<![CDATA[It is not illegal to get a turtle under 4 inches in length. If that was the case then the very legit reptile stores in SD would not be doing it! I GUESS I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE SPECIFIC AND SAID RED EARRED SLIDERS! Yes you can get Salmonella from a turtle thats is why they have signs up all around the pet store to watch your kids! dont let them touch animals withou your supervision! they also state that turtle carry it and to wash your hands. Turtles are not the only animal to carry diseases or that can cause harm to your child. A dog bite is just as dangerous and just as painful for a little kid to go through. Even alot of frogs are "poisonous" but are sold in store they are ONLY poisonous if you touch them then stick your fingers in your mouth, nose, eyes etc... MY POST WAS IN RESPONSE TO ANOTHER ONE WHERE THE PERSON POSTING SAID THERE IS NO SALMONELLA RISKS INVOLVING TURTLES, BUT THERE WAS ONE 10 YEARS AGO IN FLORIDA, AND THE KIDS INVOLVED GAVE THE TURTLE GERMS! MY POST WAS FLAGGED AND DELETED! IF YOU WISH TO TAKE OFFENSE AT IT, WOW! EXCUSE ME! I AM TOTALLY AWARE OF DOG BITS, CAT BITES, AND ALL SORTS OF OF DANGERS INVOLVED WITH KIDS AND ANIMALS. We're still on a mission...to help Buddy recover from some pretty devastating health issues due to his abandonment and subsequent infection (paw that was badly eaten away from this infection). When he came to live with us, he was a skeleton; malnourished, dehydrated, and scared to death. Now, however, he's making his way back to wellness. His paw looks better every day. He's gained 10 lbs (in 2 weeks!) and his spirit is beginning to shine. What we're asking for is some help with this enormous Vet bill. He had to have a toe removed (infection was too severe to save it) and lots of meds to kick that infection. While our Vet is a wonderfully generous man, we still have a ways to go to pay him the money we owe for these procedures. We're not asking you send US the money, you can send it to the Doc. <![CDATA[ There are some perfectly respectable dog rescue organizations out there, but unfortunately not all of them are what they seem. The newest scam is for supposed rescuers to search shelters, CL, penny saver, etc. to locate dogs which are in high demand and easy to sell. Then they obtain them and then sell them, using the term “Rehomeing” fee for a serious profit. They will tell you that included in your fee is spay/neutering , shots ect., while all along the animals had received these services from where ever the ‘rescuer’ got the dog. They will also tell you that they have to recover the costs of rescuing the dog and care for the dog, but if they are charging for caring for the dog it makes them a dog kennel and they have strict rules and regulations that they probably do not meet. Some of these people con the shelters into waving or reducing fees. Shelter fees are usually between $60-$100 for a dog, if it’s a Chihuahua or Minpin or small terrier they will charge $300-$500 “rehoming” fee. These dogs are all very adoptable and would have found homes in the shelters most times. It’s the pit bulls and larger older dogs that are hard to place. So, in the end, these people, under the guise of being a friend to animals make a $200-$400 profit. Do that a couple times a week and you can give up your day job. Be careful of these people. Ask detailed questions, ask about their non-profit status, ask details about the animal and it’s origin and check it out. Non profits are not allowed to charge fees, they may ask for voluntary donations. As for a discount, if they person is in it for the money you can often tell by the tone of their voice when you ask for a discount. If they say they have laid out money to save the dog and want to recover that money ask for receipts and proof before you give them money. There is another class of rescuers who are equally harmful to animals, they are the ones who ask invasive questions or demand inappropriate access to your life in order to adopt the animal. We all heard about one of this type during the unfortunate Ellen incident a while back. If you pay for a dog it’s yours, irregardless of what they say or make you sign. Target can’t come take back that TV you bought last year if they don’t approve of the way you use it and the simple truth is that same principal applies to dogs. Target also has no say about that TV if you decide to give it away later on. I think selling dogs should be prohibited, even if it’s called rehoming fee or not. There are thousands of dogs who need homes and charging for dogs just makes it all the worse. If you pay $300 for a dog, it should be a purebred with AKC papers and a pedigree. So don’t get scammed. So, don’t make it easy for them. Any fee should be suspect, but fees over $75 should be seriously scrutinized. If it doesn’t smell right, do something, turn them in, call a legitimate animal protection agency for advice, take some action to stop these predators. ]]>

