<![CDATA[Several points in response to the previous posts: 1. Notice that none of the negative posters have actually studied music there. 2. Try asking the students enrolled there what they think of it, especially the ones who are developing music careers because of the great instruction! 3. The school also has a 60 day trial period, so that the student can decide if the school is a good fit for them. 4. The instruments and basic equipment offered for sale are for the convenience of beginnners who have no instrument. Beginners (and their parents) typically do not want to spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to buy a high-end student or professional instrument when they first start out. Of course the more advanced students have better instruments, and receive, if they wish, assistance in finding the right instrument for them. At no time are prospective or current students pressured to purchase an instrument there. 5. They do not discuss pricing on the phone simply because it depends entirely on where the student is already at and what they are wanting to accomplish. Lesson length, number of instruments being studied, and current ability level will all factor in. 6. What have you been quoted for weekly music lessons at other places? Factor in that the student will be getting monthly group lessons in addition to weekly private lessons over a 6 month period. Divide it out and it's not really that much, especially considering the quality of the instructors. 7. Using a seperate company to handle billing is a standard operating procedure for private schools, gyms, martial arts schools and many small businesses. Also, registration fees are common among these types of businesses. 8. Bobby Flores's credentials speak for themselves, as do those of the instructors. Just check the academy's website. 9. Anyone interested in the school may receive a free presentation at the school. During this time, the school shares the opportunities that it has to offer, and the level of each potential student is assessed in order to give them the right teacher and a program that fits their individual needs. The Bulverde Academy of Music is a live performance music academy, with many students who are well on their way to professional careers in many genres - classical, country, Broadway, rock, jazz, etc. It does not claim to be the right school for everyone. <![CDATA[I went to meet with BoB Flores and while back, and while his accomplishments warrant merit. the man is one fast talker. I don't understand why he cant believe in his academy enough to allow paying customers to evaluate his services without committing to a contract. After the "tour" (a total waste of time) he stated that the lessons consisted of once a week for 30mins. a 6 month contract well over $900 and a registration fee, after I asked what the registration fee was for he said and I quote "its so my accountant can tell me how much money people owe me" WHAT??? I am a retired attorney who moved out to the Bulverde and I know a liar when I hear one . Also I played in a country band and it helped me pay for college but I don't have the patience to teach my grand children (16yo and 17yo). In response to to the quality of equipment it was half-ass at best , I have seen far better equipment in poor inner city music schools. I refuse to give this man one moment of my time or one nickel. ]]>

<![CDATA[Basically, aren't they awarded to just about anybody with a Spanish/Portuguese album. No one takes them as seriously as the REAL Grammys. So, Bobby Flores can basically suck one. No one has ever heard of him outside of 1604. You Texas musicians are so full of yourselves!! And does the world REALLY need another country/americana/tejano band? It all sounds alike!]]>

Let me ask you, Mr. Contractor, who do you overcharge to have the disposable income to consider a $900 music course for your kids ? And what do tube amps have to do with music instruction ? Almost all the instructors have music careers of 4 decades in the San Antonio area, and worked for international companies and name acts. If you want quality instruction, it is a good choice, otherwise, you can go to the other facilities that have "real professionals" that play the bars around town. I have worked with Bobby, and know all the instructors at the academy, so I know this is true. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sounds like you need to give your friend a call and tell him to quit acting like a sleazy con salesman, because it's quite OBVIOUS that's how people see him. Maybe he isn't one, but if people think you're an ass...chances are you are an ass. The consensus here seems to think he's a conman. It really does sound like he is. I agree with the one poster regarding his website. If he is such a professional, running a "professional" school, why is he so vague about what it costs to attend the school? Why does he demand a contract? Why do they HAVE to meet with you to answer any questions? According to the website, "Monthly lessons must be paid in advance with a credit card or by automatic bank account debit. This payment will be debited from your bank account or charged to your credit card on the 1st of each month." What the hell? Is he giving music lessons the Bally's Fitness Center way? So if you find out their methods aren't for you, you're screwed because they conned you into signing a contract and have your credit card/bank info! Is it any wonder people who decide to check out the place in person never hear any lessons being taught? Contracts might work for fat people given the promise of a thinner future, but in this case it makes no sense why anyone would be stupid enough to sign one. Especially when we're talking about MUSIC LESSONS. And let's be fair now, the instructors might be qualified but no more qualified or better than any other place offering instruction. This isn't fricking Juilliard we're talking about. It's some start up school struggling to con people into contracts so they can't just back out of when they realize