We are in the middle of our placement season for exchange students who arrive in August 2008 and need as much help as we can get to find homes for them. After celebrating our sixtieth year in international education as a non-profit organization, the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) remains highly committed to our mission: “To help people gain understanding, acquire knowledge and develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world.”
We require a “C+” average to be accepted and we also require our students maintain this minimum grade average throughout their stay (allowing for a short adjustment period). Students have taken an English proficiency test to prove their ability to be academically successful while attending an American high school.
CIEE strongly believes that by volunteering their time to community service, our students will become more involved in the American way of life. Therefore, we require that they participate in a “Community Service Project” (8 hours per semester) to ensure that they reciprocate the exchange and benefits to their host family, school, and their community.
Students are between 15-18 years old, have their own medical insurance, and spending money. But Goa is also known to be a high-risk zone for HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases due to a high rate of sexual tourism. To tackle the problem of the rapid spread of these diseases, awareness program has been conducted all throughout the state for several years with a local group of specialists. This year again several volunteer workcamps will be conducted. In the first week of the camp, the volunteers will be given a training on the topics HIV/AIDS, STDs, and counseling. Using the information that was given in the training, they will visit local schools and conduct lectures. Furthermore to reach out to the general public, the group of volunteers will create a Street Theatre Play that will be performed in public places. I will be helping out at a shelter called Remar, which is home to about 25 abused and abandoned children. I have set up a fundraising webpage to help raise money for my trip. Donations made will go directly to United Planet and are tax-deductible. There is alot more information about me and my volunteer program on my page as well.

I am also bringing a medium-sized suitcase of goodies for the kids (my carry-on bag). If you have any of the following that you would like to get rid of, I would be more than happy to pick them up:

school supplies (pencils, crayons, composition notebooks, etc)
shoelaces
small toys (yo-yo's, Matchbox cars, puzzles, stickers, etc)
hair accessories for the girls

So far I have some bilingual children’s books, a small puzzle, 5 t-shirts and about 20 Beanie Babies so any small items would be greatly appreciated! Shanti Recovery Volunteers are experienced in providing support to people affected by alcohol and substance abuse issues.

Our service is aimed at easing the burdens and improving the well-being of people who are living with the challenges of staying sober. We also support their partners, spouses, and family members. Each Shanti relationship is unique and depends on the needs of the client. The carefully-matched pair usually spends a few hours each week together.

Loneliness, anxiety, depression, and fear can be overwhelming. By providing supportive listening and companionship, our volunteers help empower clients to identify and meet their own needs. Our one-to-one support is free, confidential, and always non-judgmental.

What is a recovery CareTeam?
A Recovery CareTeam is a group of four to seven compassionate individuals who provide practical, emotional, and spiritual support to a person working through recovery issues. Volunteers come to us as individuals or may be based out of spiritual communities, recovery communities, universities or civic groups.

Recovery CareTeams are matched with people working through addiction issues, referred to as CarePartners. CareTeams build supportive relationships with CarePartners by listening, offering encouragement, and establishing meaningful personal connections. CareTeam activities are directed by the needs and interests of the CarePartner and skills of the volunteers. Support may include: transportation to appointments, phone calls, birthday parties, help with moving, and shared meals.
We are a group of mostly writers (screen writers, novelists, essayists, short story writers, memoirists) who gather twice a month (1st and 3rd Wednesday evenings) at the Twin Rivers prison in Monroe, WA to discuss Joseph Campbell's The Hero's Journey with inmates who are interested in telling their stories using the HJ as a format. We discuss topics like what makes a hero whether in or out of prison, how to deal with the shapeshifters in our lives, and how to overcome the victim archetype that is at work in all of us. Plus many more.

At the present time we are a discussion group, but we will soon branch out with an emphasis on literary pursuits that incorporate aspects of the Hero's Journey.

Right now we have seven volunteers and a group of about eight inmates. We could use about three more volunteers. If you're looking for a life-changing experience, email me. I've been volunteering at the Washington State Reformatory for 12 years now, and other than raising five kids as a single parent, it has been the single most lifechanging thing I've ever done. If you're a writer, you'll receive feedback on your own writing as well as be given the opportunity to provide feedback on others' work. If you're just someone wanting to know more about how to incorporate the hero archetype rather than the victim archetype into your life, we'd love to have you join us. Have a great day!
