To determine whether you are eligible to join the study, you will be asked to complete a 20 minute telephone screening interview that includes questions about your background and your thoughts and feelings about your illness and transplant. If you are found to be eligible and if you decide to join the study, you will complete study procedures from your home, directed by a study staff member. The study includes two telephone interviews, spaced over about 4 months. One will take about 45 minutes and the other will take about 60 minutes. <![CDATA[<a href="http://www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-canada.htm" rel="nofollow"> Environmental,restoration and social work with first nation kids </a> July 13 - July 26, 2008 July 27 - August 9, 2008 <img border="0" src="http://www.cadip.org/camps/koeye1.jpg"><img border="0" src="http://www.cadip.org/camps/koeye2.jpg"><img border="0" src="http://www.cadip.org/camps/koeye3.jpg"> Located in British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest and overlooking the Pacific, the Koeye (pronounced “kway”) have been for millennia cherished by the Heiltsuk First Nation people for its healing and sustenance and have been a home for 'Qaikas Nan' - the Great Grizzly Bear. Nestled at the mouth of Koeye River is the Koeye Lodge - a non-profit society that is committed to supporting Heiltsuk youth, culture and environment. This summer they are opening a traditional ceremonial Bighouse which is to support the culture and science camps organized for kids and youth as well as their healing programs. International group of volunteers will assist the Heiltsuk First Nation with restoration project and the completion of the traditional ceremonial Bighouse. They will be also involved in some work with the youth culture and science camps, healing courses and non-profit ecotourism which will also be on site. Volunteers will help landscaping the Bighouse area, including bushing, moving sand and rock, stream clean-up, rock fire pit work and building. Among the other planned activities are clearing and building trails, some garden preparation for medicine and demonstration gardens and collecting plants, assisting the set up of obstacle course for team building. Volunteers may also take part in some plant propagation and pruning for trails as part of a 1000-year restoration plan for a small logged area. Around 30 first nation kids at the age of 10-15, some of whom with disabilities, attend the culture and science camps at Koeye Lodge each week. Volunteers will be involved in organizing and attending some activities with those kids. Each Friday night, a feast is held around the big camp fire, filled with traditional songs, dances and ceremonies. Kids present what they’ve learned of their cultural history and the elderly tell stories about the past. The official opening of the Bighouse will be celebrated on July 29. Volunteers in the second project will take part in the preparation and running of the big event, which is expected to host around 500 guests from the area. Koeye River Watershed, 30 miles south of Bella Bella and 70 miles north of Port Hardy. Surrounded by beautiful sandy beaches and rugged coastline with numerous islands, inlets and coves, this magnificent area offers breathtaking scenery and wildlife. <![CDATA[<a href="http://www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-vietnam.htm" rel="nofollow"> Organic gardening project in support of Agent Orange victims <img border="0" src="http://www.cadip.org/camps/friendship5.jpg" align="right"> </a> July 30 - August 12, 2008 September 17 - September 30, 2008 Volunteer project: Vietnam Friendship Village is a treatment/care centre for Agent Orange victims located in Ha Tay Province, which was opened in 1993 to treat children and veterans suffering from the effects of Agent Orange. The children, whose fathers or grandfathers were exposed (causing chromosomal damage) or who were contaminated from their mother’s milk, suffer from a range of difficult conditions. While staying in Vietnam Friendship Village, children and veterans are nourished and are provided with free medical care. The children, who may stay there for several years, receive not only basic education, but also some forms of job training. The Organic Gardening Project was launched in 2004 with the goal of creating islands of a harmonious approach to agriculture within areas of environmental and human devastation - increasing awareness of the consequences of war and, at the same time, demonstrating positive strategies for healing and living. At this moment, the farm is providing about 60% of the village’s consumption of vegetable. It is expected that it will cover all the needs and there will be products left for sale to raise funds for the village. <img border="0" src="http://cadip.org/camps/friendship4.jpg" align="right"> Volunteers will help with clearing the site, preparing soil, weeding, planting vegetables and fruit trees, cleaning a fish pond and redecorating the flowers in the garden. Additional activities may include planting trees, moving bricks for construction, collecting garbage and playing with the children or exchanging with local volunteers or farmers. Discussions among the volunteers about Agent Orange, Vietnamese culture, and other social issues will take place during some of the evenings. The first children moved into SOS Children's Village Viet Tri in 1999. There are now about 168 orphans living in 15 families under the care of the village mothers and staff. The orphans come from 5 different provinces in the north of Vietnam, and are at the ages between 1 and 18. Volunteers will help planting vegetable inside the village, cleaning the area, organizing games and social activities for children, teaching English to the children and encouraging them to learn better. Volunteers will also join the families to get closer to the children’s life and try to build up wider horizon for the children. Location: About 100 km north from Hanoi Capital.