<![CDATA[Meet this cute dog Neva lovingly nicknamed Chubbs. She was recently rescued from the Bonita shelter. Neva was one the shelter workers' favorites because of her great personality. Neva is a Jack Russell/Corgi mix, appx 6 years old, who wasn't very well taken care of before she ended up at the shelter. When she first arrived she was 10 pounds overweight, her toenails weren't clipped and she could barely walk. This girl has had a bad start but fortunately she is now living with a foster, eating a healthy/conservative diet, and getting walked daily so she can shed some of that excess weight and in no time will be a much leaner dog. For all she has been through so far, she is a happy girl. She attended a 2 year olds birthday party recently. Chubbs was ok with all the noise, people, and was very patient with the kids. She is sweet and submissive. She like to give kisses and is gentle with small children. She doesn't mind cats at all. She is house trained and gets along with other dogs. She can be a little alpha around other dogs so we are working on her socialization skills but she is a quick learner. Chubbs is up to date on her shots, is spayed and is ready for her forever home. But now they say I'm getting on in years (I'm only about 9) and it's about time I found a "real" home to keep someone company and just hang out. I recently had two surgeries to correct a problem with one of my eyes, but they say I'm "good to go" now. They also say I'm a real good dog, because I get along well with all the others. I don't like cats though. No cats for me, please. No siree. I'm really shy, too, at first, but I'll warm up to you in no time at all. They can expect a $3500 bill and perhaps more in the wake. I am not a dog owner, to those of you out there who are, is there some sort of charity organization who benefits dogs and offers financial help sent to the vet for assistance? I know my neighbors will pay what ever it takes, however I also know that with pay cuts and this, added cost they are in a big financial squeeze.]]>

Yes you can get Salmonella from a turtle thats is why they have signs up all around the pet store to watch your kids! dont let them touch animals withou your supervision! they also state that turtle carry it and to wash your hands. Turtles are not the only animal to carry diseases or that can cause harm to your child. A dog bite is just as dangerous and just as painful for a little kid to go through. Even alot of frogs are "poisonous" but are sold in store they are ONLY poisonous if you touch them then stick your fingers in your mouth, nose, eyes etc... Its funny that everytime i post an ad for a tortoise or turtle a Salmonella ad appears. It comes down to 1 thing dont be irresponsible and get your CHILD pets they shouldnt have. When he turned 4 this year he got hyper and would run at the larger pony, and when the pony would get frustrated she would run interference and keep the larger pony away from my son.....it was really cool to see. She just loves kids, when we have friends over (a 5 and a 6 year old) she runs the same interference. She was also a big hit at the lakeside rodeo during the fires, all of the workers fell in love with her. Arnold is a wonderful dog for anyone looking for a companion for themselves or their current pet. Arnold is playful but not a nipper like some chihuahuas. He's not a barker either. He is well mannered, cuddly, and a such catch! He has such a fun personality and he gets along great with other pets as well- we have two bunnies! <![CDATA[I have a 14 year old Calico cat that I have had since she was just under a year old. We are getting ready to move and I can't take her with me. Aside from her age, she has arthritis and a tendency to vomit after she eats. The vets have all told me it is from hairballs. She is declawed and has always been an indoor cat. I have called several animal rescue centers but they won't take her because of her age...she is considered "non-adoptable." I am devestated that I can't keep her and I want to make sure she has someone to love her. She is best suited as an only cat (although she currently lives with another younger cat)and would be better suited with an adult, no kids. I am desperate to find a loving home for her because our only other option will be to euthanize her. I just don't feel like she is old enough or sick enough to do that!
