<![CDATA[There is a very sad but very REAL picture of Angel (pic #3) before she was rescued. This is a story of perseverence, passion and love - please read it to the end! This was written by one of our volunteers who was there through it all: It was Christmas day when I first saw Angel on this side of the Nassau Expressway. I was driving to the shelter to go to work and there she was, this small tan and white pit just standing there on the grass on the shoulder. We pulled over to try and get her, but as soon as she saw us she bolted, running down the highway at lightning speed. I knew better than to chase her. Too many dogs get hit by cars that way. We went back to look for her later after work with food and flashlights. There was a sanitation truck yard on the other side with a hole in the fence. We thought she might have snuck in there. We searched for an hour but could not find her. It was over a month later that I saw her again, this time RUNNING in the left lane with the cars down the highway. Again, knowing she was scared there was nothing I could do that wouldn’t make her bolt into traffic. When I got to work, I told Bobbi about the dog. She coincidently got a phone call earlier that day from someone saying they had seen the dog too and have been feeding her, but the dog was too scared to come close. She put me in contact with the person who called and we set up a feeding schedule. We all took shifts and days to go feed the dog hoping she would get used to us. I went back that night to look for her with some hamburgers from McDonalds. That is when I noticed the dog house on the side of the highway! Who had put this here for her? There must be another caretaker or someone dumped her but felt bad enough to leave a dog house...? It was full of blankets and had a bowl of water outside and an empty food dish. I leaned down to put the hamburgers in the dish and noticed the dog was in the house! She took one look at me and bolted again, running right past me almost on the highway. I backed away quickly and she froze on the shoulder. I left the food and got in my car. I waited a couple of seconds and saw her creep back. She looked at me longingly for a moment. I rolled down the window and called softly to her. She didnt respond. What a precarious situation! I didn’t want her to run towards the highway again so I left her to eat her hamburgers. I often went to feed her even when it wasn’t my turn hoping she would get used to me. But she was never in the dog house again and I often left the food in the dish. I kept in touch with the other two volunteers who often did see the dog but were not able to get close to her. Nights went by where the temps dipped into freezing, it snowed, we even had an ice storm,we had torrential rain... I lay awake thinking about her.. A couple of days later a blast email went out from another concerned citizen saying she saw the dog running down the highway again in the lane! This was too much! The next day we called Animal Care and Control and they came over to set a trap. We, Bobbi and the Strays, would take the dog when caught so she would not have to go to the kill shelter. I spread the word to everyone to stop feeding her so she would go for the bait in the trap. Sure enough we got word that she was caught! But then the devastating news that someone had released her! After canvassing the area we found it was the sanitation workers. They have been feeding her and gave her the house. They thought that she would be put to sleep if taken to the shelter so they let her go. A lot of people cared about this dog! But the dog was saavy to the trap and avoided it at all cost. We continued to feed her and try to socialize her. The turning point came when one of the sanitation workers' girlfriend who is a vet tech put a tranquilizer in her food. In her sleepy state, they were able to remove the embedded collar on the dog’s neck. After that the dog was happy and social and came up to strangers giving hugs and kisses! They were able to get her into the office at the garage at sanitation and called us to come pick up the dog. We went over on a Monday night and met the sanitation workers and volunteers who had been advocating for the dog's rescue and also feeding her and trying to rescue her. Everyone gathered around the small tan and white pit bull girl. She was around 35 lbs, filthy dirty from being outside for three months, and a sore on her neck where her collar was too tight. She came right up to me and gave me a hug and a kiss! We put her in the car and she rode with her head on my lap to the shelter. She was confused about where she was and what was happening but she was always very sweet. I set up a cage for her and she went in to lay on the blankets and beds. I stayed with her a long time, feeding her pieces of cheese. She was sad when I left, barking and crying. I think she must have been terribly lonely out there and now that she had company she didnt want to lose it. Two days later, one of the original rescue volunteers took her to the grooming salon where she was transformed into a glowing, sparkling clean beauty! Her whole color changed! She must feel so much better! It's been a week since Angel has been rescued and she is at our shelter. She is as sweet as ever but I can tell she is lonely. She clings to people when they come see her. She cuddles and gives hugs. Now all she needs is a forever home. And with all that she has been thru, she truly deserves one. I forgot my keys and went back inside to get them, and by the time I had come back outside the hamper was totally gone. The clothes included: many button down plaid shirts, at least 4 pairs of jeans, boxers, socks, workout shorts, and several band shirts. The clothes are all big sizes -- shirts all XL or XXL and jeans with 36 inch/38 inch waist and 34 inseam. These are the shirts I can specifically recall that were in the hamper: --light blue Art Brut/Modern Art... --yellow Buzzcocks/Orgasm Addict --khaki green Guided by Voices/My Kind of Soldier --purple A Place to Bury Strangers --bright green Blood on the Wall/BOTW --grey Deerhunter there was a lot of other stuff in the hamper, too. This really sucks because the clothing in the hamper was pretty much all the clothes I wear normally/everything I've worn over the last week and a half. FUCK!
