working from a live model.

3 basic techniques will be taught:
"Wipe out method" wiping in the light mass of a painting by removing wet paint from a still-wet toned surface, with a rag or brush.
Chiascurro is adding/grouping a light mass via lead white oil paint in various opacity/thickness over a dry, dark background. This creates an incredible luminescence in the painting, when overpainted with colored oils.
10 value scale Students will learn to control a full range of values over a mid toned ground.
The following will be pursued over ten weeks: (1) Developing a quick and fluid accuracy utilizing perceptual ability. (2) Cultivate a conceptual sense of surface form (3) Learn control of a 10-step value scale (4) Develop an understanding of how the underpainting dictates the overpainting
In both sessions, Mr Zeller will demonstrate concepts for the group as well as provide individual instruction. Students will initially focus on accuracy of shapes, followed by a more conceptual "turning of form." Optional homework assignments will supplement the in-class exercises and explore a variety of drawing media.
PLEASE NOTE: You do not have to register for both sections. You may take the session(s) that best address the type of instruction you wish to receive.
The building is 24 hour access with elevator service Monday through Friday. The space is used to build large set pieces and puppet pieces, however we are not in production right now so we are using it as storage. From now through Jan 2009 you can pretty much consider it your own as we travel btwn now and then, stopping in occasionally to pick something up. This is a windowless space with ventilation. If you are interested it is $350 and we are showing it this Sunday after noon. Thanks! | New Black Rock office wants to be part of the friday stroll art displays.
