August 17th - Crissy Field

Come join the American Cancer Society's San Francisco Marina Relay for Life on August 16-17, 2008. Relay For Life is about celebration, remembrance, and hope. We are honoring cancer survivors, paying tribute to the lives we've lost to the disease, and raising money to help fight it. Relay for Life is a 24-hour fundraiser where team members participate in a walk around the clock to raise money for, and show solidarity with, people affected by cancer (all of us). The SF Marina Relay is unique because it is the only event in which the city of San Francisco allows overnight camping on Crissy Field, which has one of the most beautiful views in the entire world.

If you are interested in creating or joining a team, please use the link below. California Reentry Program

Volunteer at San Quentin State Prison (must be 21 or older)

The California Reentry Program at San Quentin State Prison needs dedicated volunteers!

The California Reentry Program at San Quentin State Prison is an independent advising program that seeks to cover a wide array of future-parolees’ needs. Our services include academic advising, referrals to housing resources, job advice/placement, child-support issues, support groups, etc. We provide one-on-one counseling with inmates who are paroling within the next few weeks, months and years. They come to us with questions about their future in regards to education, housing requests, etc. and it's our job to assess their current needs, experience and interests, and support them in establishing a plan to achieve their goals once paroled. Volunteers are needed to go to San Quentin for about three hours once a week. This time is used to meet new clients and assess their needs and to give returning clients information from the previous week or take their new requests. Typically, we'll see 30-40 prisoners per evening, two evenings per week. Many of the men want to know how to get their GEDs, some want an Associate of Arts degree, others have questions about what it might take to open a hot dog stand or start a new career. We also help fill out college/financial aid applications.

We are looking for highly reliable people to assist as Pre-release Advisors, who come in once a week (Tuesday or Thursday evening), meet with the prisoners, and research their requests. Excellent experience for aspiring social workers, educators, counselors, and law students. Fun, challenging, and truly inspirational. We are looking for at least a 6-month commitment but prefer a 1-year commitment. Time commitment per week: approximately 3 hours on site, plus 1-3 hours of research.

In order to volunteer inside the prison, you will be required to attend a two-hour orientation/ training and submit data for a background check. The orientation will cover prison rules and regulations and give an overview of the program and programming in prisons in general. Our next orientation will be in San Francisco on Wednesday May 21 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Please contact us for more details.

San Francisco Court Appointed Special Advocate (SF CASA) Volunteers work one on one with a child in foster care.
Please consider joining us at a 45-minute information session and find out how you can make a difference in the life of a child in foster care in just 2-4 hours a week. The info session includes a discussion of: the roles and responsibilities of a CASA volunteer, the application process, the training requirements and provides an opportunity to address any questions you may have.
There are two information sessions on Thursday, May 28, 2008. The 12:00-12:45pm session will be held at Starbucks: 455 Market St @ 1st. The 6:00-6:45pm session will be held at SFCASA Office: 100 Bush St. @ Battery, Ste 625. These locations are very accessible to the Montgomery BART/MUNI station.
Attending a 45 minute information session is the first step in the application process. Applications, additional info session dates and the current training schedule are available at http://www.sfcasa.org/training.htm.
The foster care system is incredibly overwhelmed. Even with the best of intentions, social workers simply can't spend enough time on each case - with each child - to really know what they want - what they need. This is where a CASA Volunteer steps in…
After successfully completing the SFCASA Training Program, being sworn in as an Officer of the Court and being assigned one child’s case, a CASA volunteer spends time once a week with the child; gets to know them; finds out what they need and want; and makes sure that their voice is heard both in and outside of the court room. Having a CASA on a case ensures that child does not fall through the cracks in the system.
CASA volunteers are required to complete a 40-hour training and once assigned to a case, commit to serving as a CASA 2-4 hours per week for 18 months. CASA's involvement impacts the child for a lifetime and for generations to come. Children with a CASA benefit in countless ways. They are more likely to be placed in a safe, permanent home; more likely to receive better services; and more likely to have fewer placement changes.
In 2007 over 100 new CASA volunteers completed their training and were sworn in as Officers of the Court. Currently there are over 1700 children in the foster care system in San Francisco. Currently, about 15% of these children have been appointed a CASA.
We are asking for your help in assuring that sure every child in foster care is given the voice they deserve. We offer 4 training cycles per year.
