Our last three meetings have focused on the question of self: its soul, its will and how it should live. A conception of self, however, begs a larger question: What constitutes the self? Is it a thing or is it a process; or both? Is it memories, genetic inheritance and/or the influence of fellow selves? In any case, the self is not an autonomous agent unaffected by the world it seeks to mold. The self is of its world and the world is then molded by groups of selves striving for their collective ends. In turn, that world molds the singular self.Due to its location on Memorial Day, we thought it would be good to recap a recurring thread that has pervaded our recent meetings and we are sure to see again. This thread, the nature of self and its relation to its world, underlies the most fundamental question of philosophy: the nature of being. For, without being, all other questions are rendered mute.20th century philosophy recognizes the self as a nexus of narratives. In order to further understand these inherited stories that constitute our sense of self, modern philosophers have put these stories under the microscope; their histories, power dynamics and preconceptions. These stories about stories are meta-narratives. Jacques Derrida has questioned these coveted stories thus deconstructing our faith in biography; our desire to see the self as a fixed story that we can definitively know in its entirety. So, if I can't completely know myself, then who does? Other selves, perhaps; my friends, family, community, nation and species. Without this evolved culture would I even be a homo sapien? Does the boundary of my-self end at my skin or does my-self extend into culture to then constitute other selves? These are important questions since ethics of law and war are predicated on the tacit assumption that at some point the group is within its right to mold the freedom of the one. So, where does the one end and the many begin? At what point do I relinquish the telling of my story to the group? At what point is it prudent for the one to derail the story being told by the many? Please review the wiki on Jacques Derrida to get us started. We look forward to meeting you and hearing your thoughts. We will meet at 7pm, settle in, meet and greet, and kick off the topic at 7:30pm.David and Josh

See the full event details, including location, at http://philosophy.meetup.com/184/calendar/7832931/.

Check out what members are saying about The San Francisco Philosophy Meetup Group:

"No two meetings are alike, each has its own distinct character."

- David

"Good group of people, also very sincere I think in their desire to communicate - which is not necessarily a given." - Susan S

"I feel that the group has a lot of potential, I but it will take a bit longer for me to come to any real conclusions." - Nathaniel

"Because we're all hungry for real conversation, about real ideas." - Jessica

| We're a growing group hoping to meet new people and learn from each other.

Would you like to become part of a group of like minded individuals who discuss and explore effective ways of how to create positive change in life?

If you answer yes then I would like to invite you to our newly emerging learning and healing community for and by truth seekers (and speakers), teachers and students, artists, visionaries, co-creators and healers from different walks of life, belief systems and age groups who come together to learn from and with one another, work together, explore, relate and share personal learning experiences and philosophies and create a wonderful experience through creative activities, awareness exercises and inter-active dialogue during which we will explore:

* topics ranging from personal improvement, interpersonal relationships, conflict resolution, self esteem, anger and impulse control to human development, community building, inter-personal communication, mythology, the supernatural, philosophy, spirituality, psychology, the essence of healing, exercise, health, motivation, inspiration, empowerment and enlightenment,

* the nature of learning, how and what we learn through experience,

* personal philosophies and belief systems and how they have developed,

* the fundamental laws (as well as the meaning..) of life, among them law of creation, the law of evolution, the law of attraction, the law of karma and the law of synchronicity,

* how to practically apply the knowledge we gain into how we deal with and live life.

What I would like to do is create a community space, an outlet where people can express themselves, inter-act and network with other like minded individuals, ask questions and find answers to their unique problems and challenges. To help in this process I would like to come up with a schedule for weekly seminars, workshops, group exercises and study meetings along the lines of personal and human development.

As an emerging community our success is based upon your collaboration, synergy, corporation and contributions. Participation is completely free of charge, but I would appreciate a small non-mandatory dontation based upon what you can afford and what you take away from the experience. I would also like to encourage you to bring something to eat and/- or drink to be shared with others in our group.

Meetings take place in the Russian Hill are of San Francisco every Sunday between 4 pm - 8 pm (or later), or at a time which is convenient for you. Our group will consist of anywhere between 4-10 people, not to exceed 15. I am also available for a one-on-one meeting either over the phone or in person to discuss this opportunity further.

In addition to this physical experience I would also like to introduce you to the experience of virtual and global community building on www.paltalk.com . This voice and web cam enabled chat community provides the opportunity for anybody who is a member to either create their own room, or join an existing room under various categories such as Friends and Family, Sports, Politics, Social Issues, Spirituality, Languages and Distant Learning. Since paltalk is open to people around the world you can find any time of the day between 40.000 – 60.000 people gathered together in several thousand different room.

