How we work it out

The Bureau of Economic Analysis measures how expensive each metro area is compared with the US average, counting housing, goods, utilities and services (Regional Price Parities, 2024). We divide your salary by the destination's price level and multiply by your current city's, so the figure shows what your pay would buy there, in your current city's money.

It assumes the same salary. In practice, pay also differs between cities, and taxes differ between states, so check the salary calculator and each city's tax figures before you decide.