it is no Juilliard. As far as being taught by instructors "that play the bars around town".....honestly now, this is San Antonio. Where the hell else are they supposed to play? If you're telling me that none of the instructors that work for Flores' ripoff school play around town, then they must not be serious musicians or completely content hanging around an empty school with no students. Don't give me the session musicians or orchestra musician crap either. This is SAN ANTONIO remember? Our music scene sucks compared to Austin, and in Austin the BAR scene is THE scene. And the San Antonio Symphony struggles year after year, sometimes unable to pay their musicians if even employ them. These instructors are in the same pool as everyone else. No worse and no better. Anyone paying attention to the country music scene is aware of Bobby Flores' accomplishments, and I feel confident he would have a qualified teaching staff at his "academy". At one point I thought I might be interested in taking some lessons there, and I made an online inquiry, since BAM has a website, and inquiries are invited. There was a brief exchange of email, but no amount of coaxing on my part could elicit answers to my basic questions, such as "how long are typical lessons?", "how much do you charge?", "do I bring my own instrument or do you provide one?"...simple crap like that. Instead, the offer was for me to go there and talk to Bobby Flores, and when I failed to do so, I got several more emails from his henchmen (he couldn't be bothered to deal with me further apparently) imploring me to come and talk. I'm glad now I chose to just blow the whole thing off, because I have a low tolerance for the kind of tactics being described here. Of course, it's clear why I got nowhere with them - if they'd given me the information I wanted, they'd have never heard from me again. My position is, first, if you expect to do business with the public in ANY endeavor, you better be up-front and forthright about your dealings, or you'll fail. Second, if you have a web presence and expect to use it to further your business, you'd better be ready to respond via the website if you invite inquiries there, instead of simply using it to generate a contact list. It isn't unreasonable to expect that, and it's never been an issue for me until my BAM encounter. Savvy internet businesses welcome online requests for information about their products, and usually respond quickly with the reqested information. Not BAM. Based on the other comments here about the "contract" and apparent financial commitment required, BAM's a non-player (pardon the pun) for me, and lack of money's not the reason. First they wont give you any info because they want you to come in and get the sales pitch from conman and Founder Bobby Flores. so bob starts showing you around a little place making all kinds of claims, when it comes down to the price of it all--- he wants you to sign a 6 month contract for about $900, this contract or "note" gets sold to a third party that will bug the shit out of you if you decide that the school is not for you. I'm a contractor and can afford this but for the price you think there would be high-end instruments and amps available but there's not(not 1 tube amp), I went in on a weekday around 6pm and did not see or hear one single student playing. Bob points out an area where he sells instruments, once again more low grade instruments. even bobs guitar is at best a good guitar for a 15yo. now to be fair bob has real credentials as a musician but the Bulverde Academy of Music is a first rate second rate dump. I found an ad for AMH Studios on here about two months ago - back then we were just thinking of recording (what band isn't on tight budget?) anyway after a show on July 4th - things kinda got kicked into high gear with a radio station requesting a song of ours they heard at the 4th of July event. I called the studio again and told him our dilemma. He accomodated us and gave us his next available slot. Now I know that some of us fear home studios (just ask our drummer who is used to recording in Austin with asleep at the wheel) But - this fella was first class all the way. And what he promises, he delivers. We couldn't be happier with what the end result was!! We sent our songs to the local station and to the XM station that requested them and we hope to hear them soon. I am not the owner of the Studio I didn't even know the fella till we went in to record. <![CDATA[I was the winner of the first guitar wars, 1st place Apr.11,1989. And was invited to judge guitar wars about 4 years ago. Yes, I did notice it had evolved into a speed contest, and agree with your conclusion. But, deal is, everybody gets to do what they want. Maybe the exercises of the contestants evolves into something else. I heard, at the one I judged, a lack of key center, and an emphasis on speed and technique. But thats ok. In 1989, I used my 2 minutes to play a variety of styles I arranged into exactly 1:58 minutes. I went back the second year and played, the late Jack Skiles competed, and in my eyes was the winner, hands down. But neither of us won or placed. From the contest, I got a clinician/product specialist job with Kaman corp. ( C.Bruno and sons, by Freeman colliseum), and later worked for them as quality control/order filler. Initially, guitar wars was a nationwide marketing tool. I don't know how many of the initial guitar wars are left. When you step away from the computer you forget each one of them. The majority of these guys probably arent in bands. I wonder how many average music listners even really like guitar solos? Somehow (it must have occurred in the 1980s) great guitar playing is more often associated with having the fastest sounding noisy toy. Its sad to think of that lone dude sitting in his room, practicing his lead chops over and over again. I lived this way for a while. It seems to me like all the relevant musicians in history are remembered because they understood concepts as phrasing, melody, tone, etc. ]]>