To provide an outlet for spiritually minded individuals to express themselves, listen to the philosophies, beliefs and view points of others and become inspired, motivated, empowered, enlightened and organized to create positive change in life I created 'A room for conscious rEvolution’ in December of 2005 , located under the category 'Religion & Spirituality' and 'Metaphysical': http://chat.paltalk.com/g2/group/920052976

This room combines an inter-active radio program, knowledge exchange, speak easy and school for experiental learning and attitudinal development. We are open every day, usually during the early to late evening hours on weekdays, and various hours of the weekend, but my intention is to create a 24/7 online meeting room.

To participate all you need is a computer with speakers so you can follow the conversation in the room, and a microphone (but not necessary) if you would like to express your thoughts and ideas verbally. The capacity of the room is 200, so make sure to tell all your friends, co-workers, family members and loved-ones about this amazing experience in virtual and global community building.

As time goes on I would like to broadcast our physical meetings live via this online meeting room, and eventually I would also like to record our sessions so I can make the audio, and possibly video of our meeting available to you so you can review it at a later point.
Thank you for your time I am looking forward to be speaking to you soon.

When people asked the Buddha why and what he taught, he replied "I teach because
you and all beings seek happiness and try to avoid suffering. I teach the way things are."

So what is Buddhism? Buddha used the best description himself. During the 1,500 years
the teachings existed in India, they were called Dharma, and for the last 1000 years in Tibet
the name was Cho. Both mean "the way things are". Understanding the way things are is
the key to every happiness.

The Diamond Way Buddhist Center San Francisco is one of a worldwide network of
Buddhist Centers founded by Lama Ole Nydahl according to the wishes of the late 16th
Gyalwa Karmapa. They are now under the spiritual guidance of the 17th Gyalwa
Karmapa Trinlay Thaye Dorje, spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu Lineage, which is one
of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. This lineage transmits the teachings of
Diamond Way (Vajrayana) Buddhism. The Diamond Way is the crown jewel of the
Buddha's teachings; it employs methods of total identification with enlightenment for
quickest results. The teachings are presented in a relaxed, contemporary style that makes
them readily accessible to Westerners who want to know the nature of their mind.

Introduction to Buddhism – One Hour - 1st Saturday of each month - 2 pm

Whether you are interested in learning more about Buddhism or already know that you

want to meditate but aren’t sure how to start, this is the best way to get an idea of
what Buddhism is all about. There is always plenty of time for questions and answers.
Every Monday and Wednesday at 8 PM:

Guru Yoga Meditation on the 16th Karmapa. His name means “man of action”. We
meditate on him not as a human being but as an expression of space and our own
inherent Buddha nature. He gave this meditation especially for meditators in the West,
and it is the core meditation practiced at Diamond Way Buddhist Center.

Your child is your teacher and your mirror. He or she is showing you exactly what you need to look for within yourself. When you embrace and welcome this mirror, you begin to heal yourself and relate to your child in present time - but if you resist, you often get stuck in judgment, guilt, and frustration. In this lecture you will learn how to communicate with your child's higher self, see what their spirit needs and learn how to support them to become fully who they really are.

13.I accept that I have the right to be who I want to be and live the way I want to live.
14.I am able to grieve my childhood and mourn the loss of those who failed me.
STAGE THREE: HEALING

| Are you concerned about the state of our world, the environment, education, politics and education?

* personal philosophies, belief systems and learning experiences,

* the fundamental laws (as well as the meaning..) of life, among them law of creation, the law of evolution, the law of attraction, the law of karma and the law of synchronicity,

* how to practically apply the knowledge, wisdom and insight we gain into how we live life.

In addition to this be-coming a community space, an outlet where people can express themselves, inter-act and network with other like minded individuals I would like to come up with a schedule for weekly seminars, workshops, group exercises and study meetings along the lines of personal and human development.

As an emerging community our success is based upon your collaboration, synergy, corporation and contributions. Participation is completely free of charge, but a small non-mandatory dontation based upon what you can afford and what you take away from the experience is highly appreciated. To create a more enjoyable experience for everyone please feel free to bring something to eat and drink to be shared with others in our group.

Meetings take place every Sunday at 4 pm in a very beautiful garden studio located in the Russian Hill area of San Francisco. Our group will consist of anywhere between 4- 10 people, not to exceed 15.

We are open during the early to late evening hours on weekdays, and various hours of the weekend, but my intention is to create a 24/7 online meeting room.

I would also love to meet with you either on the phone or in person to discuss this opportunity further and to explore if you are a good fit for what we are trying to create.

Thank you for your time I am looking forward to be speaking to you soon.

All equipment and food is portaged via canoe to an isolated setting on the lake. Scouts cook their own meals, learn about woodcraft and have fun hiking, swimming and patrol activities.

St. John's Presbyterian Church has sponsored Troop 6 since its founding in 1929. The church provides a safe place to hold meetings and to store the troop's canoes and equipment. Troop 6 welcomes all boys, regardless of where they live or their family or personal situation.
