<![CDATA[Are You Taking Care or Caretaking? Though composed of the same two words, taking care and caretaking are vastly different in practice. Taking care is healthy caregiving--whether for children, spouses, friends, or parents--that includes drawing appropriate boundaries, taking your own needs into consideration and knowing when to say no. Caretaking, on the other hand, is about rescuing constantly placing others' needs before your own and taking inappropriate responsibity for others emotions and actions. The difference is in the intention: Are you in service (taking care) or is there a payoff (caretaking)? Payoffs are usually subtle. Caretaking may help you relieve guilt, feel better about yourself, calm your anxiety in the short term, or get attention or validation. But there is a cost to caretaking, as well: Caretaking can result in resentments, emotional and physical depletion, and/or feeling disconnected from your inner self. Complete this questionnaire by answering true or false to discover how much caretaking you do. 1. I feel safer when giving rather than receiving. 2. I am "on call" to friends with problems at any hour of the day or night. 3. I'm great at being nurturing and compassionate with others, but not so great at giving it to myself. 4. I feel responsible for others' thoughts, feelings, behaviors, problems, choices, well-being, health and destiny. 5. It's more important to me to please other people than to please myself. 6. I hate to see others feeling sad or angry or jealous; I try to fix the situation so that they don't feel bad any more. 7. I give and give and give, and no one ever notices or gives anything back. 10. I feel controlled by the needs of others, yet my needs are never met. 11. I often give unsolicited advice. I really want to help others see the light. 12. I give away my energy to others in order to be loved and accepted. 13. I grow resentful when others are not willing to "give" like I do. 14. I see other people as the source of my problems. 15. I don't really know what I need and want--but I always know what other people need, want, and should do. 16. I don't wait to be asked--if I see that someone needs me, I just jump right in and help. 17. I'm often exhausted from taking care of everyone around me. 18. I've always been the Giver in my relationships. It can be hard to differentiate between helping that truly helps and helping that actually harms. This can be called the "shaping at the point of utterance." The same principle applies to life in general and to therapy, in particular. In talking with a therapist who is a neutral presence, a person can explore his/her difficulties and concerns in a safe, healing environment. In fact, airing your thinking aloud with a professional, detached, focused, and yet, compassionate second ear helps you to get clearer about your emotions, rethink chronic problems and anxieties, and live in a more aware state. The next time you find yourself (choose one of the following, or substitute your own problem here) depressed, anxious, creatively blocked, in conflict with your mate, struggling with your interpersonal relations, or engaging in an unhealthy behavior like reaching for a drink, or some fattening food, you may be better able to understand why you are driven to do so, and make conscious some connections that were previously unconscious. What just happened to trigger the feeling or the injurious behavior? Why did it occur then? Does it always have to happen like that? What can you do to prevent it from repeating itself again and again? <![CDATA[I was catching up on some of my reading tonight and finally got to The Kiplinger Letter. You know, if you have read The Kiplinger Letter, that they are short, sweet and to the point, and usually pretty accurate. I love their approach. Anyways, the Wednesday, April 18, 2008 letter starts right off with: "Dear Client: Amid the housing doom and gloom...rising foreclosures, plunging housing starts, scores of unsold homes and falling prices...It's hard to even imagine a recovery. But still obscured in the ashes...Seeds of rebirth are germinating." I could not have said it any better, and it reiterates what I have been saying all month. We have started turning the corner! January/February was the bottom of the market in terms of volume/activity. We will begin the slow crawl out of the hole that we fell into. Now, don't get me wrong. This does not mean that we are home free. We have not seen the bottom in terms of price. We have only seen the bottom in terms of volume. Buyers are beginning to venture out IF the property is priced right. They see and smell opportunity. And, sellers are beginning to realize that if they want to sell they must come back to reality and price the property accordingly. I think we still have 9 to 12 months to go before we see the bottom of the market in terms of price. The Kiplinger Letter put it very nicely: "Home builders aren't finished with additional markdowns...up to $100,000 on homes once priced at $300,000, for example. And, they're sealing deals by adding flat panel TVs and other amenities. But more and more buyers won't wait much longer to try and catch the absolute bottom price. With mortgage rates at low levels...under 6% for a 30-year fixed...qualified buyers are pulling the trigger." Kiplinger's comments reflects what we are beginning to see around the country in a number of markets.
